FBI Joins War on Porn
The new squad will divert eight agents, a supervisor and assorted support staff to gather evidence against "manufacturers and purveyors" of pornography -- not the kind exploiting children, but the kind that depicts, and is marketed to, consenting adults. (...)
But Gonzales endorses the rationale of predecessor Meese: that adult pornography is a threat to families and children. Christian conservatives, long skeptical of Gonzales, greeted the pornography initiative with what the Family Research Council called "a growing sense of confidence in our new attorney general."
Okay then!
Obviously, there are cases of explotation in the porn industry, but this fills me with a sense of foreboding. As an atheist, I'd like religious morals off my sexual preferences, thank you very much. I didn't invite you. It ain't consensual. Sod off.
Course, not really my problem, since I'm very happily Norwegian, but what the US does concerns the world the way the power structure is these days. And I ain't liking the trends of late one bit. War on Sex Ed, War on Porn, War on Evolution... War on What's Not Right According To Us?
No, I don't like it one bit.

Date: 2005-09-28 02:52 pm (UTC)And as long as no one is hurt and it's all consensual - and by FBI's own admittion rarely actually breaking laws - I don't see what the fuck business it is of the FBI. They should have better things to do.

Date: 2005-09-28 03:25 pm (UTC)Oh, please.
Here's a better idea for helping families and children: Fix poverty and education as much as they can be fixed, and quit with the bullshit distractions like "no gay marriage!" or "no porn!"
Oh yeah, and quit setting examples of "What we want is always right, so we'll do what we shouldn't do to get it."

I know where my vote is.

Date: 2005-09-28 04:12 pm (UTC)Actually, it's nice to know that a good chunk of the FBI thinks this is a joke...because really, it is. I'm not all into porn, and I wouldn't shed a tear if it all went up in a poof of smoke, but really. It's not like kids haven't hidden naughty magazines (and lingerie catalogues) under their beds since the dawn of naughty magazines (and lingerie catalogues).
Now if their little task force was going after something, oh, I dunno, illegal, then that's cool. Kinda looks like they might have trouble finding agents willing to take on the task of finding and prosecuting porn that falls clearly under the illegal status, though...

Date: 2005-09-28 04:56 pm (UTC)Obviously, am not very fond of porn that degrades women, but hey, large portions of US media degrades women and I'd so those affect the precious children more.
Mutter, mutter.

Date: 2005-09-28 04:12 pm (UTC)It will be interesting to see whether the FBI can genuinely do anything about porn that is legal. Of course, one possibility is that it'll just look for infractions of other laws -- any other laws -- to harass pornographers with.
The anti-porn people have never been able to come up with a scientifically valid study that shows porn does harm to its users, but that will never stop them from starting their witch hunts. As for exploitation of sex workers, surely the best way to handle this is the way workers in all jobs handle exploitation -- unionizing!
I can't wait to take over the world. When I do it, I'm going to shove my morality and preferences down these bastards' throats the way they have ours for the past millenium. For a start, I'm going to force every fundamentalist Christian church at gunpoint to allow Satanists to attend their every meeting and even speak, to "teach the controversy".

Date: 2005-09-28 05:03 pm (UTC)I hope they realise the owner of precious Fox News also is one of the biggest owners in porn. Won't it be fun to go after them...
Besides, they haven't got a rat's chance in the cat house. Porn is as old as humanity's creative side and if the Dark Ages couldn't kill it, it is here to stay.

But wait; that would be logical. Instead we shall go after consenting adults having sex and sex education because everyone knows if no one talks about sex then everyone will wait till they are married /sarcasm
