The polar bear debate. All this over cute Knut, who proves once again baby animals are deadly with the awww-factor. (This picture always do it to me. AWWW WANT ON ICON. Football and the cute, what's not to love? AWWWW. HEHEHE. Okay, enough.) And if this can be used to raise some awareness on the rather dire straits of polar bears, I say that is a good thing. He's not always going to be little and cute, but polar bears are awesome animals. The world would be poorer without them. Therefore cute is an acceptable weapon for the greater good.
When I see a fic titled Dårlig Ulv, my heart weeps a little. BAD NORWEGIAN. BAD. It's all the show's fault for using it in the first place, of course. Someone probably used Babelfish when putting that in the script. For shame. ("Dårlig ulv" can either read as a wolf that tasted real bad, or a wolf that got sick. Both leave slightly amusing mental images, but not the one "Bad Wolf" is meant to convey, me thinks.)
... And this is still my biggest problem with "Doomsday". There might possibly be something wrong with me.
Meanwhile, Doctor Who fandom gears up for series three that starts in a little over a week. And the BBC website has updated with wallpapers that can be seen as vaguely spoilery. There is snogging! Okay, other sources reveal it's a "genetic transfer", but HOY SNOGGING. This is where I reveal myself as a very bad Doctor/Rose shipper, since I find this stuff rather hot and look forward to it. Also think I like Martha so far. And want snogging icon with "Genetic transfer. With tongues" on. And I am very pleased with self for being excited over Doctor Who again.HOTNESS! ALIENS! FUNNY! TARDIS! MARTHA'S LEATHER JACKET! CPR! SHINY! It might be a very good series indeed.
Fandom reacts some. Fandom reacts some more. A mod returns to react to reactions. Nothing too bad yet, but I think we'll get wank at one point or another. This shocks no one, I'm sure.
That reminds me next week is the CSI episode where Grissom comforts Sara with actual touching. HOY TOUCHING. Given how CSI fandom is CSI fandom, this is bound to cause wank. This shocks no one, I'm sure.
I'll try to keep all updated. And the wankshelter stocked with plenty of alcohol. HOY ALCOHOL.
Anyone wanna predict a Doctor Who or CSI wank? (Not just in vague ways, that's cheating.) If you get one right, I will give you honourary title of Wankic.

Date: 2007-03-22 11:51 am (UTC)Also, welcome to my world with rubbish Bad Wolf translation. At least 'schlechter Wolf' madkes some weird kind of sense, is the norwegian just rubbish?
Also I was tempted to post the News of Who Spoilers on T&C, but I was too scared
of your mod whipthe reactions...no subject

Date: 2007-03-22 12:16 pm (UTC)Eh, depends how you define rubbish. "Dårlig" does mean bad in a way, but you use it to epress something that is poor/bad. As in "a bad/poor grade". "That went badly/poorly". "I'm feeling bad/sick." It doesn't mean the kind of bad that is related to evil or naughty, like in the story of the bad wolf and Little Red Riding Hood. Someone has probably looked in a dictionary, seen "dårlig" can be a word for bad and not realised it doesn't translate to all sorts of bad. Err.
I would have had to whip you then, since Martha - Doctor snogging is definitely off topic for T&C.
Though no doubt some reactions would be amusing.Series three stuff in general is OT, minus stuff that might reference Rose or Doctor/Rose, that sort of thing.no subject
Date: 2007-03-22 12:27 pm (UTC)PETA... I've never worn fur and I feel quite strongly about protecting endangered species and keeping habitats for wildlife, but PETA makes me want to throw whales on them on a regular basis.

Date: 2007-03-22 01:21 pm (UTC)We were debating for pages upon pages on the OG if it was a deliberate mistake, turned out there's a chess move called 'Schlechter Wolf' named after Carl Schlechter, something about 'playing to win' IIRC. All those theories about Parting of the Ways... Boy, were we disappointed when it turned out it was just a translation mistake.

Date: 2007-03-22 01:29 pm (UTC)(...) These bombs appear to have been used during raids on London up until early 1942. They rarely exploded - early theories were that they were "a bit rubbish", but a few people wondered if something more clever was going on.
We were headdesking like whoa when that was updated ^^

Date: 2007-03-22 01:39 pm (UTC)You're not a protest organisation unless you find something to protest about - and get attention for protesting about. This certainly does that.
However, there are legitimate concerns about humans raising baby animals, there is no doubt about that.

Date: 2007-03-22 05:08 pm (UTC)The article is right about non-domesticated animals--the insanely adorable polar bear will grow up to be as much a polar bear as a zoo environment allows. That's one of the dangers of dog/wolf crosses and in one case I know personally about, a dog/dingo cross. The dog/dingo was adopted from a shelter and was a great member of the family until one of the kids got mauled when they sneaked up on him and his dingo instincts kicked in. Kid got bit in the face, several stitches later, and the dog/dingo was put down. I imagine a fully wild animal wouldn't act much differently. Last I heard, bears don't imprint, so it's not the same danger that the efforts here to raise the extremely endangered California Condors face (all condor chicks are fed with puppets that look like condors so they don't imprint on a person, such things like that).
But then, I suppose a dead bear can get in touch with its inner bear much easier than a live bear that's been handled by humans...
*cough* Excuse the rant...

Date: 2007-03-22 09:58 pm (UTC)I'll wear faux fur, at worst. I'm big on satin and velvet with animal prints in paticular, because they feel like it and DAMN it looks pretty. And I'm with you on throwing whales on PETA. Have you heard of a programme called "Penn and Teller's 'Bullshit!'" over here? They did an episode on PETA specifically, and I've it on my hard drive if you're interested on their particular take.
Hmm... come to think of it, how do you say (and for that matter, pronounce) "Fuck you, PETA" in Norwegian?

Date: 2007-03-22 11:03 pm (UTC)I'm getting quite excited about S3 too. I've been listening again to the DW audiobooks you gave me during my commute to uni. Just to get myself in gear. Mmmm, Tennant (and his lovely accent)is as droolworthy as ever.
Martha does look
drop-dead gorgeouspromising too but I'm spoiler-free (except for the snog bit, that was quite inescapable, even for clueless!me)so I really have no expectations. But maybe that's a god thing? I was never going to be of the 'pining-for-Rose' lot anyway, I'm fickle that way.no subject
Date: 2007-03-22 11:23 pm (UTC)Completely off-topic, but am I the only person who gets a little creeped out by the opening of the trailer that has the half Doctor/half Martha's face? Don't know why but it skeeves me out (and for the record probably would no matter which companion it was)...

Date: 2007-03-22 11:47 pm (UTC)Freema seems terribly charming and lovely. I like the fact she seems so genuinely excited over being on the show and that goes a long way towards endearing Martha to me, though I've only seen a few seconds of the character in action.
I am bracing myself for much panty-bunching and histrionics in the fandom, however. I think your prediction is correct. A Storm Is Coming.

Date: 2007-03-23 12:17 pm (UTC)It's incredibly funny, because they have a no-nonsense approach to things they have on their shows. They rip some subjects to pieces, like PETA and public safety and say "this is what's wrong with this particular thing"
^_^ Much appreciated... I'll probably be yelling that regarding idiots at work today.
