Measures of Time, my current Doctor Who WIP, has part one up at Time and Chips, Whofic and ff.net.

One of the few fellow Norwegians on my flist, [livejournal.com profile] magika83 managed to meet John Barrowman last week, apparently. All of you who lust him may now groan in envy. And she hasn't even seen Doctor Who. I soon set about rectifying that, oh yes. The world is so unfair, innit?

I was watching Discovery this weekend and it had an "Extreme Engineering" program on the dikes of the Netherlands. The Netherlands, in case you were unaware, has a lot a lot of land under sea level and it's sinking. And I found it interesting (you'd be amazed what I find interesting), so I was watching and they were explaining how the various dikes worked and then they talked about how the weather in Northern Europe has been getting worse with more storms, and so on. So how would the Netherlands defend itself if it got hurricane-like-storms hurled at it?

To answer, the program looked to New Orleans and I nearly choked on my ice tea. Course, this program was made in 2003 or 2004, before Katrina. And there they were, talking about what would happen if a category five hurricane hit New Orleans, showing it in little computer simulations, and of course, it's exactly what bloody well did happen this year.

Which lead me to the conclusion that Bush and ilk could do with some serious Discovery watching.

Granted, being fond of Discovery channel (overshadowed only by my love of the BBC) I am slightly biased and all, but if Discovery channel managed to predict what would happen, you'd think maybe a few others would too and, I don't know, *plan slightly better*.

I'm only 25 and I'm already turning into a ranting old woman, sheesh.

Meme for the bored:
Comment with the lastest you did a copy&paste of.

(Me - summary for fic: Another wound of the time war, another fall, just as when Gallifrey burned and she became the last of her kind in the Universe. Just as he did. She alone but for him, and he alone but for Rose. He repaired her then. He'll repair her now. She saved him then. She'll save him now, save them both. She loves. [Nine/Rose(/the TARDIS)])

But I love your rants, Wise (and Old) Cam!;P

Is your new WIP "readable" even for completely unspoiled me?:) Btw, Le Doctuer Who premiered here in France this last Saturday...Too bad they air it on a channel I can't get!*cries*

And now...meme!

You'll hit old age too soon, you know. So shhh :P

Ehm. Good question. It's a sort of an AU for the last two episodes, but of course, if you don't know what happen in them, you won't know what I've invented and what is reflecting what happens in the episode. It's probably better read if you're spoiled, to put it that way.

You have the worst luck. Though of course, being French, they probably dub Chris's lovely voice and accent.

Just read that article... It depresses me.

I'll just have to wait, then...

eh, I've been wathcing Urgences (ER) and Cold Case on French tv...and French dubbing really kills the mood, even on American shows...so maybe it's for the best that I don't get to see France 4 and Dcoteur Who!:)

Just read that article... It depresses me

It depresses and even scares me a bit...Violence has spread to Nice too...I was up all night listening to fire trucks and police cars sirens baltring in the streets...

French dubbing kills a lot of things. I remember watching X-Files dubbed while there. Sheesh.

Definitely not good. It doesn't show any signs of calming down either. Best be careful.

You are both really, really young. So, hush.

Dubbing is evil and needs to be abolished. Subtitles are bad enough, particularly when things are badly translated, but at least you get the original intonation, etc.

I'm going to read the article as soon as I'm done proofing my freshly translated French CV. And I agree with Cam, Elisa, do take care of yourself. I have a feeling it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. It's possible that certain unions will strike, as well. (It is November, so it's certainly the right time of year for strikes.)

Not in mind we're not :P

Yes. Norway doesn't do dubbing (apart from children's programs) and I'm very, very grateful for it. Plus, with English, I can tell when it's being translated wrong in subtitles.

When it rains, it pours. Oi.

From: [identity profile] briasoleil.livejournal.com
No, not in mind, you're not. However, chronologically, you're both very, very young.

We have subtitles here. For which I'm quite grateful. Alas, since I'm only fluent in two languages and not a dozen or so, it does me little good. But at least I can appreciate the intent. Y'know?

I just watched most of VM with the French subtitles, which amused me greatly. There were a few doozies. Some things just don't translate well.

The situation in France has been escalating for ages. In La Haine, Kassovitz made an allusion between those living in "la cité" and those living in the Occupied Territories. It was an attempt to give an idea of the seriousness of the situation. And the anger and fury over the injustice of it are just fueling themselves. It's going to take a lot to diffuse it now.

Mind is what counts.

Yeah, I know. I'm only really fluent in three, but most of what is subtitled in Norway is English to Norwegian, and most of us here do speak that. (95% or so.)

Some things certainly don't translate well. I have fun translating Norwegian phrases into English and confusing people. "I smell owls in the moss!"

Yes, it will. I see the riots go on.

Latest copy/paste: plug for my comic anywayz...

I get the feeling that people don't put enough trust in computer simulations... or just don't care. Let's just hope the Netherlanders are Discovery-fans, hm?

From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Ah, that's those new icons you've been having. Makes sense now.

It wasn't just computer simulations, they'd interview experts and all that too. But I guess people like to ignore them too.

Given how much money the Netherlands have spent researching dike development, I'd say they are.

Yes, I assumed the show would be more than some pretty animations...
And yes, they probably are. They don't have to worry that much 'bout Bush, for a start...

Okay, but only if you promise to show Doctor Who and other British shows on channels that the majority of the population actually get. And also, make "liberal" a not-dirty word. Deal?

Jup, him and everybody working for him.
That's depressing though, that Discovery featured that and then it happened.. without anything being done to prevent it.

Yeah. Granted, some things you just cannot prevent because the Earth is one forceful ass-kicker, but prepare for it, you can.

Mmm... Discovery Channel... and yeah, shows like that are nice to see after all Bush's "I don't think anybody could have anticipated that this would happen" crap. Oh yeah, and him saying he didn't read newspapers a while back.

Ranting old young woman? Either I'm the same, or there's just a lot to rant about. (Could be both, admittedly.)

My latest C&P: #7e67dc (I guess that's the base color my current LJ/GJ layout uses, or something.)

And it wasn't even him I was there to see... But let me tell you that he was very good on stage and very handsome, charming and funny off stage. He insisted I stood on his right side for the picture, because apparently that was his "good side". :-) (Pic in my LJ - not a bad side at all!)

And she hasn't even seen Doctor Who.

I love the Discovery Channel. My History teacher actually taped Extreme Engineering for us this one time and it was about the Panama Canal. Good stuff.

I'm fifteen and I'm already jaded and cynical (most of the time) so you're not really alone.
