Here's clue number two - Islam is the second biggest religion in the world. Just like Christianity, it has many different sects, variations and etnicities within in. Not all are Arab. bin Laden is not the spokesman for them all, nor for something near a majority. al-Qaeda is about Islam about as much as IRA was about Catholisism, really.

Here's clue number three - take a long, hard look in the mirror and imagine someone offering "the judgement" on Christianity based on Fred Phelps and ilk. How would you feel?

I'm yellowskinned and female, and I used to go up to a Muslim country weekly (stopped cos it took too much time and got really busy). Of course, my puny little island country is surrounded by them, and we've certainly got a fair few here--18% Muslim according to stats. And you know what? Some of them are Chinese or of mixed blood or European. So. Heh.

Come to think of it, I probably have some Muslim friends. I'm quite certain I do. I just don't remember who they are because I have a memory like a sieve. But since I don't even remember what the hell religion they are, being Muslim clearly doesn't affect their behaviour none. --And I just remembered that I have a Muslim friend who's as bad a Muslim as I am a Catholic. I've heard many theories on what made the London bombers do it - seemingly well-adjusted men of civilized society. But really, whatever it was, I think it tells us more about humans than it does specifically muslims. Look at history and how many seemingly normal people have committed dreadful atrocities. Well, I have set foot in a muslim country and it was one of the most fascinating, meaningful and rewarding experiences I've ever had. It will be one of the few things that, as I'm lying on my deathbed, I will remember with great joy and absolutely zero regret.

I'll admit it was somewhat startling to see armed members of the army on the tarmac as we were driven to our airplane but I never, ever felt as though my life was in jeopardy.

My tour group (consisiting of 7 Canadians and about 15 Americans) was treated with consideration, respect, friendliness and much, much warmth. So much so, in fact, that by the end of the trip when we said our goodbyes to our guide, many of us, including our guide, were in tears. That tour guide, by the way, wanted to marry me off to "a family friend who was very, very rich". There is nothing remotely Arab or muslim about me. I am a Canadian (of Italian ethnicity) through and through and very "western" in my outlook and lifestyle, but she still thought I'd be the perfect woman for him.

So...in a muslim country, I shared laughter, had a fascinating and educational experience, and was considered a perfect match for someone who was very close to my tour guide. Yeah, that's just a horrible experience filled with violence and fraught with terror. [/sarcasm]

I feel sorry for that idiot you quoted and all the people out there who think that way because they are robbing themselves of learning and experiencing more of this world that we all live in. And I wouldn't be surprised if statistics would show that they're more likely to be shot care of a drive-by in America than in a visit to a muslim country.

There used to be only a handful of places I wanted to visit in my youth but that has changed with time. As I've gotten older, I've realised that I want to see as much of the world as I possibly can before I die. I want talk to people, learn from them, experience our similarities and our differences. We live in an amazing world filled with amazing people who have done and created amazing things. Why can't we all just enjoy and celebrate it?

Oh, she's talking about British immigrants, ja? Certainly if I passed this on to the Aboriginal groups here in .au, they'd probably agree with her on all points. So would the Maoris in New Zealand, any number of African tribes, a fair chunk of native populations in South-East Asia, and let's not forget all the native peoples of the Americas. The Brits are far less than lily-white in reputation internationally.

I'm not just referring to the colonial era, either. Even now, when British colonial authority over Australia is over 100 years distant, the largest group of illegal immigrants in Australia are actually British nationals who overstay visas. The largest non-Australian ethnic group on welfare in Australia are British citizens. The ethnic group with the largest "entitlement complex" in Australian culture are the Anglo-Celtic white ex-British (of whom I am one... I'm second generation Australian, 3 out of 4 grandparents were from the United Kingdom).

I went to Bosnia last summer for two weeks. Bosnia is a predominately Muslim country and I (sadly) am a stupid, white American girl. None of the Muslims there treated me poorly or anything! In fact, most of the Muslims there are like Christians here: they attend services every so often and then go home and get on with their lives. GAH! Never mind the fact that I've had a few Muslim friends in America since I was about 12 years old. I hate it when people do this. It's the fanatics you have to worry about, not normal people with a different religion than yours.
