From what I understand, the watermelon thing was more common before, with older generations. There is a post with some links about it here.
The US is a very large culture, so I suppose there might be some cultural expressions that don't travel all the way, as it were. It's hard for me to judge that, because Norway is small and has given me a different framework, if that makes sense.
And yes, I do agree that what you do when informed is really the key. That goes for a lot of things - we all make mistakes unaware sometimes, but how you deal with having caused hurt can really say a lot about your character.
