misscam: (Words words words)
Reasons why it's a bad idea to google yourself, #19 - coming across posts talking about shipping youin a RPF way (sorta) and feeling all weird. Can only blame myself though - curiosity is sometimes an impulse best resisted.

What's the weirdest you've found googling yourself?

In other fandom news, been a bit of a bruhaha in Doctor Who fandom over whether or not 'retarded' is okay to use in a fic title. Arguments over the original meaning of the word and all that, plus the author feeling specifically targetted (which does seem to allude to previous incidents).

Titles. Pick 'em carefully. (But man, titles are evil to find. I think the longest I've used to find one was six hours, which was longer than it took to write the fic!)

I am steadily writing more Merlin fic, as I've been infected by new fandom quite bad. It's always a bit strange to see what I actually really fall for, fandomwise. And what I like, but never get fannish about (which is the majority of stuff I watch or read, really). And because I am in a math mood, I started wondering if I could make a formula for my fandom attractions.

The closest I came was: Cute couple with potential for being Canon + interesting but flawed canon - annoyance over certain issues multiplied by desire to write fanfic for said fandom divided by fandom wankery.

... I need not to be making math tests right after I've written fanfic, probably.

Arthur/Gwen fanvid behind the cut )

Meanwhile, a bit of scandal has hit Norway - and it involves the US. Basically, it has been uncovered that the US were spying on Norwegians in Norway, using former police officers. This sort of surveillance could very well be illegal. The US claims it was cleared with Norwegian authorities, Norwegian authorities says no. The US has stopped the surveillance for now.

Yeeeaah. If the US has actually broken Norwegian law, I'm gonna be severely unimpressed. And yet, not really surprised because the US government has said sod it to International law in the past.

Don't forget to leave your address here if you want a Christmas card from Norway or is doing a gift exchange with me.

I generally think fandom supporting each other and such is a good thing. I do.

But asking people to support getting a grant for a fanfiction hosting site rather than charity? Not on. Not on at all.

Here are some of the other suggestions competing for the 25,000 USD grant Fiction Alley wants: (as listed on the Pepsi website. Highlight 25,000 and then click on load more as many times as you want to see more suggestions)

- Improve our inner-city school's ability to help at-rsik teens.
- Supply a bed for every head in Spokane, WA for homeless people.
- Refurbish computers for children in foster care living in Buffalo.
- Provide care packages for children born with the birth defect CDH.
- Revive a shelter: Give comfort and safety when a home isn't safe.
- Give low income kids in rural Minnesota a SMART start in preschool.
- Prevent homeless kittens in Cincannati through project Kitty Litter.
- Open a pet pantry to feed dogs and cats of families in need.
- Help rebuild underserved and devatstaed communities and inspire hope.
- Provide financial assistance to families affected by CDH.
- Provide basic school supplies for low income children in Hawaii.
- Rescue and adoption centre for cats that doesn't kill the pets or keep them in cages.
- A summer program for abused children.
- rescue and care of injured and orphaned wildlife.
- Use new technology to improve learning in special needs classrooms.
- Provide free therapy to families who have experienced sexual abuse.
- Create a Life Saving Prison Dog Partnership (Don't Throw Us Away)

... and many more in that vein.

And seriously, all of these are more important than a website hosting fanfiction. Yes, the economy sucks for many and my symapathies for increased costs. It sucks, I understand that part. But fanfiction is not a need. It is entertainment. Does it really deserve 25,000 USD over any of those suggsted causes I listed? I say no. I heartily disagree with the FA's representative's claim that Our 501(c)3 is just as deserving as any other. I disagree a lot. And yes, there are more sources of founding available to these sort of causes - because they are far more important causes, FFS. (And originally the post said I've done the research and I'm here to tell you that there are far more sources of funding available to starving children in Africa than there are to fan-oriented websites. Charming, FA! Real charming.) And yet there is still never enough for them, because the world has many worthy causes and a limited attention span.

This is pissing me off, I have to say. I have no relationship with FictionAlley since I've never really been in Harry Potter fandom, but this is souring me on them something fierce.

FA has responded to some concerns raised. Also, it's been picked up Unfunny Business.

Just... WHAT. WHAT THE EFF.
misscam: (Shut up please)
So, a Big Bang fic is posted in bandom, wherein one of the characters is made transfemale. (As I understand, I have not read the story.)

[profile] sinuous_curve points out to her flist she finds the story to contain "transfail, misogyny, and paternalism".

