In accomplishments of the weekend:
- Got new flat computer screen which is shiny like whoa. Next up: New harddrive in a few weeks. Huzzah.
- Finished fic for [livejournal.com profile] geekfiction's 'I love 80s' ficathon in good time before the 15th. Huzzah.
- Finished first section of AU!Rose/AU!John Smith fic which was giving me troubles. Huzzah.
- World of Warcraft news: Smacked Magtherion the supremely annoying boss inna face and got my gnome warlock to level 40. Huzzah.
- Cleaned windows and so won't have to do again for a while. Huzzah.
- Bought first Christmas presents and felt Organised. Huzzah.

In fandom notes:
- Bracing myself for Thursday and CSI episode. Fandom's going to go minor boom either way, innit? And I'm gonna need snog icon, ys.
- Funny how A who hates B still finds it totally fine to nick all of B's ideas? Or perhaps that's why B nicks all the ideas and doesn't credit. Hmmm. Fandom confuses me sometimes with its wankery.
- THIS WANK NEVER DIES RUUUUN
- *blinkblink*
- What you ship doesn't make you automatically superior to someone who ships something else. No, really.

In other news:
- Cat might be sick. Me be worried.
- Body of second Norwegian soldier dead in Afghanistan brought home. Debate on our involvement there continues. Am I the only one thinking while we're all watching Iraq fall apart, Afghanistan is going to buggeroo in the background?
- Oh bite me, Carl I Hagen. I stab thee with a blunt toothpick.
Football is serious business.

What's up in your world?

Am I the only one thinking while we're all watching Iraq fall apart, Afghanistan is going to buggeroo in the background?

No, you're not. There are quite a few of us who think that within another 5 years or so Afghanistan is going to be back to where it was pre-September 11th, 2001.

I'm curious about the missing link in the "shipping/superiority" item, although I probably don't want to know...

Five years? The Taliban has already taken back over because most of our soldiers have been sent to Iraq.

I was under the impression that Afghanistan was doing better? I saw a documentary about it although I'm pretty sure the documentary was quite outdated by the time I saw it and it was awhile ago to.

The whole middle east situation is just so wrong on so many levels. And it is like Afghanistan is totally forgotten news wise, despite the fact that the US HAD to go there first.

Bush just makes me want to commit atrocities. I watched him speak last week while I was out running errands and stopped in at a place. The whole leaning just drives me crazy. Not to even mention him smiling while he talks about the economy. Um, thanks guy, it's made all the better by your shit eating grin delivering bad news.

Am seriously considering immigrating to another country.

And political stuff starting so early for elections next year makes me twitch. I hold out little hope for anything exciting to really happen.

*Sends good thoughts for your kitty* That's no fun. A year or so ago, our vet told me that Puzzle might have a congenital heart condition which could lead to premature death. Thankfully, on her next checkup it was downgraded to a heart murmur, which is much less serious (I was born with one).

And Afghanistan... yeah. Thing is, it was always going to. In barges Bush and co and (sort of) pushes out the Taliban - who they put there in the first place! - and the regime they allow to take over is no better. Just as oppressive, particularly towards women. And then Bush's attention switches (ADHD, anyone?) and it's off the radar apart from people who make a point of paying attention. As for Iraq... I still get clients who've come to Canada to flee Iraq, even post-Saddam Hussein. Not just Kurds, too. The whole situation stinks, and Bush is only the top of my list of blame.

I knew what the football link was about before clicking
.*sigh*

I don't know what to say. I'm inclined to believe the tragic accident theory, but after the shit that went down during the G8 here in Genova in 200 I also know that our police can sometimes be worse than the thugs they are supposed to keep at bay -- How this all connects to football, well, frankly it escapes me. Probably because it doesn't.

