Hug a Tiger
Mar. 7th, 2005 01:11 pmFanfic Author Appreciation Week
March 6 through March 13
Post to your LJ each day at least one of your favorite fanfic authors and why you love them, their work, and why they need more appreciation.
I've decided to kick off with Lord of the Rings and one of the more prolific authors there, who still deserve more love than she gets.
Thundera Tiger
Beyond This World - it's a Gimli/Legolas friendship story set in Valinor concerning Gimli's passing and Legolas's grief. It is the first story of hers I read and as a fellow lover of the Gimli/Legolas friendship, I fell in love with it, even the sentimental ending.
She also writes a great Thranduil as seen here, dealing with his various roles and relationship to Legolas. I have to say she is one of my favourite Legolas authors, especially given how horridly written he tends to be written in a lot of stories by more 'OMG!Orlando!' minded authors. It's a lovely antidote.
Another aspect of Thundera that I love in her as an author is taking a look at the more political side of Tolkien's world as well as culture conflicts. It's not all about the hawt!Elves and her version of Middle-earth is a complex and complicated place. She even makes me read Aragorn, who normally is not an interesting character for me.
Fear No Darkness is such a complex read, and while still a WIP, it is worth a look. Thundera puts a lot of thought into her work and her interpretations are always interesting, even if I don't agree.
She's also a very gracious lady and not a pile of ego, which in my opinion is never appreciated enough. ;)

You're kidding, right? Wow. That's...wow. Thank you. I'm trying to think of something else to say, but I'm drawing a huge blank.
Okay, I seem to remember an LJ post of yours a while back that said something about being uncomfortable with glowing praise, but I have to retaliate. I hope you realize that I consider you one of the best Legolas and Gimli authors. Heck, I consider you to be one of the best authors out there period! You have an ability to look at the world from a myriad of different angles and to draw that out of the characters. But it's never overwhelming or flowery. It's a perfect balance of characterization, story telling, and commentary. So to see this compliment from you...let's just say I won't be getting my ego back for a while. I think it's gone into a geostationary orbit. (At least I'll be able to find it...)
Anyway, thank you. This has really made my day, as sappy and over-the-top as that might sound. Here's hoping my head will still fit through doorways!

Oooo... *whips out star charts and begins calculating* So if you take the square root and carry the two, you get... Hey. If we do this a few more times and take into consideration the sun's gravity, we could carve a face! I'm thinking Sun Tsu, just to be strange.

Date: 2005-03-07 11:03 pm (UTC)I saw where ladyiapetus had mentioned seeing this meme on your LJ, and I'm very happy to see something like this. With all of the bad fic, flamers and trolls out there, it's nice to see some of the good authors getting the recognition they so richly deserve.
