10 things said to 10 people on my flist:

1. Sometimes, I think you try a little too hard to be great in the eyes of others.
2. It's been years and years and you're still kickass babe numero uno.
3. Why I'm on your flist, I will never get.
4. Muhahaha! Lured you in, too. Welcome to the mad world of the Ninth Doctor.
5. You're much more wonderful than you give yourself credit for. Also, Voltaire, Voltaire, Voltaire.
6. Why we even like each other across everything we utterly disagree on, I don't know. But I ain't complaining.
7. Mmmm-mmm. You are hot.
8. I like grammar. I wish you did too.
9. There's opinionated and there's you. But at least you're never boring.
10. If you're wandering out of CSI fandom too, I wonder why I should stay... Sniff.

[livejournal.com profile] adoralyna, who is on my list above and should be able to spot herself easily, gave me this link today:

"The founding fathers were Christians, they loved Jesus and wanted Him
to be glorified and the groundwork for America. For heavens sake, God is the ruler of America."

To: God, White House, US
Dear God. Congratulations on your landslide victory in the election that never was. Would like you to sign these bills into law before your smiting of the unworthy on national television (incidentally, the producers of Survivor are still suing you over "Unbeliever, Heaven has spoken. Prepare for smiting" claiming it to be too similar to theirs) and the five o'clock press briefing. Incidentally, FOX wants an exclusive. Told them they would get it as soon as Firefly comes back on the air.
Love, Archangel Gabriel

[livejournal.com profile] adoralyna: It always irritates me when people end everything they say with "Am I making sense?" "Do you get what I'm saying?"
[livejournal.com profile] misscam: I know. Am always tempted to answer "I get it. You just still suck"

I'm not trying to force anyone to believe anything, cuz that's up to God.

How good to know free will was just a marketing ploy after all.

Pardon me if I'm mistaken, but I thought the "under God" part was added in the 1950's or something...

I'm not trying to force anyone to believe anything, cuz that's up to God.

Proper spelling is left up to God as well, I take it? (Sorry, couldn't resist. :P)

Yup, the bit about "under God" was added in 1954 during the McCarthy era, to show we were different from the evil godless commies - we were God-fearing Americans and God was on our side. The pledge, as I recall, was originally published in a magazine aimed at kids, and wasn't written as anything official. It just sort of caught on. I also read somewhere that it was written by a flag salesman to boost sales of flags, but I haven't found anything to back that up.

I'm glad we won. I'm an atheist, and I remember feeling very uncomfortable having to recite the pledge daily when I was in school. We could refuse to say it, but in order to do so you needed a note from your parents explaining why, and there was reportedly a list of acceptable reasons for refusing the pledge. Atheism wasn't one of them. The only person I ever knew who got out of it was a Jehovah's Witness. I compromised by standing but not actually saying anything, and my teachers were always non-confrontational so I got away with it.

And atheism was not acceptable? Good grief.

Yeah, that's what I recall reading some time ago...

Yeah, I wasn't adament about this particular issue, but I have to agree. My own high school actually didn't have the pledge (I don't recall saying it a single time in all those four years--there was a chance in the morning provided to, but no one ever did it), and we're hardly disloyal to our country. Though back in junior high (while I was still Christian myself), I hated saying the pledge anyway, because I've always preferred keeping my pledges and prayers private, and didn't feel comfortable saying them every day around all my classmates.

This is really one of those moments when I feel like pulling off my smug "I'm an European and I think I know more about U.S. history than some Yanks" number. :P

Someone should tell ShaoeylovesOBmost777 about the denominational history of the different colonies, the deist beliefs of the founding fathers and the backstory of the Pledge of Allegiance. But then, what do I know, as I haven't accepted Jesus Christ as my personal saviour at age 5?

Actually, you might be on there. But not neccessarily as seven, given that I am a boringly vanilla heretorsexual.

Aw, you aren't vanilla. Not with your wicked ways (please refer to Warrick spanking saga, and icon).

And I tease, but generally any anonymous comments about me tend to refer to pornography so I'm guessing no. *heh* You have seen my ass though, bet you can't say that about most of your list :P

Dude, who is leaving the CSI fandom by the way? Besides you, for that british chap. *sigh*

That's only a fascade to hide my true vanillaness behind it all.

Indeed, generally I only get to see their boobies. How dull.

British chap, snerk. He's actually an alien, I'll have you know :P But more than one on my flist is actually getting bored with CSI, alas. [livejournal.com profile] teenwitch77, for instance.