The author pokes her head in, at first enganging and claiming to be ready to listen, and stating that the issues the OP had with the fic were more or less intended as meta commentary.

Then the author goes and does this post, which contains language that could be triggering about sexual assault/physical assault. I'll be discussing this under the cut, as well as what rape is and isn't.

Possibly triggering language behind this cut, and what rape is and isn't )

Look author, you're clearly feeling hurt. I get it. I also get that the OP felt hurt by your story, and posted about that in public. Others commented to agree or disagree or talk about issues concerning transphobia. You attempted to defend your story, and several people raised issues with your defence. None of this is anything like rape or a lynch mob. Those words have power. Using them against people who are criticizing your story is attempting to empower your argument, to make the other side the villains. To make your hurt surpass theirs. (Maybe you don't see theirs and thus don't want to acknowledge it. This is not uncommon - it is hard to see beyond own one's perspective. But that doesn't mean you should not try.) Words do have power, but just because you can use a word, doesn't mean you're not automatically entitled to the power it can contain. You need to use it right for that, and that's why writing is a craft.

A long story written over a period of time has had a lot of effort poured into it. To face it getting critisized can feel like getting kicked in the belly. I get that, I write myself. I've felt that moment of defensive "how dare they point out flaws in my darling story!". But effort does not mean immunity from criticism. Intent does not mean immunity from criticism. The author's love of what they have written does not mean immunity from critisism. There actually is no immunity from criticism, which is why it helps to deal with it gracefully.

This was not graceful. And this, author, was not rape. Criticism of a fanfic NEVER WILL BE like rape, okay?, because only rape is like rape, and excuse me for a moment while I scream a few Norwegian words inside my head about that fact.

I need a stiff drink and some good football, I do.
misscam: (Wanksignal)
Yes, I am alive.

Just stuff and life and the WoW guild I belong to ending and various vaguely depressing stuff and yeah, life. It's all made me moody.

Meanwhile, fandom has truckered on and SPN fandom has had a bit of a car wreck.

It all starts when an author writes a SPN RPS fic set in post-earthquake Haiti - and apparently started on it pretty much instantly after the earthquake.

Can you count the ways in which this is a bad idea? I sure can count several.

1) TOO SOON TOO SOON TOO SOON
2) It's a Jared/Jensen story, and thus the setting of Haiti becomes more of a backdrop and the earthquake a prop for a romance.
3) The main characters are white, while Haiti's population is not. The potential to go wrong with this is already high, especially given point 2.
4) Using Haiti as the setting, but changing the facts of it as the author pleases, making it even more of a convenient prop that can be changed at will.
5) Using actual images of earthquake victims in the artwork for the fic.
6) Romance in the face of tragedy can be comforting if it is in spite of it, just as compassion and hope and life going on in spite of tragedies can be. It shows human will to survive and live on. Implying a tragedy as a good thing because it helped bring about a romance? People affected by the tragedy (and plenty of others) might not take too kindly to that.
7) Calling it the best idea ever beforehand and claiming to have done a 'decent job of it' when first confronted with the story maybe having a few issues.
8) Writing it racist starts a whole other list of bad.

On point 8, I point you to some of the quotes from the fic. Now, I am whitey mcpale-viking of the cold north and I am no expert on racism. But that to me reeks of a certain racism - the kind that many will say isn't intended as malicious or even intended at all, but is deeply seated in society. The sort that makes a lot of us non-PoC quite defensive, because it is uncomfortable to consider yourself racist and hey, it wasn't intentional, right?

That can be right. But that doesn't make it okay. That isn't a get out of jail free card. That isn't a defence. That isn't absolution. And if it's treated as an excuse, it will never change, either.

So don't use it as one. And FFS, don't name a big black cat after a big black character that walks and talks magical negro trope. That's just... Aiai.

This post has a summary of some of the troubling aspects, it's being discussed at Unfunny Business and the author has made an apology of sorts. Don't know if this will be the end of it.

And in the real world, Haiti is still suffering from the effects of the earthquake. It is still possible to donate. Google lists some options, and you can check your aid organisation of choice as well.

ETA: Oh excellent, she isn't the only one to have done this. *facepalm*

I can has new LJ headers! Made by the very lovely [profile] distaff_exile. They are a Norway one, a TARDIS one, a FlashForward one and a coming WoW one. But now I gotta figure out a layout or stylesheet to fit them all so I can easily alternate.

