A Chat

.... wherein Anais and Cam chat about concrit, the inability to take it, badfic, the desire to leave concrit for just those sort of fics, CSI fandom, the reason for not eating cheese and a possible future for the brain of the stupid. Also reveals Cam's desire to be blue font when leaving concrit and Anais' to be red.

Freud is still out on what this indicates.

Names have not been included to spare those who don't want to know they're considered badfic writers by some. Or maybe Cam is just not in the mood for tantrums

[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil The lack of honest and respectable criticism is just as bad as backstabbing and such.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam I know. It makes me doubt the feedback I do get
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil It's sort of tricky, isn't it? I only feedback if I've truly been astounded by a piece.
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil And I hope I come across as sincere and not just an asskisser.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam yeah. It is of course easier when you know people

[livejournal.com profile] misscam The key to taking critisism is to not listen to your first urge, which is usually one of "but.... my baby!"

[livejournal.com profile] misscam I'm gonna have to pick apart one of her stories just to vent now. for my own sake
[livejournal.com profile] misscam and all the comments can be in different colours and look shiny
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil Do you want a partner in crime?
[livejournal.com profile] misscam sure. I want to be blue
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil I'll be red. Cause I'm evil.

[livejournal.com profile] misscam It'll probably just be for myself - though I fantasize about e-mailing it with "you said you love concrit - love away"

[livejournal.com profile] misscam you're like the worse demons of my non-conscience

[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil And I can be brutal when I'm editing.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam if it stinks, I have no doubt you could be. You're like me
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil I take that as the highest compliment.
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil I suffer fools very badly.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam if the author is young, I tend to be a bit nicer, since heavens know I was crap then myself
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil Oh, of course.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam and if they show inclination to listen, I am a very nice mummy bear
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil And when they can't stop whinging over a piece of brutally honest concrit weeks after the fact, well, then, I say the gloves are off.

[livejournal.com profile] misscam I am quite the bitch when I want to be. Fear my Viking blue font of concrit.
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil Ohmigod. Miss Cam. She's not to be trifled with.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam You're not so bad yourself, Opinionated Spirit with Red Font of French Flames
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil I'm a badass.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam certified
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil As are you.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam *wriggles behind* I wish the stamp came off in the wash, though

[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil People should be able to stand up and say "this doesn't make any sense, this is ludicrous, this is arbitrary or mean or silly" without being seen as traitors.
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil I think the desire to be liked and accepted has kept some people quiet.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam oh, most assuredly. You're nice to me, I'm nice to you. Mutual pat on the back club
[livejournal.com profile] misscam and thus soon the pat means nada

[livejournal.com profile] misscam There are days I miss the LotR fandom - at least there was a fairly large group who didn't play those sort of games. Sometimes a little elitism is nice
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil Isn't that horrible to say? Especially when it's so very true.

[livejournal.com profile] misscam sometimes, I wish people would just be honest about these things
[livejournal.com profile] misscam "I hate any and all critisism! Give me love or give me nothing!"
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil You made me laugh so much with that.
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil Like you said - be honest. What the person said hurt my feelings and I don't like to listen to people when they hurt my feelings. Alas, all concrit is hurtful and, thus, I don't like, accept or recognise it.

[livejournal.com profile] misscam sadly, fanfic is a way to get attention
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil In most fandoms, it's the only way to get recognised.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam shame, really. Maybe there would be less crapfic if it wasn't
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil That would be a nice fringe benefit.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam yes. I am grateful that fanfic get attention, don't get me wrong. I've met some wonderful people through it. But it does mean almost everyone tries to write

[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil My experience with CSI is weird. In that fanfiction seems to be the only way to get noticed. In TWW and Buffy fandoms, it was certainly a major way, but readers of text also got acknowledged.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam more... text-based shows, perhaps
[livejournal.com profile] misscam LotR is more like those again
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil Right. That's probably true.
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil Though, with Buffy, practically anyone who wasn't a nimrod and who posted semi-intelligibly on the official board, was recognisable to some degree.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam more to interpret means more opening for speculation... and people who are good at crafting theories
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil Yes.
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil Whereas in CSI, the very lack of continuity makes it impossible to craft theories in any kind of text-based way.

[livejournal.com profile] misscam you're a snob
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil I am indeed.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam so am I, but a Nordic one
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil It's one of the ways you can tell I'm part French.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam how stereotypical of you
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil I know.
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil But I don't eat cheese just to make up for it.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam how shocking

[livejournal.com profile] misscam stupdity should amuse. The alternative is despair
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil Oh, that is so very true. And so very sad.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam truly. What the point of a brain if you ain't using it?
[livejournal.com profile] briasoleil It's not there just to look pretty.
[livejournal.com profile] misscam maybe the stupid will evolve away from the brain, since they never use it anyway

The object of the game is to stump the person writing the journal. I've been writing in my live journal since 2002 or so, and can't possibly remember all the topics I've talked about in that time. Your job, if you choose to accept it, is to go into the archives of my journal and pull out a random quote, only from public posts, and then my job will be to see if I can remember what I was talking about.

