Weird dream of the week:

Brother and I are on the run from Gestapo during WW2. Brother has affair with hot, hot German officer who helps us escape. (!) Is saved by mother in trusty car by driving through graveyard.

Conclusion:

Serious overdose of WW2 books. Have also been corrupted by slash. Am very generous in giving hot loveinstrests for brother rather than claiming for myself. Really.

Meanwhile, people wank over Labradoodles.

Ha, sadly the labradoodle wank reminds me of my mom. Her thing wasn't nearly as crazy (IMO) and I supported her, but... my local paper ran an article about pet stores (don't remember the actual point, but it was certainly a positive article) and my mom wrote them an angry letter, because pet stores are really pretty horrible in multiple ways (get dogs from puppy mills, depending on the store the dogs aren't often aren't kept well there either) which they printed. Around the same general period of time, the New York Times ran an article by a woman who was complaining that her purebred puppy (some sort of terrier)wasn't well behaved from the start (dogs need to be trained? WHO KNEW!) and my mom wrote them an angry letter as well, which they also printed. So... my mom is bringing the dogwank! to a wider audience. Alas, her letters provided factual information to back up her points and weren't batshit, but still. Somewhat wanky.

People's ability to wank over anything never ceases to amaze me.

No, I can't just "ENJOY THEM", as this is in essence, a big PR ad for your neighborhood backyard breeder. Look at the responses! People see a picture like that, and want one based off the picture. CO has the opportunity to reach a lot of people, and decides to put a cute face on a decidedly NOT cute issue. Instead, the webmaster could do the right thing and not contribute to influencing others to get these dogs.

I posted in another fandom for quite awhile and there was a gal who would hem folks up in IMs and tell stories about being rich and partying with the Hiltons, etc...Well, one day she hems me up and I'm trying to be nice/polite and chatting, but I realize it's the same gal under a new nick...

GQ had done a parody of the Hiltons about the Marriot sisters...This gal knows I live in NY so she starts telling me how she just attending a certain movie premiere in NY (which actually premiered days before in LA) and that she had partied at Bungalow 8 with, get this...The Marriot sisters...Well, since I'd read the parody I started asking questions that I knew she'd have the answers from the article...Back her right into a corner...

Then sent her the link to the online article where GQ outted the Marriot sister parody...LOL (Plus, the hotel chain doesn't have sisters of that age, and the hotel chain is Marriott...with 2 't's...)

My Not-so-Inner Kennel Chick is rolling around at about 500rpm in her grave laughing her ass off at the Labradoodle Wank. The original wanker had some good points, but she's overdoing it and making my side look stupid. Yes, not enough people research their breed(ing)s. But no, one picture is not going to stop/start puppy mills. Get the facts out in a less inflammatory manner and maybe more people will listen. And [wank on] "designer breeds," even guaranteed spazzy ones like labradoodles, never seemed to be quite as problematic to me as "stupid dog owners." [wank off] (The worst part, though, is that the OmG!serious poster has the same name as my manager.)

It's not anything new to me, though; my job is one of the few where everybody can talk about cockapoos all day with a straight face. (This is why smushed pairing names never bothered me. Nothing can top teh Bad!Punnery of actual breedings.)

Okay, I have to admit, the designer mutt issue always makes me choke back a little bile. Because I can't understand why people are buying badly bred mutts when millions of them are languishing in shelters. It's this whole issue of pets as a TREND that sickens me.

Thing is, though, designer breeding is harldy new. It's just perhaps more easy now, but many of the current breeds came from human tinkering about. Ignoring that fact doesn't help arguments, really.

Humans make trends out of many things, sadly. Herd mentality at work, perhaps.

Hum. Not sure. We don't have too many stray dogs or cats, but there's probably some. Not a huge problem that I know of, though. We do have shelters (I've volunteered in some) and I'd imagine some stray cats would be offed by foxes and such. (Even owned cats suffer that fate sometimes. One of mine did.) I know there are sometimes issues with people dumping their pets because they're going on summer holiday for weeks and are too lazy to find ways to get the cat/hamster/whatever looked after. Media usually does stories on it and public interest leads to new owners.

*shrugs* I don't know how it's been of late, though. I haven't heard any particular stories.

Ok, designer breeding is hardly new but most of the dog breeds that have been around for a suitable number of generations (say 20-30 at least) have given the breeders -if they cared about the breed and didn't just do that for the income- to check for liabilities both behavioral and physical.
While a mutt would probably lack the bad genetics from too much inbreeding (the hind legs of German shepherds, or the eye-problems of an American-standard Persian cat or cocker) these aren't mutts, but results of two different lines of purebred, that have their own set of..err..accidents.
->I had a German shepherd mutt (and his even-more-mutty daughter too) and they ended both limping.. :'(