We bring you today's Hooooooooooly Overreaction, Fandom Batman!: In which authors of a Stargate AU open up for people to write stories based on the central family - and then literally says 'fuck you' to someone with a darker take on it. And everyone who complimented said dark take ficlet. And also the ficlet is slurring all those serving in the military and vomiting poison and hurting an ideal.

... Yeah. Man, that's a lot of fuck you and rage. Wow. I get being attached to your fanfic and all, but whut. That's just maybe a little bit too fucking far.

Viking paradise, a British reporter calls Norway and goes on to caution against too-simple explanations of why Norway does well, and thus how others (like the UK) can as well.

Then of course everyone tries to explain or explain away Norway in the comments anyway. Especially people who've been here once and thus are experts, of course.

It's actually hard to understand a country, I think. Because a country is its people and people vary and are complicated and contrary. I've been trying to understand Italy of late, and the US before that and Australia when I lived there and I always end up at least a little confused. So Norway is Norwegians and we're a peculiar lot, yes.

But with very nice weather this weekend that was. I even got a bit of colour and now look slightly less like a Scandinavian ghost now as well. And today is 100 years since women got the right to vote in Norway - local and regional elections first, then national ones a few years later. Maybe take a moment to remember that in some countries, women can't even do this most elementary democratic act.

I hope the future will change that.

In other news:

- Portugal has its first gay marriage. Go Portugal.

- Nordic bank Nordea sells shares in BP, citing a lack of transperency over the oil spill. That's actually my bank, heh. Well, well.

- Porn actor falls off cliff following a stand-off with the police. He was accused of attacking colleagues with a samurai sword, which was apparently used as a prop. For porn, I assume. Yeah, I don't know
misscam: (Oh-kay)
In which we learn that jacking off on someone's face while they sleep is a-okay! and Cam learns she shouldn't read links when she's in a good mood.

Good mood caused by:
- Awesome May weather.
- Last night's FlashForward, in which Spoilers! ) That latter part, I can really believe.
- I (and five others) won a contest on Facebook arranged by Norwegian TV2 and I appropriately am getting a FlashForward t-shirt from them. Hah.
- Upcoming weekend.
- Lunch with dad, to many discussions of politics and the UK and the Magna Carta. Our conclusion was that the UK system was a fair bit bonkers. Then we had ice cream.
- Have had many amusing conversations about the UK election on Twitter.
- Have apple cake.
- Tromsø is still head of the football league. Ahahaha.

In which we further learn that LJ posts is the new plagiarism hip. Seriously, what the hell is even the point of that?

(Also, that Diana Gabaldon thing? 'Fanfic is dirty porn which my books aren't at all having, no-ope!' Oh-kay then!)

LJ is apparently buggering my comment notifications somewhat. Apologies if I fail to reply to something!

1 - Leave a comment, saying you want to be interviewed.
2 - I will respond; I'll ask you five questions.
3 - You'll update your journal with my five questions, and your five answers.
4 - You'll include this explanation.
5 - You'll ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

Questions and answers )

In which we finally learn people can also be awesome. Just to end on a sort of good note.
misscam: (Norwegian for oh cock)
What would you like to see Doctor Who crossed over with in a fanfic? (So far I got WoW, Star Trek and FlashForward - BSG I've done before, but might include it anyway.)

Meanwhile, sending a show's creator fanfic from the show is still a bad idea, and probably unlikely to wind him over to your ships as well.

I see familiar faces, too. And Big Bang Theory is just starting season three here in Norway, so the timing amused me.

Speaking of new on telly, a show that is starting soon here in Norway has me vaguely excited - 'All for Norway' (the official Royal motto, actually) a show where Norwegian-Americans visit Norway for the first time and compete to be the 'most Norwegian'. The potential for light mocking of both Norwegian and American cultural difference is good, especially since they're being subjected to the less-than-urban Norway as well. I shall keep you posted if anything particulary amusing occurs.

In other news:

CERN's Large Hadron Collider sucessfully produced record-breaking high-energy particle collisions, and the world didn't end or have a flashforward due it. Rocking!

Ricky Martin announces he's gay, very few are particulary suprised. Still, good for him for coming out.

Several teens charged after a 15-year-old commits suicide. Apparently they'd been bullying her for months - though I wonder what the statutory rape charges are about. Either way, nasty story.

And now for something completely different, here's Hugh Jackman dancing in an ice tea commercial.
misscam: (Wanksignal)
Well, in several, actually. House, BSG, Doctor Who...

