Sadly, I think that's because there is so much sexist crap flung at female characters that defenders of them get quite hostile. Hostility breeds hostility and suddenly, there isn't much middle-ground to be had.
As I said, I do think there are legitimate reasons to dislike a female character. It's when it becomes a pattern, I start to think "hmm".
