I got hit by flu, which just adds to the suck of this week. We can but hope I'm using it all up at once. Then of course
crimedoc1 tags me for the 'happiness meme' where I have to post once a day something that makes me happy for eight days. I admit I was at first more inclined to just rant about shit, but maybe that's just when thinking of good things, even if minor ones, is good. So. However, since I am somewhat bed-bound and knocked out, I'm just going to do eight things today. Yes, I cheat.
Eight things I am happy about, in no particular order...
1. The Battlestar Galactica hiatus is over. I love this show and I have wanted to see the end episodes for so long I can't believe they're here at last. Pinch me. And have tissues on the ready for me. Eeep.
2. It snowed today.
3. Grissom's exit from CSI ended with this. I am a sap sometimes and every now and then, a somewhat uplifting ending is nice. I was once very much in fandom for CSI, writing fics and all, and it's starting to feel all nostalgic now. Thanks, CSI. I had fun times in your fandom. Must get nostalgic icon of last scene there, yes.
4. Someone nominated me for favourite mod in those Children of Time awards. I haven't really watched them much, as some of the rules and setup rubbed me the wrong way, but I appreciate the thought a good deal. Modding is a bit of bitch of a job at times, and usually gives more grief than anything, so... Thank you, whoever you were.
5. I have half-finished a Doctor Who fic and I haven't hated writing it so far. I actually enjoyed scribbling on it. Sometimes a little distance makes for fonder feelings, I think. At least for me.
6. You lot. There are always posts up I enjoy reading, things that make me smile, opinions that make me think, silliness that makes me laugh. I am totally crap at saying so, but I like people. I like you. You are made of awesome.
7. Bush is president only for a few more days.
8. I still have four new books to read left from Christmas, currently making my way through 'Measuring the World'. Mmm. Books.
I shan't tag any, but consider (and maybe post) at least one thing that makes you happy, yeah?
In other stuff:
- Gee, one wonders why such an ad as this hasn't attracted willing tenants. Be sure to read to the end, it is very special indeed. Would you live there?
- A very interesting post on writing, culture and Euro-centric views. You might not agree with all, but it - and the comments and debates it sparked - certainly made me think quite a bit.
- If you remember the parents who named their kids Adolf Hitler and Aryan Nation, the latest is that the state has taken custody of the children. According to other newssources, it's not the names that's the cause. Racist delusional fucknuts would make bad parents, who knew? (As a note, DO NOT READ THE COMMENTS TO THAT STORY. I do and I hated humanity for a good hour. Neo-Nazis and racist idiots are all over it and even dragging Norway into it. Ew.)
- Pilot manages to land plane safely in the Hudson river after birds caused engine failure. All 155 on board survive. Go pilot!
- Official confirms torture at Guantanamo. And given how very close to that line the US was already skating (and in my opinion had crossed) this shocks me not one bit.

Date: 2009-01-16 09:46 am (UTC)I am rather leaning towards troll myself, though the friend that gave me the link claims people like that are real in the US: I think I am vaguely scared.

Date: 2009-01-16 09:54 am (UTC)Oh, and thanks, Landlord, for giving non-Christians yet another reason to think Christians are crazy, mean and stupid. I appreciate getting lumped in with people like you.

HOLY FUCK WHAT? NO REALLY. WHAT?
I don't think gulags were as strict.
(Edited to say that I'm sorry you're sick and I hope you get better soon. Lounging about in bed reading sounds like the perfect thing to do.)

Date: 2009-01-16 10:31 am (UTC)Well, was 42 degrees here today, and some bastard decided it would be fun to set fire to Kings Park.
But for some pretty cool news, the first Australian Victoria Cross awarded for 39 years goes to Trooper Mark Donaldson (*is all patriotic*)
Also, how's this for "dead of cute"?

Date: 2009-01-16 10:49 am (UTC)This craigslist ad is the most lol thing I've seen.
the crazy Christian ad is for an apartment in Vancouver, maybe I should apply. the best part of it is that it's at broadway and commercial where all this city's druggies and hippies live and every second house is a marijuana grow op.

Date: 2009-01-16 11:54 am (UTC)The for rent ad is so outrageous I have a hard time believing it's for real. That's not an apartment, it's someone trying to make money off their jailer fantasies.

Date: 2009-01-16 12:17 pm (UTC)And jeez, arsonists again? I remember those big fires in Australia that were set. Some people just must be assholes, huh?

Date: 2009-01-16 12:23 pm (UTC)That BSG ad makes me want to smack someone with capital letters and punctuation.
I would dearly like to see what said guy would say to your application. That would be a hoot. Possibly he has actually gone batshit in reaction to his neighbours, or he wants to 'save' them.
Sounds a bit like Amsterdam, really. I was there and so many houses were growing stuff it was a bit distracting for a while.

Date: 2009-01-16 12:27 pm (UTC)Yeah, I suspected troll, but I've been wrong on such things before. Never discount crazy. Either way, funny read.

Date: 2009-01-16 05:18 pm (UTC)CSI: ZOMG TEARS.
And that pilot...jeez people. Yeah, the plane didn't crash and burn, but he did what he was trained to do. Every pilot out there is taught emergency landing scenarios, and while a water landing is not preferable, it's better than trying to land in Central Park or in Times Square! I'll save the rant, though.

Date: 2009-01-16 05:41 pm (UTC)Glad the doofus-in-chief is leaving soon, but right now our state's top doofus is pissing people off royally. Mostly because he wants to halve the budget for higher education and reduce take-home pay for teachers and state workers by about 13% - since he's damned sure gonna keep his idiotic promise of never ever raising taxes.
And the story with the pilot gets even more compelling when you realize he is an ex-Air Force pilot, runs a safety consulting firm on the side, is studying psychology with respect to aircrew crisis management, and is a certified glider pilot (which was useful with the plane essentially behaving like a gigantic glider). I would lay good money that when they run this through the simulator less that 10% of pilots could replicate that landing.

Date: 2009-01-16 09:39 pm (UTC)Yeah, the pilot of the plane is being lauded as a hero here in New York for the quick thinking of "Hey, water! I'll aim for that!"
And I'm making fudge and nachos and homemade pizza for the 20th. WHOO-HOO!!!
Also, I wish that they'd hurry up and release 3.1.. I want my dual-spec!

And thank you for making me smile with that snippet from CSI. That was incredibly heartwarming.