We start our tale in House fandom, where there are several popular ships and thus several popular shipping comms. One such was [community profile] house_cuddy, where a post in Russian got several members making some rather nasty comments about Russians in general. Mod [profile] lissie_pissie made a post that was Not Okay and also that moderated posting was now on.

So far, so normal in the life of a mod. But then [profile] fishingvegas, who is a maintainer on the comm, deleted that post, removed [profile] lissie_pissie as a mod and announced that to the comm. Comm members were less than pleased and told him so. And then [community profile] house_cuddy was deleted.

People made a temporary comm - [profile] housecuddy_temp - complained on their own journals and suddenly [profile] hourse_cuddy was back again. This time with a post by mod [personal profile] hihoplastic (who apparently had been mod originally, but had been busy elsewhere for a while) that she was now mod, and would like people's comments in a screened post. (But no drama, please!)

Then [profile] hourse_cuddy was deleted again. Still is, at writing. (This may change.)

*stares and boggles* Yeah. I'm not in fandom or care about any of the ships, but that's pretty shitty to have happen to a comm you're fond of.

Meanwhile, in BSG fandom, an author is not happy about anon comments on her story on an anon meme and respons. Several other issues seem to be involved as well. Fandoms die not in whimpers, but in wank and anonmemes?

(I haven't read the story - haven't read any BSG story in a while - and I am not too fond of self-promotion, as there is a strong resistance to pushing yourself out there in Norwegian culture. The US has a quite different culture there, and hey, that's the world. I think the key is just to remember personally not digging something ≠ it being bad. You can dislike something because it is bad, sure, but you can also dislike something due to personal taste. And man, sometimes I wish I had it in me to push my own stories a bit more, because I do like feedback and it makes my day. But cultural codes are strong, you know?)

Returning from that digression, a post at [profile] tennant_love with pictures of David and his girlfriend (must be a member of the comm to see it now; it was originally unlocked) makes the mouse come out with possible trollish intentions. The girlfriend gets accused of neglecting her child, being ugly and implied not worthy of David, but all the anon hate is not all motivated by jealousy, noooo.

Mod steps in and disables anon commenting.

Last two situations do make me wonder - anon comments and anon memes: Good for fandom, bad for fandom, or would the sentiment in them just come out in other ways if expressing them anon was not a possibility? I tend to lean a bit towards the third, but which of them is true could very well vary from fandom to fandom.

As for me, I've had an exhausting week - also emotionally - and I need this weekend to recharge oh so much. Anyone got any batteries?

In other news, Nepal is to legalize gay marriage and will offer ceremonies on Mount Everest.

VictoriaBitter gets outed as thanfiction in Harry Potter fandom. [profile] thanfiction is apparently a somewhat popular fanfic author, and hoooooooooo boy. VB is infamous in Lord of the Rings fandom, and if you read here, you'll see why. I was around for some of the aftermath of VB and.... Well, those were interesting times.

The Internets: You might change fandom, but if you don't change style, certain things may catch up with you.

Then there is the 436 pages of "Save Ianto Jones Report" (as linked here) and what. WHAT. It's going to be sent or has been sent to the BBC, apparently. Not sure if it's officially connected to [community profile] savecoffeeboy or not, but as the 436 pages (again, WHAT) contains quotes and artwork from people who hasn't been asked permission or even want to be on there, I sense wank. Hoo yes.

Neither situation could possibly end too well. Man, did someone declare it batshit wank weekend and I missed the notice?

In any case, the wankshelter bar is open. Anyone want a drink?
misscam: (Gift)
A Chinese national has been barred entry to China and is now living at an airport in Japan. You can read his blog here.

*eyeballs Chinese government* Seriously, seriously uncool. I worry about the direction in China sometimes. Over 30 years since Mao died now and China's economy has opened, but the government hasn't opened much else.

Where will China be in another 30 years? For that matter, where will Norway be? Where will the world be? Man, I almost wish I had a flashforward to know. But I'm probably going to have to use the old-fashioned time machine to find out - life, day by day.

Meanwhile in fandom, Snape fans go off on Lily and anyone not Snape, basically. Okay, Alan Rickman IS hot (mmm-mm) but you can lust him without turning Snape into Victim of the World That Only You Understand, trust me. And without turning on sexist language and character bashing too.

(Incidentally, am I the only one to like Alan Rickman and not go mad for Snape?)

Various stuff:

- All gifts and cards were sent last week for those who signed up, so if they haven't arrived already, they will soon. (I know some have - it's nice of you let me know so I don't have to worry about lost post.) Hope they cheer up a bit.

