And the Nobel Peace Prize goes to...

The United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency and its director, Mohamed ElBaradei

And as per usual, there's some critics and some who hail it. Me, I think it's an interesting choice. It can be seen as a support to deal with Iran though negotiations rather than threats and also a sign of the long-lasting Norwegian deidcation to the no-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

And as usual, the White House is probably rolling it eyes slightly, given that they did originally object to ElBaradei having a third term. HaHA.

Also of interest, White House denies 'God told Bush to invade Iraq' claims

For once in a blue moon, I find myself actually hoping the White House got it right. Scary.

That's weird about Bush. Even if he did say that, I'm thinking he'd be wrong, since God's interest in Middle Eastern politics is not, in the end, going to be sunshine and roses. Armaggedon and all that.

Still, I can't see how he'd be able to say something like that and not have war protesters commenting on him being actually mentally ill...

See, I really, really dislike Bush and I can't quite see him say it like that either. And not to the Palestinian PM. I can sorta see him yabber some about God probably wanting peace in the Middle East somewhat. Maybe.

The man scares me enough without statements like those.

I can totally see Bush saying something to the effect that peace in the Middle East would be something God wanted, but in weaker terms. That's not a terribly unusual sentiment.

Perhaps what happened is Bush said something that in English doesn't sound like, "I'm on a mission charged personally to me by God," but that it somehow got garbled in translation.

Then again, Bush Sr. and Dubya are both notorious for mangling English, and apparently so is Barbara Bush...so he could have said something like that and not mean it the way it came out. And then he would go back to Washington and his entire cabinet would beat him with all those Norwegian trout that keep showing up ;)

I'm not in love with the man myself, but even if I hated him, I couldn't imagine him saying something so completely boneheaded and actually mean it.

Many possibilities, indeed. I'm fairly sure it wasn't said exactly as reported, but that still doesn't mean what was said can't be bloody unnerving.

After all, Osama bin Laden thinks he's on a mission from his God too...

Verily true, that. Politics and religious fanaticism don't mix well.

I'm curious what the White House is claiming Bush said instead. I hope it's something that just got garbled...this administration has pulled enough stunts that frankly scare me (not everything...but enough!), we don't need a religious crusade on top of it.

There's a lot of things politics don't mix with, really. But religion is high, high, high on the list.

It is, I suppose, possible that Bush were trying to sound more like Islamic leaders and thus create a repoir with this Palestinian, and it all stems from that. But I don't want to overestimate him either.

I believe there's an actual mania for people who think they're divinly inspired. Hmmmmm...

You're right, it is an interesting choice. I want to know whether Bush will show up in next year's Ig(r) Nobel awards.

Hehehe. I'm sure he wouldn't find that honour too honouring.

Yeah, let's hope the White House got it right. I can imagine Bush saying such things all too easily.

[shudder]

I don't want to imagine it. It freaks me out.
