(In news about little Miss Cleric - OFUM still be up, and I appear to have recieved a private message at GAFF with some "apology". I shall ponder carefully what to reply, oh yes.)
Fox News Suggests Canadian Katrina Generosity Meant To Embarrass George W. Bush
Gibson asks, "You know uh..Ambassador McKenna um..uh..uh..you know..justlemme uh..have you..uh..lemme address one thing. Uh we know that there's lots of people in Canada on the left side of the political spectrum who don't like George Bush. Is there any..any part of this..big Canadian help designed to..maybe embarrass the President?"
...
And I guess Europe also offered to help because we're eeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil socialists and sniggered evilly in our socialist beards when the hurricane hit. And clearly, all that help during the tsunami was to embarrass Indonesia. There is no such thing as sympathy or compassion.
I'm going to respectfully suggest that if the US government has come out looking bad due to the Katrina rescue effort, it managed that spectaculary on its own.

Look at your LJ "interests" list. If you have fewer than 50 interests, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five interests, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five interests, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than ten, pick all of 'em. List them on your LJ, and tell everyone exactly what it is about these things that interests you so much.
Australia - Well, I lived there. And quite enjoyed the country. It's full of odd creatures, ancient wonders and generally underappreciated stuff. Where else can you find proto-ants that died everywhere else hundreds of billions of years ago?
British humour - I grew up with the likes of Monty Python and Fawlty Towers. It has foreverwarped coloured my impression of what is funny. I love Blackadder, Red Dwarf, Little Britain, The Office, Absoloutely Fabelous... And the British funny writers like Douglas Adams (wail!) and Terry Pratchett.
CSI - One of my current favourite shows. Crime, brainy men, hot men, blood, violence andsex in my head makes that a given.
DVDs - DVDs are shiny. I like shiny. And commentary tracks. And extras. And shiny look of old favourite DVD shows in DVD wrapping.
Fanfiction - I write it. Obvious much?
Goodfic - I snicker and is amused at badfic. But I enjoyed goodfic. There needs to be more.
Hunks - Shallow as I am, I enjoy a good-looking fellow.
Lizards - They're kickass. I've loved lizards (and dragons) since I was young and if I could ever own a blue-tongue lizard, I would be happy. In the meantime I settle for having one tattooed on me.
Mythology - I was brought up in the echoes of Nordic mythology. It reveals a lot about where my people came from and was shaped by - and perhaps all the mythologies do the same for humanity at large.
OFUM - Honestly, this one is more listed because others added it to their interest list and I figured that if anyone did a search on it, my name should be there. So now it is.
Religion - I may not believe in any of the religions, but I still find them fascinating for what they say about humanity.
Silmarillion - Morgoth!
Theatre - I did drama for three years in Upper Secondary school. Great fun. And I still enjoy plays.
Warrick/Catherine - One of my 'ships. He's hot, they both have a certain darkness in them and... Well, I like. Shut up.

Why don't you send our search and rescue guys that saved 100+ people and got there five days before anyone from your own administration back up here and those 100 people can just...die? And please, take my 100 dollar check and shove it up your fucking ass.
And some Americans wonder why we can't stand some of their countrymen. I swear to God...

Date: 2005-09-19 06:51 am (UTC)Uh... a government reacting "quickly" with aid should, IMHO, be a GOOD thing. A thing to be envied, even. If there's any embarrassment of the U.S. government resulting from this, it certainly reflects more on the U.S. government than on Canada.
FOX, quit saying things that are more likely to embarrass sane Americans.

Date: 2005-09-19 07:03 am (UTC)You know, I get the feeling that within the Bush administration's eyes, Canada is damned if they do and damned it they don't. What FOX saying is, if our urban search and rescue teams had stayed put, drinking the ubiquitous beer and talking about the soon to be returning hockey season, the Bush administration would not have accused us of ignoring them and willfully not offering assistance? Please. They would have started calling Canadian bacon Freedom bacon, or something equally as assinine.
But that never happened because the Canadian urban search and rescue teams did get to areas of the disaster site and did everything in their power to assist the victims of the hurricane...five days before anyone else got to some of those places. And now they get crapped on with the suggestion that it's all part of a Master Plan to make the current administration look bad? 'Scuse me, but the current administration doesn't need any help from us Canadians to help them look bad.
::feels the lack of an appropriately patriotic Canadian icon::

Date: 2005-09-19 08:30 am (UTC)And the german election? Ah well... the thing is, people may not be all too happy with the policy of the last SPD-government, but they started renewing a few matters that should have been tackled for years and years. And Mrs. Merkel's party silently signed (and agreed with) most of the changes - and then yelled around that this would be the end of the social state, blocking urgently needed steps wherever possible. And it is a fact that more than 50 % of the german people still want Schroeder as chancelor (me included). It's as simple as that. I would really like to see a woman do the job, but not her. (Beside the fact that when that Iraq disaster started and the whole world stared disbelievingly at the lies spread by the US-government, Mrs. Merkel took the next flight to Washington to show her support. Thank God she had nothing to say then, or our soldiers would die in Iraq, too.)
Sorry for deleting and revision. My fingers were faster than my brain.

(When she was asked during a Merkel/Schroeder-TV duel what she thought about the failure of the american government during the Katrina disaster, she wasn't able to answer that question and fled into giving another answer to an already answered question. Of course everybody noticed it and of course he took the chance, answering the question for her. He said she should at least be able to say what the american president had just said himself - that things didn't work as they should. I guess she lost many votes in that moment; people remembered all too clearly her behaviour when the Iraq War started).

Date: 2005-09-19 02:27 pm (UTC)Are we supposed to let people die just because they were okay with it? I can't fathom any public official or any news anchor saying that we shouldn't have saved lives because it embarrassed them. It's not our fault that they were so badly prepared for and so utterly complacent with the storm's effects.
Further, what amuses me is that they have spent years telling us to increase our military budget, as it's currently inadequate (in their eyes). And yet, there we are, able to save lives five whole days before they even get to the area. (Though, I don't believe it was a military unit that was sent.) We're sending ships and equipment and whatnot.

The Linkspartei themselves say they don't want to reign, they want to be in opposition, rather.
But they'd be needed to get a majority together with the "GrĂ¼nen"...