- Been nominated for a Spock/Uhura award, apparently. (In the pre-movie category, for The Logic of Languages.) Since I've only written three for that pairing, I'm pretty flattered. Reminds me I should finish my Doctor Who/Star Trek crossover when I get time, though.

- Having the Week of Hell, which should hopefully end after the 15th when my holiday starts. If I am a bit grumpy and on edge meanwhile, please forgive me.

- New patch for World of Warcraft this week. Time to take on some Lich King arrogance, yo.

- Someone stole a Walking With Dinosaurs dinosuar! Okay, those things are proper awesome, but still. Bad thieves!
misscam: (Sleeep)
I so shouldn't be awake. Yet I appear to be. A few reasons for that.

- Brother and his girlfriend have gone back to Holland. Bit of peace is nice again but I'll also miss them. Nothing like contrary feelings.

- Blizzard decided to unleash patch 3.2 a week before I was expecting it. Oi. Gotta update all my addons, get tactics for new raid dungeon, sort out changes to all my characters and prepare for a lot of 5man dungeons this week.

- There is apparently an Internet petition to get Michael Jackson nominated to the Nobel Peace Prize. Oh no no no no. First off, you cannot nominate someone who's died. You very firmly cannot, as it's stated in Afred Nobel's will. Secondly, you can't nominate him. Only select people can formally nominate for that award (included here are former winners, university professors in certain fields, members of naitonal assemblies and various others) so petitions this like this needs to be directed at someone eligble to nominate and not the award committee itself. (Research, people! You can do it.) Thirdly, OH COME ON.

- Reading material the first: Poster rants about not being warned for slash; wank ensues. Oi.

- Reading material the second: Secret gets posted about Uhura and skin colour; a lot of comments ensue. (I'm in there too.)

- Reading material the third: Who is going to want to see Downey Jr. and Law make out? I don't think it would be appealing to women says a former movie critic. Oh yeah. And there isn't a whole porn genre dedicated to men who like to see women get it on either. Oh, wait...

- Every time I try to go to bed, my brain starts writing in my head. Random summaries ("Uhura is informed, Kirk is curious, Spock is not telling and McCoy wishes he didn't know." - yeah, now I just need the story for that one) and odd notes ("a foursome through a friendship under construction") and crossover ideas (how would the Doctor and Spock get along given one very tragic thing in common?). SHUT UP BRAIN.

- I'm stocking my iPod with new stuff. Know how I discover a lot of songs I stick on there? Watching fanvids, of all things.

- There is more than one guy out there who likes to do it with horses. (If you've forgotten the first, I give you the epic "His 'wife'? A horse.") I'm scared, Internets.

*eyes bed*
misscam: (No dissent!)
Ugh, ever had one of those 'can't hold down anything, not even water' kind of sicks? I am. Must've eaten something that very much didn't agree with me. Just hope I don't get dehydrated or something silly while waiting for it to settle down. Ugh.

On the topic of ugh: Republican Ohio state legislator John Adams of Sidney, has submitted a bill that would require a woman to obtain the permission of the man who impregnated her before she could receive abortion services.

Let me get this straight. I generally think it's a good idea that in case of a pregnancy, the two parties involved talk to each other. Ideally, it should be a joint decision. However, there are situations where that might not possible. Ultimately, a woman's will trumps the father's. I'm sorry, but it does. Because it's her body. Forcing her to carry a fetus to term against her will is just... I have no words. Don't even get me started on the bit about rape in there. I don't have the energy for that particular rage today.

I see Russell T. Davis was interviewed about reactions to Torchwood's Children of Earth. Comments get into it, as one might expect.

Also, RTD ships Winchester brothers, it seems.

Meanwhile, the new Star Trek movie led to a number of things and now a group would like the next one to include Kirk/Spock - in the name of equality.

However, not all get behind this idea and don't like that one ship is focused on and set up as the One That Would Represent Equality. It would also mean breaking up Spock and Uhura, and that doesn't go down well with everyone.

I must admit, I kinda found this movement (as they call themselves) tacky. It comes across way more 'we find this pairing hot, please stick it in the movie!' than 'hey, how about some representation of same sex couples that isn't made of fail?' The latter, I'm totally behind. The first is way more fannish entitlement. And shrouding that in a call for equality? I find that tacky, I do. (Plus, starting it with a version of 'I know this isn't really allowed, but I am going to post anyway'? Does not endear me.)

Also being talked about here and here.

