So basically...
- The US Supreme Court needs two seats a-filling (US Chief Justice Rehnquist died) and there'll be huge debates about the choices and not choices and probably some very not-happy people at the end of it.
- Hurricane Katrina has done some horrific damage and people'll look for someone to blame and others to defend and there'll probably be some very not-happy people at the end of it.
- Racial issues have been raised by Katrina, due to New Orleans large African American population which means they were hit hard. People will probably argue about race being a reason for slow respone till the cow come home and there'll probably be some very not-happy people along the whole ride.
- The Iraq war is still ongoing and things are looking grim. Supporters and protesters of the war will probably continue to be very not-happy about each other.
All this adds up to "Oh, bollocks."
My offer of a couch in Norway stands, for those who desire it.
Meanwhile, China evacuates over 700,000 from the path of a typhoon
In other Katrina-dominated news:
Katrina survivors are airlifted out and tell tales of rape and murder
Rescue works battle chaos and confusion
World offers help
Sense of shame in the US
Awkward questions raised
How you can help
School bus comandeered by renegade refugees first to arrive at Astrodome in Houston

Date: 2005-09-04 12:02 pm (UTC)I can't believe how badly this appears to have been handled. Some of the tsunami recue effort was better organised and that one didn't have several days' prior warning.

Date: 2005-09-04 12:28 pm (UTC)A British blogger re-did Clarke's Law for this: "Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice."
They're mass murderers and the whole world is watching in horror. We already knew that, but they are killing their own people in the cruelest ways possible. I never want to hear about Saddam Hussein "gassing his own people" as a justification for war again -- at least gas is quicker!

Date: 2005-09-06 04:02 am (UTC)That's appalling. Bad enough that they're hem-hahing over foreign aid, but from their own countrymen? Eh, WTF? What is this, the anti-tsumani? The tsunami did a lot of horrific damage, but it did actually manage to get the warring parties in the Ache province to pull together. Now they have signed a peace deal.
So why do I feel like this hurricane is dividing the US even further? What the fuck is going on?

Date: 2005-09-04 02:38 pm (UTC)But really, it's really upsetting to have all of the news cameras there and the news people not helping anyone. You don't see the news helicopters going down and, you know, getting people out of there. It's disgusting how there are racial issues. SAME COLOUR BLOOD! We all smell the same when we're rotting. It doesn't matter the colour of our skin. (And that's coming from a little white girl who spent six years in the south.)
I just don't get why everyone is stupid over this. Tsunami in Asia? We got there quickly. After having what? A week to prepare? And we're not down there doing our damnedest to get everyone out of there safely. Makes me NOT very happy with my country.

Date: 2005-09-05 02:38 am (UTC)Actually, Dateline went down there and managed to flag down a roaming crew of EMT's in an ambulance and they loaded up the tired, bleeding, sore group that the Dateline news crew was talking to.
