So basically...

- The US Supreme Court needs two seats a-filling (US Chief Justice Rehnquist died) and there'll be huge debates about the choices and not choices and probably some very not-happy people at the end of it.

- Hurricane Katrina has done some horrific damage and people'll look for someone to blame and others to defend and there'll probably be some very not-happy people at the end of it.

- Racial issues have been raised by Katrina, due to New Orleans large African American population which means they were hit hard. People will probably argue about race being a reason for slow respone till the cow come home and there'll probably be some very not-happy people along the whole ride.

- The Iraq war is still ongoing and things are looking grim. Supporters and protesters of the war will probably continue to be very not-happy about each other.

All this adds up to "Oh, bollocks."

My offer of a couch in Norway stands, for those who desire it.

Meanwhile, China evacuates over 700,000 from the path of a typhoon

I would still prefer that lusciously colored cabin you showed a while ago on one of that pretty photos from Finnmark... since I was told (after asking some questions) that people in New Orleans shouldn't seek for federal support but "grow up and help themselves" (in other words: Shut up, you foreign-believer-in-false-propaganda.. *sigh*

A drink sounds good... and a massive quantity of chocolate and other legal depression-crushing sweet-tasting substances.

A super ray gun that would shoot some sense into the portions of the human population that need it would be nice, too.

I'm little, I do dishes, and I pick up languages damned easily. I don't even need a couch, just a cupboard under the stairs... ;-)

I dont suppose you've heard of the comparisons between Cuba's evacuation response plan and America's.

Some damn interesting comparisons there between financial capital and social capital. Got me thinking, at least.

You're not the only one who needs a drink about the fiasco that is my nation's response to anything. I'll just take a spot on the floor for a while, if that's okay. I'm good at cleaning. *nods*

Just when I think I couldn't get any more ashamed of my country...

I want to see everyone responsible for this face their karma. NOW.

Preferably televised for everyone's enjoyment.

I can't believe how badly this appears to have been handled. Some of the tsunami recue effort was better organised and that one didn't have several days' prior warning.

It is so, so much worse even that than. See my post yesterday about aid from Chicago being REFUSED, and how widespread this is.

A British blogger re-did Clarke's Law for this: "Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice."

They're mass murderers and the whole world is watching in horror. We already knew that, but they are killing their own people in the cruelest ways possible. I never want to hear about Saddam Hussein "gassing his own people" as a justification for war again -- at least gas is quicker!

If I could get out there, didn't have school, and didn't have a cat (unless you really adore 25 pound cats who enjoy shedding) I'd be out there asap. I do dishes. I can cook-ish. And clean. Good at that. And I can sleep in closets or on the floor. I don't mind.

But really, it's really upsetting to have all of the news cameras there and the news people not helping anyone. You don't see the news helicopters going down and, you know, getting people out of there. It's disgusting how there are racial issues. SAME COLOUR BLOOD! We all smell the same when we're rotting. It doesn't matter the colour of our skin. (And that's coming from a little white girl who spent six years in the south.)

I just don't get why everyone is stupid over this. Tsunami in Asia? We got there quickly. After having what? A week to prepare? And we're not down there doing our damnedest to get everyone out of there safely. Makes me NOT very happy with my country.

Well as a teaser, cuba's plans rocks. Neighbourhoods evacuate together. Any doctors in the neighbourhood know their potential patients requirements, pharmaceuticals and dosages. Annual drills. People take their tv's and microwaves to reduce looting, theres even a system in place for their pets.

In a very poor country, they work together very socially to achieve a solid result. Social capital....

Actually, Dateline went down there and managed to flag down a roaming crew of EMT's in an ambulance and they loaded up the tired, bleeding, sore group that the Dateline news crew was talking to.

Ah. Am not that surprised. Unlike a lot of Americans, I don't think of socialism as a thing of Satan. Hell, my own country is a social democracy. Yay for some socialist ideas.

That's appalling. Bad enough that they're hem-hahing over foreign aid, but from their own countrymen? Eh, WTF? What is this, the anti-tsumani? The tsunami did a lot of horrific damage, but it did actually manage to get the warring parties in the Ache province to pull together. Now they have signed a peace deal.

So why do I feel like this hurricane is dividing the US even further? What the fuck is going on?