Cam and Saz discuss Spock and Uhura, shallow, mushed ship names, RTD's brain and the Internet being for porn )

Well, well. First pictures of new Doctor in new costume are out and you can see them here. Also, if you click on the slideshow to see more, you'll also see something else. Cut for one spoiler )

I'm stocking the wankshelter with lots of booze, that's for sure.

Meanwhile, in another fandom close to you, a reader decides to e-mail an author some comments on a story, as she has a few issues with it. Author is not grateful and replies fairly snappishly back.

So the reader decides to publish the e-mail and the reply with digs at the author. When people point out reposting private correspondence might be seen as a bit of a dick move, reader apologizes (sorta) but keeps the posts up.

I guess the question is - at what point is someone an ass enough to make it okay to make public what was private exchanges, or is there even such a point?

Fandom wankery does sometimes involve the professionals too - looks like this Red Dwarf actor is still quite sore about recent events and are having a go at fans disagreeing with him.

Oh, Norman.

Finally to all anons who left a comment here - I didn't reply to all, but I hope all of you feeling down for various reasons will get reasons to feel better. Life can be a bitch, but it can also be awesome. I hope it gets to that with everyone.

I know I am not close with everyone, but if you ever feel like talking to someone, my IMs are listed in my profile. It's an open and standing offer.
misscam: (Nothing but the rain)
What to say.

Well, Norway's had very warm weather and I spent a lot of time outside getting a tan. Then cold weather came and clashed with the warm and wham bam we had thunderstorm on Friday and Saturday night. Fierce, too. I woke up at 3a.m. from the noise and it last until 5ish. Really loud, can't remember having seen anything like it in Norway before. Pouring rain too, 88mm within two hours. Some pictures from Friday's storm over Oslo here and over this area. Plus, it started some forest fires and the temprature fell over 10 degrees.

Quite freaky, really. On the bright side, bad weather made it all the easier to stay in and write some. Can't tell you what though, it's secret.

Doctor Who movie to be announced at ComicCon?

If so, I sense waaaaaaaaaank to follow. Maybe the wankshelter will have to restock again.

Fandom quiz!

If you get word that some readers are displeased a fic of yours didn't warn for dubcon, do you:

1) Argue it isn't dubcon
2) Apologise, add a duncon warning
3) Have a wanky fit over how you'd never ever write dubcon and anyone reading it like that must be meanies
4) Write a fanfic mocking the concept of dubcon

I give option four! That's certainly a new one, yes. Huh. Name looks vaguely familiar as well.

Meanwhile, if you'd like to look at something funnier, here are naked Swedes dancing with crispbread. No, really!

[profile] wendymr asked me to explain some icons.

Eight icons under the cut )

Ulduar raid beckons!
misscam: (Wanksignal)
Norway is having awesome, awesome weather. It's gloriously summer! So I've been a bit distracted and spending a lot of time outside, getting some sunburns in the process. I also finished fic (with beta now, yay? will be posted later tonight, yay?) and my guild managed a nice Ulduar achivement.

Which brings me to today's special. I bring you an epic US versus Europe battle, wherein utter stupidity, lack of perspective, insults and gross stereotyping of the painful kind rule the field.

And what causes this? World of Warcraft.

For those unfamiliar with World of Warcraft, a little bit of background is needed. Basically, once you take your character to a certain level of experience, you can bring together with other players (usually in formed guilds) go into a raid dungeon and battle bosses. These bosses vary in difficulty, and thus killing certain bosses gets a certain amount of prestige in the WoW world.

The most prestigious of all is to be the first guild in the world to kill a boss. Kinda like fandom has BNFs, WoW has big name guilds. One is Ensidia, a European guild. Another is Exodus, a US guild. And what happens when Exodus claims killing a boss hardmode that Ensidia hasn't yet - but it's then discovered Exodus exploited a bug in the game?

Wank happens. Hoo yes wank happens.

Warning: Nasty language at times.

full respect guys, dont let those whining garlic eating surrender monkeys get to ya (euros). I look forward to reading more of your guilds future adventures )

In conclusion - World of Warcraft is SERIOUS BUSINESS and having some painful stupidity appears to be something Europe and the US both have in common.

Let us share the pain.
misscam: (No dissent!)
Continuing the issue from my last post, which now seems to have blown up even more so. (I know, I know, I'm harping on this issue, but it's struck a nerve in more than one way.)

Getting away from the actual warn versus not-warn issue, the thing that really, really got me was the kind of arguments some of the not-so-keen-on-warning people were pushing out there.