I don't think our football supporters are more violent than most, because the fringes (we have to keep in mind these are a minority in this country where everybody and their mother loves football) that are at the heart of all the riots and troubles often are people who go to the stadium just to have an excuse to unleash their anger on other human beings. It's no longer about football. How members of a so-called civil society can stoop that low is another mystery. There must be deep socio-economical reasons, but sadly I don't think our society nor our politicians are ready or even willing to investigate them. *double sigh*

Sorry for the pessimistic outburst. I don't seem to be able to restrain myself.

As for my life, nothing much is going on but somehow I get to feel all satisfied anyway.

I'm sending loads of good vibes to Ishmael. Please keep us posted.*hugs*

Thursday will cause a fandom implosion.

wtf are they talking about with hair?
They can say "Be lighter", but why is it considered "healthy" to be darker?
Why are people so concerned about the colour of skin and texture of hair when it doesn't matter, anyway? I mean, honestly. If someone told my sister or brother that they had to be "lighter", I'm pretty sure that they'd laugh.
And the hair issue:
"Black hair" as they were saying is hard to manage. It doesn't like to be combed out, and it takes irons and product to make it lay manageable. I know. I've sat for three hours combing out my sister's hair and still gotten nowhere and had to sit for another two to get it it combed out.
I'm sorry, but "very important note" fails on so many levels of ignorance.

< /rant >

(btw: not being "busty" enough is not an issue. they want skinny with no boobs. unless you're going for lingerie.)

Yay gnomes.

-hugs- to your kitten. I hope it's nothing serious.
The poor darling.

My world?
Sick.
My brother came home a while ago. My sister was ecstatic.

Bracing myself is an understatement. The fandom is going to implode... in a big way. And than... life will go on. lol

I hope that your cat feels better soon!

In some parts of the country, it certainly doesn't look like there's been much impact. Oh, I don't know. All the options depress me :(

Some parts have had improvements, oh yeah. Particulary in the North, I think. But in other parts, it remains quite volataile and impoverished.

There be much fucked-upness in the world :( I do worry seriously about this forgetting about Afghanistan - that's what happened last time. Not that Iraq isn't a serious issue and Iran and Israel vs Palestine and ARGH, but... Afghanistan should not be forgotten.

If I had to see Bush on a daily basis, I would probably get quite enraged myself.

Yeah, I hope he's just feeling under the weather a bit and it's not serious. I had to put down my last cat and it was heartbreaking :( Hope your kitty stays all right too.

Yeah, the regime in Afghanistan now is... Not satisfactory. I mean, the Afghan police is facing serious charges of constant torture. That's just not a healthy sign. It's like Pakistan. Musharref is maybe marginally better than some of the options, but man, ideal he is not. Just because someone is the enemy of one of your enemies, he is NOT automatically your friend.

Saddam was a right bastard I won't grieve, but like with Tito before him - when the tyrant goes away, it often falls apart. Which kinda depresses me a lot. The options should be better than tyrant or chaos.

It's like hooligans in England, innit? It's not really about football - football is just the excuse. I rather agree with you there must be some socio-economical at work here, possibly coupled with other issues. And it sounds like you have some of Northern ireland's past problem - the police didn't solve the problems, they were part of them.

If it goes on, sooner or later you'll have to confront the issues though - if for no other reason than that otherwise, FIFA might ban you from internationals. And in your football-loving country, that's a serious threat.

Good to be moderately pleased with life sometimes too, innit? Just very highs and very lows can be exausting.

Actually, I can see a point about the subtler ways racism can unfold. Remarks about their physical "characteristsics" is often included in anti-semetic sentiments. I feel a bit unfamiliar with American cultural context to make a judgement on that particular link - and the debate rather derailed too, I think. But that unconscious racism sometimes come to light in subtler ways? Oh hell yeah.

Sickness sucks :(

I understand that racism can be brought about in very subtle ways, and I agree. What I don't understand is why there is this misconception that most of society is telling people with darker skin to lighten up.
In my experience, I've only ever been told to be darker.
I don't know. I suppose a lot of it is how you look at it and how you interpret the idea that society is telling us all to be one skin colour.

I'm a lot better now.

How's your kitten? I hope he's doing better, dear.
