Uh-oh, Doctor Who makes fandom_wank

Was bound to happen sooner or later, but that was so not the topic I imagined would do it. Oy.

Heritage in Europe is tricky to decide anyhoo, since when we were not having wars with each other, we had orgies. Look at us mingle. Why, my forefathers were very hot on maim, plunder, ravege and shag-your-helmet-off. Go Vikings.

So, have a bucnh of new people on my flist - hello, hello. Have welcome-chocolate. Don't hesitate to jump in whenever you feel like.

Also, for this reason I am resurrecting an old meme:

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list. Some people I know relatively well. I read your fic, or we have something else in common and we chat occasionally. Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself. Any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...she likes office supplies."

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal.

(And if you've newly friended me, why not introduce yourself?)

*snorts* Well, it was only a matter of time before Doctor Who made it to fandom_wank. But what a way to make it there. *shakes her head* Honestly, *who cares?* Gotta love it when folks get boggled by the minutiae of TV shows.

Anyway, to reply to the meme...let's see here. Well, I live on the other side of the pond in the land where Bush looks *really* tired. (Hoping that if I repeat that enough something nice'll happen) My little pet peeve in the universe is bad!fic - something which I enjoy bashing, pointing at, and mocking to the nth degree. Speaking of which, I did start up 'Good Fic Appreciation Week' over at my LJ *hint, hint* And...interesting tidbit, I'm a rocket scientist by degree (no, really, I am :)).

Oh, right. Work today killed my memory - but tomorrow starts a new week, so might be fitting then, no?

Bush does look more and more tired. Poor man. He must be feeling ill ;)

Hiya, my name's Sinead, I'm from Ireland. I'm a huge nine/rose shipper, I love fic, I've got brown hair, green eyes. I tend to be either happy and giddy or cynical and sarcastic, depends what mood you catch me in. ;) I'm a huge fan of Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party and the Killers... God this staring to get hard.... hmmmm I love chocolate.... SATC, BTVS,HP etc. have all been programmes I've simply loved. Ever seen Father Ted? It's complete genius! I do like a bit of Little Britain too and God love me I do watch the O.C and Desp. Housewives. Jesus, it sounds like all I do is watch t.v! I swear I do other things. Well, I do spend a lot of time on the computer. I'm at school at the moment too. Just finished a big exam year, all went well, now I have a bit of a doss year. Yay! I like reading, writing(badly) and I love, love, love fashion. So weekends are spent watching tv, on the p.c, with friends, going shopping, working or at my acting classes. I think I've just told you my life story lol Oh well, I tend to be quite chatty(or type-y) too!!! Nice to meet you. All I know 'bout you is you write fantastic fic, would you care to elaborate?

Heh, now there's an intro.

Me - I'm 25, my name's Camilla. These days I watch most current affairs and sports on telly, though I am fond of the odd show, like Doctor Who. I work a bit irregulary, which can limit my time online now and then. But I like to fiddle about on the Net and write my silly things.

As for the rest - this might be a start.

*tilts head* Um. Well.

You know, this reminds me of a time in third grade, where we small people had to find out one of our countries of origin and do group projects based on them. All the kids thought it was great and got totally into it, and I had great fun making a kite with an Irish flag. So, yeah, the "what are you?" question is in our school systems and everything.

I suppose I can see why asking could be taken as offensive, but I never thought that being asked where my ancestors came from was an insinuation that I wasn't "American" enough. Me, I'm half Scottish on my dad's side. My older brothers and sister went to boarding school in Scotland, and I imagine I would have gone too if my dad hadn't died when I was about five. So not only am I interested in Scotland as a place of ancestral origin, I'm interested in it in connection with the father I didn't get a chance to know all that well, who I'm certain could have told me some great stories about visiting Scotland, and possibly even taken me there.

Of course, though I may be Scottish in origin, I am certainly not a Scot. I've lived in America my whole life, and I don't know what it's like to live in Scotland. I'm just interested. Just like being interested in who my biological father was doesn't mean I love my stepdad any less. I just want to know where I came from.

And, uh, I like key lime pie better than any other kind, but I can't eat it because it's full of milk.

Date: 2006-01-08 09:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
I think it's more common to ask in America, since you're all fairly new there and the country is still young - unless of course you're a Native. n Europe, we've been living in close quarters for millenia and crossed borders merrily, countries have died and been born and like I said - really, it's a big orgy. So asking a European their heritage can lead to slight WTF-reaction from said European. Just because they might not have thought much about it or in any way thought it important.

Hi, I'm Wendy - yeah, kind of obvious, really - and I'm... well, easier to say what I was than what I am! I'm Irish by birth and nationality, moved to the UK when I was 24 for work reasons - which is why most Irish emigrants end up in the UK - and spent the next sixteen years as a university professor. Have a doctorate, but these days am not even Dr on my credit cards. ;) Moved to Canada 18 months ago in search of a more relaxed, less stressed life, and so far managing it. Took a year off to try my hand at full-time novel-writing, was spectacularly unsuccessful (see some of my posts here for why: http://sporadicscrivener.blogspot.com/) and am now about to go back to university to gain a qualification to get me into the line of work I really want to do.