A lot of them have now been deleted, but some are quoted here. Following [personal profile] aukestrel's 'suggestion' that [personal profile] impertinence seems 'to look for the negative in any situation and to paint yourself as more of a victim (if you could be) than you already are' she made this post (now deleted, that's a screencap of what was a public post) that rather reads like a suggestion [personal profile] impertinence is lying. There's also a delightful claim that victims are 'privileged' because of their trauma and a few claims to knowing [personal profile] impertinence's state of mental health and issues better than she does. And then there's the whole 'it's your own fault if you read it' and'well, victims of sexual assault should just get friends to read fics ahead of time and tell them if something in there might be triggery or just not read at all'.

Yeah, and I suppose I should never leave my house again since I could risk being raped again.

Look at the sort of arguments you're making. Just look. Take three deep breaths and look at those arguments and the things said in there. About rape victims. Those are shitty, nasty things to say.

So you feel dogpiled, badly treated and want to defend what seems a somewhat unpopular opinion. I can feel a bit of sympathy for you for feeling unfairly treated and having been called names. I can. But where is your compassion saying things like this to a victim of sexual assault, FFS? Look at those things said.

Because here are some of the delightful side-effects that come with being raped: (Will vary, depending on situation.)

1. People not believing you.

2. People making judgements on your sexuality because you were raped.

3. People thinking you carry part of the responsibility for being raped or plain out brought it on yourself.

4. The rapist not being brought to justice for what he/she did. (Frighteningly common.)

5. People implying you're making a bigger deal out of it than it was and playing the victim.

6. Triggers and possible PTSD.

7. People thinking they know exactly what you're going through and how to handle it.

Any of this look familiar? Looking at those arguments, I'm sure seeing recurring themes.

I've said this before and I say it again: rape is a shit thing to have happen to you. And the aftermath of it is no less so. Part of the reason for that is the sort of things I listed above. Those and some others are why so few rapes are reported, why so many people struggle to come forward with their stories. There is still a huge social stigma attached to rape for the victim. And that's bloody unfair.

Don't turn it on the victim. Have a little compassion. If for no other reason, do it because tomorrow it could be you. Or someone in your family. Or a friend. It will happen to someone you know, if it hasn't already.

If you don't want to warn, you don't want to warn. People will disagree with you, but don't argue your case this way. Really don't.

(I shall mention in the interest of fairness I'm a bit iffy on some things said and done by the other side as well. [profile] trigger_fence for instance, I'm not sure how I feel about that. I try to be aware of my bias and be somewhat fair here, but it's really hard when reading some of the comments. It's like being kicked in the stomach.)

I need a shower and breakfast and some reaffirming that people are also awesome, please.

How well will a post headed 'what's wrong with you people?' be recieved, I wonder?

(My brother actually met his girlfriend through World of Warcraft. They started chatting lots and eventually he went to Holland to meet her. Never really came back and they've been together two years now. I find it kinda cute.)

Meanwhile, a bit of beta drama - this sums it up (though with a particular viewpoint, FYI) with links to original posts.

Now I personally don't really ascribe to anything like 'the Cult of Nice'. Not because I encourage everyone to be as nasty as possible on the Internets (some do seem to have that goal!) but because I have trouble with the sense of stifling critisism that tends to come with it. And some bonus features. If you post fanfic, you just have to live with the fact that someone won't like what you write. (You don't have to like getting critisism, but taking it with a bit of grace is usually good.)

Still, a beta saying something to you and then slamming you in public to a friend at the same time and cheer at a sporking of a previous fic? That seems somewhat uncool to me.

A question for all you Americans - how bad does this financial crisis feel to you? Because I am just watching the news and that's often about companies and Wall Street downs and not really giving me a sense of how people in general are doing.

I can't really base it on how people in Norway are doing, since our country is a bit of an oddity.

In other stuff:

- Finished my remix and sent it to beta. Have a sneaking suspicion people will spot it as mine due to style, though. Oh well.
- How to horrify [personal profile] lotus79: Reveal that the man who had the idea of the creationist museum in the US was Australian. Then she got slightly back at me by revealing the dude went to the University I did and has science degrees. *facepalm* Seriously, to think the Earth is 6,000 years old evolution is the least of your scientic worries. You also have to argue with physics and chemistry (dating methods in particular), geology, astronomy, cosmology, molecular biology, genomics, linguistics, anthropology and archaeology, to name some.
- Mock bombs made of carrots create a slight scare in Sweden. Yep. Carrots.
- Norway is airing the US version of Life on Mars during primetime. This feels somehow wrong.
- Someone stole 16,128 bottles of beer (Norwegian newsreport here) thus leading to '16,128 bottles of beer on the wall' joke from a friend and now that damn song is stuck in my head.
- Summer is just lovely, but the weather until today wasn't. More of weather like this Sunday's, please.

