Regarding stereotypes, no one can understand the severity of those associated with African Americans better than someone has grown up in the Deep South. So much bad blood still exists down here on both sides; the memory of slavery in our backyards and the far more recent realities of segregation, lynchings, race riots...yeah. And yes, bigotry from both races can still be worse down here than basically anywhere else in the world.

In grade school, I got the crap beaten out of me more than once just for being white. But did it happen because these kids were black and black=evil? No. It happened due to a failure on a few individuals' parents' part to teach them a more constructive way of dealing with (justifiable)fear and anger. It happened because of a society that teaches us to strike out at issues as one big, bad generalization rather than examining the particulars. It had nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with ignorance- a quality that exists far above any particular race or religion.

I could have perpetrated that cycle. I could have judged and hated an entire race of mostly good people due to a few negative experiences. I could have been an idiot. But I'm not and I possess enough intelligence to look beyond a ridiculous stereotype and to toss out the few bad apples in any race, not the whole bushel.

I think what most people fail to realize is that black people fear us much more than we fear them, with far more shit to back it up. Sure, there has been a lot of black crime. (I won't go into poverty, drug addiction and other factors that contribute to this- circumstances that are largely the fault of white oppression) What I will point out is that putting those crimes on a scale beside the crimes of white people against black folks? That's like comparing a bicycle to a freight train.

On my part, I'd become far more nervous late at night running into a white male in an isolated area than a black male. Why? Because I have a paranoia about serial killers and the majority of those are young, average looking caucasian males. My own discrimination perhaps but I was living in Tallahassee while Ted Bundy was perpetrating his reign of terror on young white women and reading the horrors that he subjected his victims to. I saw one of his crime scenes at a distance and, right or wrong, that shit tends to stick with you.

I don't fear crime, rather the motivation behind it. I don't fear folks who commit crimes due to desperation or simply getting carried away with themselves. I fear the sociopaths of the world- the Mansons, the Bundys, the Gacys- those who kill for the pure pleasure of doing so. How many black sociopathic serial killers do you hear about?

I'm not saying its right to discriminate on either end but my point is that whatever one wants to blame another race for, whites are likely guilty of something just as bad and usually worse. And I can back that up with statistics and historical evidence, not blind ignorance.

The history of Europe is a stunning example of people being shitty to oteher people due to race, religion and for shit and giggles. Then again, so Asian history. I think in fact we can safely say what all races have in common is a history of being nasty to others, and others being nasty to them.

And yeah, you're right, it is an easy cycle to keep going. That does not make it justifiable.

Okay. That goes a little beyond the normal range of "insane" right past "batshit" into "sheer incoherence". Has anyone thought of doing this poor woman a service and phoning up the local loony bin and advising them to make a collection?

It would be nice if people came with warning labels. "Warning: talking to this person may cause raised blood pressure, headaches and other stress symptoms" or "Warning: talking to this person is not advised while driving or operating heavy machinery" or something similar. Or maybe a nice little system of colour codings - red label for people who are completely and utterly off the scale of reasonable, purple for the ones who can't utter a single sentence without inserting polysyllabic nullities, black for racists, something like that.

Honestly, I look at things like this and I come to the decision that democracy doesn't so much need defending as prosecuting.

Now, I admit that for a short time after Sept. 11th, I felt afraid that the Islamic extremists would make another attack on my country. It was almost easy to blame that religion and its pratictioners. But then I saw the Arab Islamic population of my school being tormented for their nationality and their beliefs, and it angered and saddened me. I realized that most Muslims are even more of victims, as they are being blamed and terrorized for something that they had no part in.

The racism is just wrong, utterly and completely wrong. It makes my brain hurt.
