And Norway picks...
Oct. 7th, 2005 06:11 pmAnd the Nobel Peace Prize goes to...
The United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency and its director, Mohamed ElBaradei
And as per usual, there's some critics and some who hail it. Me, I think it's an interesting choice. It can be seen as a support to deal with Iran though negotiations rather than threats and also a sign of the long-lasting Norwegian deidcation to the no-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
And as usual, the White House is probably rolling it eyes slightly, given that they did originally object to ElBaradei having a third term. HaHA.
Also of interest, White House denies 'God told Bush to invade Iraq' claims
For once in a blue moon, I find myself actually hoping the White House got it right. Scary.

Date: 2005-10-07 11:07 pm (UTC)Perhaps what happened is Bush said something that in English doesn't sound like, "I'm on a mission charged personally to me by God," but that it somehow got garbled in translation.
Then again, Bush Sr. and Dubya are both notorious for mangling English, and apparently so is Barbara Bush...so he could have said something like that and not mean it the way it came out. And then he would go back to Washington and his entire cabinet would beat him with all those Norwegian trout that keep showing up ;)
I'm not in love with the man myself, but even if I hated him, I couldn't imagine him saying something so completely boneheaded and actually mean it.

Date: 2005-10-08 08:13 am (UTC)I'm curious what the White House is claiming Bush said instead. I hope it's something that just got garbled...this administration has pulled enough stunts that frankly scare me (not everything...but enough!), we don't need a religious crusade on top of it.