How are things with you?
misscam: (Norway fjord)
We've had fantastic weather in Norway this extended weekend, and I've been enjoying it fully. Got bitten by various bugs and got some slight colour on me. Bring more of this weather on for summer, and I will be a happy, happy gal.

Meanwhile, the news about the murder of Dr. Tiller reached us here in Norway. My mother flat-out called the murderer a terrorist when I was talking to her about it, and that about sums up the general opinion in Norway.

Why we're just not having an abortion debate in Norway, and why I can be uneasy about abortion and still be pro-choice )

In more fandom stuff:

- Some alleged spoilers for the last Tennant special that if true, will cause so much wank. Hooo yes.

- The UK version of the 4.5 season of BSG have been released, with some deleted scenes. [profile] cutemaggie have linked YouTube uploads of some additional Adama and Roslin stuff here. I hope US version (coming on July 28th) has a lot more. Am greedy. Want more snogging too.

- Remember the LotR tinhats? I think I've found the next generation - shippers of Jared and Jensen (the Supernatural actors) who are convinced the guys are really together and just kept in the closet by evil PR. This is like deja vu all over again... Painfully so!

If you were promoting a new community - with a VIP even, allegedly - and you're not allowing mentions of slash ships, is it really a good idea to pimp it in a specifically slashy comm? And one that allows only promoting of places with the same focus?

Sometimes, you really should look at which comms you're posting to before you start the mad spamming, I say. Recently, someone included [community profile] time_and_chips in a mad spamming spree, only it got stuck in moderation because poster was new member. And because it contained a link to fanfic without a proper header, I kicked it back and told her (I presume) to repost with a proper header (and helpfully included a link with how to make one). So she did. Only she posted to the wrong comm. I guess she posted to so many she couldn't keep track of which was which. I laughed a little, because I'm mean.

Meanwhile, in Supernatural fandom, there appears to be a bit of a bruhaha surrounding a 'secret' posted to [profile] spnsecrets of a friendslocked post. There's a lot of arguing about it here and some here and here, mod eventually removes it after request by the poster whose flock it was, then declares posting screencaps of friendslocked material is okay and will be allowed and only taken down at specific request from whoever's flock it is.

Um. Now correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that a rather big fandom no-no? The person might be totally batshit insane, but I still find reposting friendslocked stuff uncool. Maybe I'm missing something since I'm not in the fandom and maybe that's just as well.

Also, a reminder: This coming week is Eurosong week. Two semi-finals and finale on Saturday. Yes. It's time for that madness again. Bring your alcohol! And did you know there was just released a movie about the junior version?

Comment here saying you want to play. I will find seven things off of your profile and you have to post in your journal with why you are interested in them. At that time, I will comment and squee. And possibly also participate in the fun by having you choose seven of my interests. We will go round and round and round.

misscam: (Are you there?)
So quite a few people wanted me to take pictures and post them during this holiday. Anything in particular you want to see pictures of? I'm taking suggestions. Inside, outside, locally abouts and in the nearest city could all be done.

Stuff:

- Bill Adama, is that you posting to [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets? Awww. (Spoilers for Daybreak there.)

- LOL, K9 the series trailer looks a bit... Kinda really, really bad.

- I'm sure most of you have seen this wank concerning Supernatural fandom by now, but still. I mention it anyway, because wow. I've watched like maybe three episodes of that show put together, but it sure seems to bring out some crazy.

- I was nominated in the [livejournal.com profile] smith_awards apparently - be interesting to see how that turns out. (And for Ten/Martha, heh. Figures it would be for a pairing I wrote very little for.) All the stuff related to the CoT/[livejournal.com profile] children_time awards has just made cynical, and really, wouldn't a yearly award or something be enough? Eh well. We'll see how both of those go.

- I'm a little in love with this screencap. I wants icon, but my skills suck. Can I bug one of you to make one?

- Dollhouse is probably going to be cancelled, right? I am pondering what shows to try (apart from L&O: UK) now that my beloved BSG is done with its run, but I'm hearing such varying reports of it and if it's to be gone soon anyway... Eh.

1. Reply to this post with 'Icons!', and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.
