So I've been following the Rose love/hate debate a while - been kinda hard to miss in Doctor Who fandom - and some of the stuff said has made me ponder some.
And here's what I'm wondering - what factors outside of Canon itself do you think can affect your level of like or dislike? (If you're not in Doctor Who fandom, just replace Rose with any other character who is a bit disputed in a fandom and you might feel strongly about one way or another. The issue does not just apply to Doctor Who fandom, I'm thinking.)
The hype?
For example, some have expressed a dislike for the hype surrounding Rose - 'bestest companion ever!' and similar claims. Can hating the hype lead to stronger dislike of the character? Or if you like the hype, the opposite?
The level of identification with a character?
Does identifying with a character automatically make it easier to like her? Is love of Rose stronger for feeling she's 'just like me'? Is the dislike stronger for finding not much in common at all?
The fandom?
If a group really, really likes Rose and you don't, can you feel stronger about it because of that? Or if someone hates her, and you don't, can you feel inclined to like her more in retaliation, as it were?
Fanfic?
Has drippy fanfic about her turned you off? Has some really great fanfic warmed you more to her? (If you can think of specific fanfics that have impacted how you view a character, that'd be excellent to know.)
The actor?
Has your opinion of Billie Piper affected your opinion of Rose at all? Positive, negative, whichever?
Other?
Is there stuff I've forgotten to touch upon? Has one reason factored larger than the others and why do you think that is? I be curious. Satisfy me, please?
(Also, for helpful reasons - my flist got both likers and dislikers about, so be a trifle diplomatic, yeah?)
