Well, his various remarks about the Swedish Royal family has made The King of Sweden call in the lawyers.

And how does Phelps respond, you ask? Phelps is coming to Sweden

"We'll hunt down your king," he said ominously to Expressen. "It doesn't make any difference where he tries to hide."

The minister and twenty members of his congregation from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, are planning to come to Sweden at the beginning of September. They are bringing plenty of placards in order to spread their message that Sweden is the cradle of all evil and that the king rules a nation of sodomites.

Sweden, you have my deepest, deepest sympathy. I feel a dark, deep shudder just knowing that hate-spewer is going to be on the same continet as me, let alone the the neighbouring country. Shudder. Am also very tempted to go to Sweden and tell him to sod off and be gay for a day in his honour. Asshat.

Though I wonder if he's aware Swedish laws differ from American laws when it comes to freedom of speech... Maybe he'll actually get himself arrested while there. Or maybe Odin will smite him in rightful fury.

I live in hope.

I seem to remember Phelps pulling the same stunt/threat about coming to Canada a few years back, but he never followed through on his threat. I just remember the huge debates in our newspaper editorials about free speech & hate speech and all that. I think in the end, they decided he could come over the border if he wanted to, but he never did.

Phelps is going to be out of the country for a while? Goodie! I mean, bad for Sweden, but nice for Kansas. I think he'll find he's distinctly unwelcome in Scandinavia. He's not too welcome here. Here's hoping a trout drops from the sky onto his head, giving him a concussion and amnesia. Then he gets nabbed by some Swedish drag queens, and the rest is tabloid history.

I remember when he was supposed to come to my university and protest us (like I let anyone forget :P)... he wasn't allowed to come onto campus, so he was going to picket and yell at us from across the street. His followers came and did some of that, but he didn't. Coward. Not that we really missed his "pure" presence, but still, what a moron.

*shaking her head* That man and his so called "church" makes me feel incredibly ill. I find it repulsive that he disrespects the Swedish royal family; hell, I know a bunch of people who are similarly disgusted. Fred Phelps and his followers degrade too many people; about two months ago some of his churchgoers showed up at the funeral of a solider in Marblehead (it's a relatively small town about twenty to thirty minutes north of Boston), and shouted all about soldiers dying because "God hated fags" and blahblahblah. It was incredibly insulting to both the solider and the entire town.

I'm all for freedom of speech, but there are times when I really think there should be at least some restrictions to it in America. Such utter disrespect for the dead and foreign powers (who in Hell is actually stupid enough to call the Swedish royal children "slutty and gay?") is intolerable, I believe.

Here's hoping Odin does do some righteous smiting, and I wish the Swedish lawyers good hunting.

I was looking through the links in the linked posts and read some of why he focuses on gay, I find this amusing:
First, Paul the Apostle, sometimes called the Lion of Christ, who spoke as he was moved by the Holy Spirit, gave the sin of homosexuality special attention.

Is it bad that I just read all this and basically laughed my bum off? I mean, Fred Phelps, of all people. He's ridiculous, and I feel like the King of Sweden is taking him too seriously. The only way to shut assholes like him up is to ignore him. I think he lives for attention and is relishing every moment of this right now, since it's obviously going to gain huge publicity, if it already hasn't.

Over here in New Zealand we've actually got our own 'Fred Phelps' by the name of (I think) Brian Tamaki, who heads the 'Destiny Church'.

Well, I've never been more ashamed to be American. What a bloody git! I just read the articles you posted, and I am aghast. My blood has not boiled this hot in a long time, nor has my jaw stretched so wide in outrage. I have friends in Sweden, and they are all decent, polite, kind people.

Though Swedish prisons aren't really bad at all, I've heard. So maybe he can somehow get taken to Turkish prisons instead...I've heard they're bad.

I was looking at those pages, and I saw this link. I feel so sorry for England, too, especially all those whose relatives died in those bombings. Clicking a couple more links, I saw that they keep track of how long they think someone has been in hell. And they're using the deaths of children as an excuse to preach the gospel, when they rejoice at the deaths of children all over the world. It makes me SO STINKIN' MAD!

Phelps and his people are always protesting somewhere in Topeka. The best thing to do is just ignore them. Paying attention only encourages them (that's probably the reason he goes so far to harass people now, nobody nearby takes him seriously).
