Sometimes, I really am too nice...
Apr. 3rd, 2004 03:34 amSome of you who hang at the PPC board might remember this chick... Basically, this young author at ff.net published a Buffy/LotR crossover wherein Willow goes to Middle-earth, joins the Fellowship and woos Legolas. Said story was not very good. Among other things, it spawned ten new mini-Balrogs. Ten, people. Ten new ones. So anyway, I leave a review - fairly frank, but pretty polite and offering a few good resources she might want to look at to improve her writing. The chick then pulls the story, as she'd gotten quite a few not-so-good reviews. Fair enough. She then e-mails me to thank me for my review and blah, blah, one thing leads to another and now I'm her beta.
Yeah...
But I was remembering how horrid I was at 15 and how I once went all snotty on someone who tried to help me with a story when I was young and fresh and stupid. And she does seem eager to get help, even when I outlined all the horrors of having me as a beta. I just hope this won't be another MIL-fiasco. *slaps self for that* Oh well. We'll see, I guess. Cross your fingers for me.
And she did already make my day by asking me what race Norway was. I was so tempted to answer 'Skius Philautos', but she probably wouldn't have gotten that one (philautos is a Greek term meaning lover of self, so basically I just called Norwegians 'skiing self-lovers' which we rather are at times). But the thought amused me anyway. What race are Norway? There must be some fun faux-Latin phrase we can call ourselves... *ponders*
Oh, and bro is visiting. Say hi to my brother everyone.
Yeah...

Ah, how I can relate to that. For me, the time I was young and moronic was just last year... I did a few stupid, stupid things I regret completely and deserve to be slapped repeatedly for. *sigh* Live and learn, I guess.

Date: 2004-04-02 06:50 pm (UTC)Tell her that Norwegians are "callipygian". Means "having beautful buttocks". Or you could say, "Well, people think of us as [big fancy word that means blonde], but that's really just a stereotype." Unfortunately, I cannot remember any big words meaning blonde at the moment.

So now you're her beta. *sigh* Good luck. Sounds like fun... I don't have a beta yet, and am young and inexperienced. *sighs again* I feel too young. I'm the youngest person on the PPC Board! Yep. My life. PPC. That's about it. And hi again Cam's bro!

Date: 2004-04-03 07:21 am (UTC)Good job on betaing a newbie, I know how useful it is to have another persons comments to help with your writing, especially if you are insecure about it. I know that having my beta look over my work makes me feel better. So good for you for making someones life better ^_^

Date: 2004-04-03 09:34 am (UTC)Hee. I do hope that you manage to wean the girl away from her Sueish ways. She seems rather amenable to this, and after all, she was the one who made the initial overture.
The what race are Norway part was funny. Maybe she was thinking in terms of Middle-Earth races? Lol.
*waves* Hi Cam's brother...
Date: 2004-04-03 12:34 pm (UTC)So yeah... In the (slightly twisted) words of Blackadder
Hardly a 'cunning plan'...
And damn... I wanted to MST that story...

Date: 2004-04-03 04:01 pm (UTC)Boy, am I glad I read a lot of *good* fanfiction before I started to write... and I also read OFUM first...
I know now that Constructive Criticism is good, and that betas are my friends. :D So, hopefully, I will not have any problems with creating Minis and being dropped into OFUM. (But then again, I want to go to OFUM... would help my Tolkien knowledge)
I wish you much luck with this person. Sounds like you'll need it. But then, at least she wasn't snotty about your review. That's probably a good sign... *says the little n00bie who knows very little*
Hmmm.. just ran a spell-check on this, and it says OFUM is not a word. It doesn't like fanfiction, either. What was I saying about spell-checkers earlier?