Also me. The show is boring, boring, boring. Rob Thomas has ruined tv for me.

I'm not certain, but number 5 might pertain to me. I am the girl who loves Voltaire. But I know I'm not the only one. Also, I'm nowhere near wonderful, so chances are, it's probably someone else.

On those rare occasions when I wonder what it would be like to live in the US - say for a job - I wonder what I'd do with the child. Because there's no way in hell I'd let her say the Pledge. I wonder if they have to recite it in US-based French lycées?

Everyone's leaving. Rather sad.

5 might be you. Maybe.

Now you wouldn't have to, if it's been deemed unconstitutional and all. But you'd still have to endure Bush as head of state.

Aw Cam, it's getting so sad that so many people are leaving the CSI fandom. I really wish I wasn't getting bored with it :(

I wish I wasn't either, but what can you do...

Eh, it seems to be heavily implied that Warrick's marriage will hit troubles, and that the C/W isn't over, but I'm not sure I have any faith that it'll be done well, y'know?

I'm hearing that. It's starting to sound like a soap opera.

And I'll stop complaining about it now, because I know many people on your f'list probably still adore the show. *ducks* :D

Whoa, I missed something. The Pledge is now unconstitutional?

I can kinda see why, and the instant I could get away with it I never said the Pledge again (heck, even as a substitute teacher I would stand there and not do or say anything, mainly because a. America is not one nation under God, and b. that flag doesn't get my allegiance, it's a piece of cloth) but...but...unconstitutional? They said the same thing about moments of silence IIRC, which I thought was a nice alternative to allowing prayer.

It's getting a little itchy about all this...I've been in classrooms that had witchcraft spells readily available to students (and although I don't know for certain how many would know to look, but there were images of goddesses on each wall--I doubt they were decorative), but posting of those scary commandments things is bad bad bad. It makes my head hurt it does.

That said, yeah that dude needs to read up on his history. And check out his religion--Christianity says that God appoints all rulers, but the only country that is God's country is Israel. God kinda says that a lot. And check out the history of public schools--they weren't always this national right for which all are taxed whether they use them or not, once upon a time, public schools were designed for nefarious purposes.

And yes, second quote is dumb. Bah, God's not forcing anyone...::smites kid, but not very hard, because he probably is just a kid::

(And am I on that list or am I being paranoid? :)

Date: 2005-10-20 11:05 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
I've talked to atheists who find Christianity gets all the breaks. I've heard people of other faiths say the same. As with everything else, I think a lot has to do with perspective.

However, it must not be forgotten that Christianity is the *majority* religion of the US, which does mean you have to be a little careful with it because it has more influence. A lot more.

You're not on the list.

Date: 2005-10-20 11:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] highwindpav.livejournal.com
Aye, I've heard it said, and perspective is everything. I've read some things about Pagans living in a Christian country that I relate to almost point for point, feeling very much like a Christian in a Pagan country.

I understand being careful with a majority religion, but I don't know that the influnce is really as much as it seems, although there certainly is a lot of it. It's not an official religion...definitly there are very loud Christians trying to influence law and such, but there are also a lot of equally loud atheists and non-Christians trying to influence law. The pendulum is swinging, and I don't think there's any justice in 'oppressing the oppressors'. Not saying that's what's happening, but it very well could. Care has to be taken with how much any faith gets to influence.

(I suppose I should be relieved that I'm just paranoid :)

Date: 2005-10-20 11:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Well, from an outside viewpoint, Christianity seems to have a lot more influence in the US than say in Norway, and here it is the official religion even.

I'm not at all convinced the pendulum is swinging in the US at all, but I guess time will tell. If anything, parts of Europe worries it's swinging the other way. Of course, wars of religion have coloured our opinion, just as US history has coloured yours.

But you're certainly right that care should be taken with any faith with influence, be it Christianity, Islam or Asatru.

I loved fighting with her. She is good for getting creative juices flowing. I was thinking about maybe contacting her, bringing up some stupid, non researched issue, and just telling her I was right because I accepted God at 5. Oh wait, sorry....I didn't. I was too into Barbie at age five to care.

But she really is good for fighting with. Adora and I had fun.

Sneeerk. Barbie over God, huh? You unbeliever you. (But seriously, no one is capable of at five making any sort of informed decision about religion. At five, you listen to your parents.)

Do share if there's more fun in the future.
