I think as society gets a bit better on this, so will writing for various media and thus the variety of female characters will be greater and it'll be easier to find more favourites. Because it can be a bit limited sometimes.

Discworld women are a lot of awesome, though - and written by a man, which just goes to we are not from different planets and it's possible to write across gender gaps.
