Who Makes Wank, Cam Makes Friends
Jan. 8th, 2006 09:05 pmUh-oh, Doctor Who makes fandom_wank
Was bound to happen sooner or later, but that was so not the topic I imagined would do it. Oy.
Heritage in Europe is tricky to decide anyhoo, since when we were not having wars with each other, we had orgies. Look at us mingle. Why, my forefathers were very hot on maim, plunder, ravege and shag-your-helmet-off. Go Vikings.
So, have a bucnh of new people on my flist - hello, hello. Have welcome-chocolate. Don't hesitate to jump in whenever you feel like.
Also, for this reason I am resurrecting an old meme:
I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. I read your fic, or we have something else in common and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you.
But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...she likes office supplies."
I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal.
(And if you've newly friended me, why not introduce yourself?)

Date: 2006-01-08 08:22 pm (UTC)Anyway, to reply to the meme...let's see here. Well, I live on the other side of the pond in the land where Bush looks *really* tired. (Hoping that if I repeat that enough something nice'll happen) My little pet peeve in the universe is bad!fic - something which I enjoy bashing, pointing at, and mocking to the nth degree. Speaking of which, I did start up 'Good Fic Appreciation Week' over at my LJ *hint, hint* And...interesting tidbit, I'm a rocket scientist by degree (no, really, I am :)).

Date: 2006-01-08 08:46 pm (UTC)You know, this reminds me of a time in third grade, where we small people had to find out one of our countries of origin and do group projects based on them. All the kids thought it was great and got totally into it, and I had great fun making a kite with an Irish flag. So, yeah, the "what are you?" question is in our school systems and everything.
I suppose I can see why asking could be taken as offensive, but I never thought that being asked where my ancestors came from was an insinuation that I wasn't "American" enough. Me, I'm half Scottish on my dad's side. My older brothers and sister went to boarding school in Scotland, and I imagine I would have gone too if my dad hadn't died when I was about five. So not only am I interested in Scotland as a place of ancestral origin, I'm interested in it in connection with the father I didn't get a chance to know all that well, who I'm certain could have told me some great stories about visiting Scotland, and possibly even taken me there.
Of course, though I may be Scottish in origin, I am certainly not a Scot. I've lived in America my whole life, and I don't know what it's like to live in Scotland. I'm just interested. Just like being interested in who my biological father was doesn't mean I love my stepdad any less. I just want to know where I came from.
And, uh, I like key lime pie better than any other kind, but I can't eat it because it's full of milk.

Date: 2006-01-08 08:55 pm (UTC)Fandoms: started off in Lois and Clark about ten or so years ago, started fanfic-writing there in 1997 or 8, won a few fandom awards along the way, kind of got stale in L&C and almost at the same time saw CE's Doctor Who in downloads... and was hooked. That's about it. As to why I friended you - I adore your writing and am envious as hell of it, and when I peeked into your LJ I discovered that I tend to agree pretty strongly with your politics.
And, yes, Bush does look tired. Come to think of it, so does Blair... ;)

Date: 2006-01-08 08:59 pm (UTC)My name is Alex; I am seventeen, and will soon go to university in New Zealand; I hail from Australia originally, but have lived in several other countries, including England, which was my favourite. Things I like far too much: run-on sentences, greenery, fandom, food. Things I hate: stupidness. My favourite smells are lavander, the glue they use to bind books with, and wet sandstone.
Last night I went to bed, couldn't sleep, and spent the next two hours writing porn. I slept easily after that.
This - *points* - is my favourite icon.
I will bite any fingers that are waved in my face. It's something I picked up from my cat. I have quite strong, chompy teeth.
I think... Yes. That is all.

Date: 2006-01-08 09:09 pm (UTC)Recently I invented an extended family and some extremely odd radioactive particles so that I could progress a plotline involving souls being ripped up. This does not strike me as odd. And the original character only had a brief description and a few moral values for me to go on.

Date: 2006-01-08 09:13 pm (UTC)Me - I'm 25, my name's Camilla. These days I watch most current affairs and sports on telly, though I am fond of the odd show, like Doctor Who. I work a bit irregulary, which can limit my time online now and then. But I like to fiddle about on the Net and write my silly things.
As for the rest - this might be a start.

Given how opionated I am, I'm pretty impressed as many people seem to agree with me as there is - and even more impressed I have friends who don't. Even people who like Bush and still read this LJ. Yay for tolerant friends.

Date: 2006-01-08 09:27 pm (UTC)I've always liked you fic although I never really registered who wrote them *hangs her head in shame*
Want to write as beautifully as you do, without suceeding much ^^
Ok, something else about me... My ancestors were pretty good with the maiming and pillaging themselves, so, I guess 'Go, Teutonics'. There, I never thought I would say something like that.

Date: 2006-01-08 09:27 pm (UTC)I spent this afternoon at a technical museum gazing at the masts, decks and rigging of various model sailing ships. I would have bought their model of the HMS Victory in the kids' section of the museum shop, but the bloody thing didn't even have tiny guns. And I'd like to have my men-of-war with guns, thank you very much. Even though this might be a bit gory.
As for tonight, I've just finished watching Casanova (yes, the one with David Tennant), and it amused me to no end that Casanova poses at a physician at one point in his career, telling everyone that he's a doctor. And there's also discussion about his teeth and a cameo by Margaret the Slitheen. Heh.
Apart from that, RTD must have been on crack when he wrote that script. No, Casanova's threesome with a pair of sisters didn't really bother me, but some of the deliberate anachronisms were a bit much. Personal pet peeve -- there wouldn't have been such a thing as Germany on an 18th-century map, dammit. Yes, I am a dork.
But I've now totally added David Tennant to my harem of imaginary boyfriends. That guy could literally charm the pants off me.
Um, yeah, that's it. Wait ... no. I've also written more Whovian fanfiction, but that's blatant SSP now, isn't it? :)

Anyway, that's my two cents

Date: 2006-01-08 09:50 pm (UTC)Also, I adore romantic relationships in which one character ends up killing the other.
This, I think, is why it would be best for the world in general if I never fell in love.
