My, oh my. Parts of GAFF and parts of time_and_chips went at it and I missed it?

No wonder maureenlycaon calls me wank repellent. All the wanks I might've had a stake in (in this case, being a member of both places) are over before I even have a chance to wade in. Ah well. Perhaps just as well. If I was too busy being involved in that, I'd probably forget to write fanfic.

Am I the only one to find the Doctor in jeans a bit odd? Hum. Still fanciable, though. Yes.

Personally, I think both sides there were being rather ridiculous. The GAFFers were being a little two harsh on a fic I wouldn't consider Godawful (I'd consider it mediocre, personally. They have some points on the OOC-ness of certain characters, and the fact said fic appears to have no real guiding plot to it, but it isn't bad. It's just a bit boring, really - I gave up after a couple of chapters), whereas the T&C types that crashed the thread were being a little bit too fangirly. All "How dare you insult my ship!" and "Criticsim is bad!" and taking it far to personally.

So, it was a wank in which everyone seems to come out looking bratty and immature. *sighs* I had hoped the fandom was better than this. Though considering they reacted here, I foresee a lot of wank and a bit of schism come Christmas. Because I just know some of the T&Cers will hate Ten on sight for not being Nine. There are roots of it going on already...

It's certainly not the worst fic I've seen about - it's no "Celebrian" or "My Inner Life". And I did laugh at parts of it. I'm willing to forgive a few things if a fic has a certain charm and all. Wasn't that many GAFFers involved in it either, but on a forum with open registration, you're always gonna have some wanky ones too. And some of us on GAFF do like Doctor/Rose. I certainly do.

Oh, I've noticed. I'm on the fence on Ten so far, but some seem to have made up their opinion already. Does not bode too well. Still, fingers crossed. Might go well. Fandom does plesantly surprise sometimes.

Well, you wouldn't get that many GAFFeers, involved, seeing as Who isn'y nearly as large a fandom as HP or LotR. And if they are like me, they tend to avoid sporking fandoms they don't know at least reasonably well. And I am aware that you have some Doctor/Rose shippers there - these just didn't seem to be them. And then the T&Cers came along and were overly defensive (which makes them painfully easy to mock...)

Well, my opinion of Ten is fairly good so far because A)I have a high opinion of Tennant's acting skills, B) The cast and crew seem to have responded well to him, C) The set photos look great, D) He's a big Who fan, and so is likely to put a lot of enthusiasm into it, and E) I think he's very good looking. But final judgement shall be saved until I see it on screen.

Yes, fandom does pleasantly surprise at times. And just as often, it is an unpleasant surprise. *thinks about shippers reacting to HBP*

Ugh - I away when that happened (first for a comm and then because of no access due to NTL stupidity) and when I finally got back online, I found out that had happened over at GAFF and people were riding in in the name of T&C. There's actually a post somewhere on T&C around that time where I asked them to stop it because really didn't want to look like hypocrits when we were asking people to leave us alone in our own comm.

I'm actually a bit worried about what may happened come Christmas...

I would agree with all of that. I know he only had two minutes or so in the last episode, but that 'hmmm, new teeth' line killed me, and I think he came across very well indeed even in such a brief appearance. I am looking forward to seeing more of him. :)

Quite. It is easier to judge how bad how fic is if you know the fandom, though sometimes it's just so awful you don't need. to. The OP did seem very persistent in the comments, which did make me wonder about agenda. Ah well. Wouldn't be the first time.

Still, taking these sort of things with some humour does wonders for your PR.

Yeah, I gather that. I haven't a) seen him act, really b) read too many cast or crew reports c) admitedly, yes d) that does me please and e) I find CE hotter. So the fence is quite comfy at the moment. We'll see how it goes, but I do have good vibes about that, that I do.

Fandom surprises, I guess is the general agreement. Sometimes, tackling huge controversial issues I'm sure will be the wank of all time... just doesn't happen and everyone are mature and nice. Then they all wank about something utterly insignificant the next week.

*nods* I saw you posted there in the GAFF thread too. For the record, it has never been the policy of most people at GAFF to involve the authors. It's considered fairly bad taste to do so, as is attacking the author rather than stories. Most people treat it as a place to vent and get out of the system and be a lot more constructive when in contact with authors.

Yeah. Might be wise keeping a sharp eye on things in that period. People posting their opinions on the ep might be where the wank easily happens. People must of course be allowed to give their opinion, but on the other hand, mustn't let it degrade into bashing. Tricksy balance. Fingers crossed, though.

Oh, I realized that GAFF tries not to attack/involve authors, and I know that the fact that the T&Cers went in was the reason it turned into the thread it did. That's why I asked them to get out and stay out. Doesn't help anything on either side, really.

And I'm planning to keep an eye on things best I can. I may even ask for some other people besides the mods to keep an eye on things as well in case any of us happen to miss anything. Like you said, opinions - yes. Bashing - no. And I'm definitely going to do mod post before hand reminding people. :)

Nope, never does. It's quite often friends and/or readers of the author that create the most problems, though. Hell hath no fury like a friend offended, I guess. And when people come in herds, they just winding each other up until it just gets nasty. I've known people to be complete assholes in an enraged herd and quite lovely one-on-one. You did quite the right thing, me thinks.

Probably wise. Sounds like you've given it thought, which should help majorly. A lot of wank happens because mods are caught off-guard by what happens and by the time they figure out what to do, it's just too late. The trainwreck has already occured. And with a sizable comm like yours, a few extra eyes is certainly wise.

It's probably the same reason why smaller fandoms don't usually get fandom_wanked - no-one knows enough to understand what's going on. And yes, the OP was somewhat wanky. Only a little though, and they seemed to cool down a little later on, which bodes well.

Fandom surprises, indeed, but this is an ancient, old argument in Who fandom. Every time there's a new Doctor---and I mean every stinkin' time, go back and read old issues of Doctor Who Magazine-----there's a boatload of bitching and whining about his age, his look, his acting, his credentials, his outfit, his accent, and so on and so on.

Every new Doctor gets this treatment. I'm an old, old hand at this fandom, met many of the actors, worked a few cons, edited a newsletter (and am bragging shamelessly) and each new Doctor I've seen, from Peter Davidson on, has gotten a load of pre-viewing crap. Hell, even the sainted Tom Baker had folks doubting he'd do well after Pertwee, and Tom Baker is the Doctor I started on.

It's no big deal. Every actor who's been the Doctor has been The Doctor, if you know what I mean, and I'm sure Ten will do just fine. Plus, he's a hottie, so I'm inclined to give the benefit of the doubt.
