CSI, Doctor Who and Cat Love
Jan. 12th, 2006 09:26 pmSo, CSI spoilers...
The spoiler-sources at YTDAW haveth revealed that Lady Heather is returning to CSI for an episode - and hugs Grissom at the end of the episode, after he's been forced to kill someone.
This does not amuse a great portion of the GSR crowd. Hoo boy, does it ever not amuse. People rant, talk about quitting the show and rain abuse upon TPTB. Cam ponders fanfic implications of Grissom killing someone and realises she has in fact more or elss given up on the GSR show-wise. Oh dear.
Granted, I've always been a bit on and off with GSR, but I am so not liking where the characters have been taken in the show. And there's only so much I can compensate for that in my head, y'know? I try to enjoy GSR as a fanfic-ship, but much, much badfic makes me sad. I was going to write GSR for the
geekfiction, and now I am tempted to write something widly dysfunctional because really, that's what the show is giving me right now.
The writing has just - blah-blahed me of late, and Doctor Who is just ever so shiny. (Not to mention there's more hand-holding in the first episode of the new series than in six years of CSI.) I gather I'm not the only one who feels that way (minus perhaps the wild Who love). Which makes me wonder if maybe six or so years is about the pain threshold for a show. I started getting blaaah about X-Files around that age of it too. I guess we'll see where CSI goes from here. But perhaps it's about time to pack up the circus - or think seriously new.
So, GSR crowd boos on - with some exceptions - and this before the episode has even aired. When it does air, there will be wanking. Assuming at least some of the episode remains as it is. Will it be the death of the ship? Will fandom implode? Will BNFs be very loud in their opinions? Will there be fall-outs? Will Cam's smutfic have wild monkey sex with a side of dysfunctional because of this? Cam will keep you updated. If she can tear herself away from the Doctor Who: Adults Only Special in her head, that is.
Meanwhile, in another fandom,
dark_aegis and I have started
featuredwhovian. Not much up there yet but icons and banner (all courtesy of the lovely
dragonlp86), but you can join up early if you think you'll be interested in it. Our first victim will be announced, and a FAQ should also pop up soon.
Also,
mademoisellenon? You made fandom_wank.
Finally, thank for all good wishes for the cat. I am happy to announce he is going very well. He hasn't tried to bite open the stitches, and takes his medication with only a slight distaste. He even demanded to sleep in my bed today, curled up against me, so he seems his old self. I'm going to spoil him seriously this weekend for being good.

Date: 2006-01-12 08:47 pm (UTC)I didn't read the spoiler thread, but I don't get how it's THAT terrible that Lady Heather huges Grissom? People I have no sexual feelings for have hugged me in my life, and I've hugged people I have no sexual feelings for. Then again, if Sara and Grissom look at each other or something it means OMG THEY ARE SO IN LOVE!!!!111 so I guess in that context I can see how a hug is equal to wild, passionate sex.

Date: 2006-01-12 08:52 pm (UTC)I've been thinking a lot about CSI and fanfic lately, because I'm going to try and revive one of my novel-length WIPs as a gift for a friend, and I remember how much fun it was to write CSI when everything was going well. Arguably, it's the most popular show in the country, so everything is still going exceedingly well, but I have to consciously ignore 95% of what the show has done with Sara's character to think fondly on it. Maybe that means I can't adapt. At least I'm not sitting around whingeing about the same thing every two weeks.
In conclusion: Doctor Who is indeed very, very shiny. *clings to her happy new show*

Date: 2006-01-12 09:08 pm (UTC)I'm guessing it's because 1) six years of show, not one Grissom-Sara hug combined with 2) it was implied in LH's earlier ep that she and Grissom got it on which might make it seem more than a hug and 3) people are frustrated with the show in general and this might be the drop that made the cup spill over.

Date: 2006-01-12 09:18 pm (UTC)Yeah, you rather does have to ignore the show on air if you want a good show in your head. Because damn, character murder. Not just Sara, though I agree with you that was rather hideous. There are days I am tempted to just write a giant AU fic from season three or four or so and have the characters do what I think is IC. Cam!CSIs. Warrick would take his shirt off more and Sara would drink less. And Grissom would emote.
*is intrigued about the WIP* Some CSI goodfic would not go awry these days.
*clings to Doctor Who as well* You're not going to do to us what CSI did, are you, beloved silly show?

Date: 2006-01-12 09:34 pm (UTC)The show is not one giant butterfly symbolism, gah.
*snerk* I was at my most active at YTDAW (and by extension the entire CSI fandom) when "Butterflied" aired. At the time, I had fun. In retrospect, hilarity. And that was two years ago - they're still pushing the metaphor?

WORD. Catherine would remember she has a daughter. (And by extension, remember what age Lindsay actually is.) Nick would also take his shirt off, and be brotherly and over-protective of Sara, and...yup. Definitely better in my head. Sigh. I never wanted to become one of those fans!
The fic in question is...oh, about 30K words long atm, a pre-series AU set on one of the possible futures I outlined in "Roulette," the one where Sara never becomes a CSI and gets engaged to Ken Fuller. It had stalled about halfway through due to some narrative difficulties but, as I discovered a few nights ago when I read it through, I actually fixed them all at the time. I must have just gotten fed up with editing and with the CSI fandom at the same time and left it to languish.

I think the fact that the show we are currently in love with is actually Season 27 bodes very, very well.

Date: 2006-01-12 09:51 pm (UTC)Bwhaha! And yes, I know. Even had a bit of a wank-in with a mod. Fun times.
The butterfly metaphor does indeed live still. It pops up in fanfic, butterflies get spotted on the show, fans buy butterfly things. It lives like whoa. There was even wank when some CGR people started using butterflies as a CGR symbol and many GSR people were miffed.
I never wanted to become one of those fans!
It's either that or insanity these days, I think.
Iiiiinteresting. I look forward to said fic, then. I haven't read much GSR of late due to tripe overload, but I should be recovered in not too long.
It's weird to remember how old Doctor Who really is - but you are indeed right, it is a good sign. It's certainly past the teenage stage. May BBC continue to feed it well and give it plenty of exercise so it can live a very long time. Fingers crossed.
And amazingly, it's really a kid's show we love this much.
ARGH HTML.

Date: 2006-01-12 11:05 pm (UTC)Oh, and my thing when it comes to moronic G/S shippers and this episode -
Why do they want it to be Sara there? Are they really, really that frelling stupid? If Sara was there, she'd be the one forced to shoot the suspect, because she, unlike Douchebag McGee over there, carries her weapon because people keep shooting at CSIs.
Can you imagine the Can of Doom that would be for her though? Sweet holy moly. Not that they'd actually bother with things like characterization or not dropping a major plotline the very next week.
But there are pirates. So I'm actually pretty excited. And I like Lady Heather. I've liked her since her conversation with Catherine, and she flipped her personality so quickly to get on Cath's good side and picked out just how to relate to her in 5 seconds. That is, was, will be, always awesome. I love chameleon characters.