I promise not to cheat, but you will have to just trust me on that.

You tell me if I'm remotely right or wrong. Please don't pick a quote that's so random that it could apply to anything, like "feh" or "Damn it!" or something equally general. Pick something that might actually be about something.

Quote: All right, regular readers of this LJ knows of the Insulted Swede, aka little miss Pansy.

I do wish I saw more honest, strict, "elitist" concrit out there... if only for the selfish reason that it'd make me feel better about my reviews, because I honestly can't figure out how people manage to do those giggly little reviews where nothing more is said than that the person liked the story/chapter. ^_^;

I'm talking about the Tinhats again, aren't I? Pansy was the chick who set up a sockpuppet man and lied about various things.

I sometimes leave a note that I liked the chapter and do the more serious comments at the end if a large story. BUt yeah, a little something on why they liked is always nice.

I like concrit...I may fight it to my dying breath, but God's honest truth, I like it. I do understand how some might not like it...it does sting and it takes a good solid set of armor made out of thick skin, self-worth, 'to hell with that, I did it the right way for me', and ability to accept that there are better ways of doing something to accept concrit. I used to be a member of a Real Ghostbusters mailinglist that had a rule that at the beginning of a fic post, the author had to state what level of crit they wanted if they had a preference, otherwise all bets were off (for instance, there were people who knew they couldn't take serious concrit, so they had the option of saying "I don't want concrit" or "be very very gentle in your crit" and the rest were nice enough to stick to that. If they liked the story, they said so, if they didn't, they stayed quiet...seemed to work out for a while.)

As for me...I know I'm a hack writer and should probably stick to what I'm good at, but I do understand the desire to tell a story in more concrete terms (since I do write fic anyway), since goodness knows no one looks at fanart and thinks anything intelligent is being said...

From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
That's actually fairly wise. If all abide by those rules, those who don't mind concrit can swim happily and those who may be a bit more unsure can gradually become used to at least some level of it.

Though given how different people are, there are probably those who just will always feel it sting a little too much.

I can't do art, but that doesn't stop me from trying now and then.... if only to confirm that I still can't do it ;)

So the stupid will eventually evolve away the brain... or perhaps it'll just sit there like the appendix.

The best conversation ever!Especially this part:

misscam am quite the bitch when I want to be. Fear my Viking blue font of concrit.
briasoleil Ohmigod. Miss Cam. She's not to be trifled with.

misscam*wriggles behind* I wish the stamp came off in the wash, though

You craked me up!:P

Joking aside, it was a very interesting conversation, though. Made me wnat to change my review policy, that, right now is the following:

"Review every piece of fanfiction you read, trying to be as honest as possible. Think of yourself as the recipent of your concrit."

That's why sometimes I haven't left a review. THe fic was so bad, I was really afraid to hurt the author's feelings...But then again, if I were in their shoes, I'd want to know if I wrote a piecec of crap...

Last but not least, the meme

Those American conservatives who, when you critisise them and show even the slightest tendency not to be a conservative, smiles smugly and goes 'so, you're a communist then?' and pretend it's a joke. Like anyone who is leftish in politics must be a communist. I always want to shut back 'so, you're a fascist then?' I mean, they're to the right, so they gotta be fascists, right?

Chose this quote because it made me laugh as it reminds me of the Lesser Fuckwit...labelling all his opposition as Commnunist is a very annoying habit of his...

Date: 2005-09-12 06:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
That's not a bad policy there. I guess sometimes if you're really afraid you'll hurt the author's feeling, maybe focus on one or two things of concrit. Start of gentle, so to speak, see what kind of impacts it has.

"Worst fic ever!" is not exactly a constructive way to start a concrit... but is sometimes a fair representation of how the reader felt.

Hmmm. I think I'm talking about things that annoys the crap out of me. Older entry too, me thinks.

You guessed right, Cam!(Not bad for someone who claims to have Swiss-cheese memory!;P)

That entry (late December 2003) was hilarious...mainly because I could relate to many of the points you made...

Once I did exactly what you said. Meaning I told someone I had just been introduced to (and who had just made that stupid comment about communists) that he had to be a fascist. Bad move. Telling someone their a Fascist here in Italy is definitely not wise...

...

Amusing, LJ thinks that the word 'google' is wrong and, amongst other words, suggests that I might mean either 'gigolo', 'go ogle' and 'joggle'. Made me laugh, that.