Fandoms: started off in Lois and Clark about ten or so years ago, started fanfic-writing there in 1997 or 8, won a few fandom awards along the way, kind of got stale in L&C and almost at the same time saw CE's Doctor Who in downloads... and was hooked. That's about it. As to why I friended you - I adore your writing and am envious as hell of it, and when I peeked into your LJ I discovered that I tend to agree pretty strongly with your politics.

And, yes, Bush does look tired. Come to think of it, so does Blair... ;)

Date: 2006-01-08 09:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Lois and Clark, eh? Watched that show on and off a bit myself. But you're sure more faithful to your fandoms than me - I've been around a bit. Naughty me. Most recent before Doctor Who was CSI, where I did okay enough, I suppose.

My mere bachelor degree bows to your doctorate ;)

Given how opionated I am, I'm pretty impressed as many people seem to agree with me as there is - and even more impressed I have friends who don't. Even people who like Bush and still read this LJ. Yay for tolerant friends.

My name is Alex; I am seventeen, and will soon go to university in New Zealand; I hail from Australia originally, but have lived in several other countries, including England, which was my favourite. Things I like far too much: run-on sentences, greenery, fandom, food. Things I hate: stupidness. My favourite smells are lavander, the glue they use to bind books with, and wet sandstone.

Last night I went to bed, couldn't sleep, and spent the next two hours writing porn. I slept easily after that.

This - *points* - is my favourite icon.

I will bite any fingers that are waved in my face. It's something I picked up from my cat. I have quite strong, chompy teeth.

My imaginative abilities are mainly manifested by fan-fanfictional characters acting out whatever I have in mind at the time, paying little attention to original settings. Although, in my favour, I do do this very creatively. I tend to create cultures, abilities, catastrophes, relationships, plot twists, and theories -some of which would never have been invented if I hadn't messed around.

Recently I invented an extended family and some extremely odd radioactive particles so that I could progress a plotline involving souls being ripped up. This does not strike me as odd. And the original character only had a brief description and a few moral values for me to go on.

Want to write as beautifully as you do, without suceeding much ^^

Ok, something else about me... My ancestors were pretty good with the maiming and pillaging themselves, so, I guess 'Go, Teutonics'. There, I never thought I would say something like that.

As for tonight's meme -- here's something about me:

I spent this afternoon at a technical museum gazing at the masts, decks and rigging of various model sailing ships. I would have bought their model of the HMS Victory in the kids' section of the museum shop, but the bloody thing didn't even have tiny guns. And I'd like to have my men-of-war with guns, thank you very much. Even though this might be a bit gory.

As for tonight, I've just finished watching Casanova (yes, the one with David Tennant), and it amused me to no end that Casanova poses at a physician at one point in his career, telling everyone that he's a doctor. And there's also discussion about his teeth and a cameo by Margaret the Slitheen. Heh.

Apart from that, RTD must have been on crack when he wrote that script. No, Casanova's threesome with a pair of sisters didn't really bother me, but some of the deliberate anachronisms were a bit much. Personal pet peeve -- there wouldn't have been such a thing as Germany on an 18th-century map, dammit. Yes, I am a dork.

But I've now totally added David Tennant to my harem of imaginary boyfriends. That guy could literally charm the pants off me.

Um, yeah, that's it. Wait ... no. I've also written more Whovian fanfiction, but that's blatant SSP now, isn't it? :)

Germany was still a bunch of different baronies and what-not back then, right? I need to reread my German history, it's been a while since I was taught all that.

I obviously need to watch Casanova. And fancy DT some.

Hey Miss Cam. We haven't spoken for years now, before even OFUM. I struck up a conversation (same AIM SN as my LJ SN) about Rising Star, Falling Darkness which I was a big fan of. I was also obsessed later by OFUM but by then you had become quite a star in the LotR fandom and I didn't think you wanted to be bothered.

Since then I found you on LJ and I like to read your comments about the media and I check the links for the news. I mainly friended you in the first place to hear about your fics but your posts are very interesting otherwise.

I'm British, I tend to find myself attracted to the most inappropriate fictional characters possible, I collect notebooks obsessively, I fear that the world will never see another person of Shakespeare's calibre, I kiss people's hands for no good reason, I believe that the loss of the pronoun 'thou' was a tragic one and fully intend to form some kind of oddly-named group to revive it (I'm considering 'The Early Modern English Rejuvenation Squad'), I love Doctor Who and Red Dwarf and I think that people who write 'should of' instead of 'should've' should be shot, or at least bludgeoned with a frozen tuna.

Also, I adore romantic relationships in which one character ends up killing the other.

This, I think, is why it would be best for the world in general if I never fell in love.

I've just started to discover Doctor Who thanks to this here LJ (and [livejournal.com profile] dragonlp86). I like the Doctor/Rose ship. I'm kinda a sucker for ships. I used to like CSI more, but it's starting to lose my interest. I'm a huge X-Files and Buffy fan. Amber Benson and Gillian Anderson are my two favorite actresses. I like writing fic (BtVS), but I haven't had much time to as of late because of school stuff. Next year I'm off to college to study premed. This morning, my hair is curled, I did my eyes in shades of brown, and I used pink lip gloss to go with my pink-and-brown outfit. I love dressing up and looking fancy, but one must be careful that one doesn't overdo these things. Sundays and special occasions do it for me.
