On the Sueness of OFUM and randomness
Mar. 9th, 2003 06:04 amOkay, so OFUM got a review saying thusly:
if you don't like mary sue or OOC, why do you write it? practice what you preach
I then had the following conversation
psychicsaphie: How the hell is it a Mary Sue?
psychicsaphie: Or OOC?
psychicsaphie: The characters are acting like themselve, just in a different setting and situation.
El Camita: I don't know. Well, the OOC part... Elves don't normally dress up in Black Leather...
psychicsaphie: And your characters are FAR from perfect.
psychicsaphie: They do at OFUM.
El Camita: I think it [the Sue remark, ed.] was referring to Miss Cam
psychicsaphie: The situation calls for it, I think.
psychicsaphie: {giggles}
El Camita: yeah, right
El Camita: it's not just an excuse to oogle some Elven ass
psychicsaphie: No offense Miss Cam, but Miss Cam is far from perfect. You can't be perfect when you're evil.
psychicsaphie: That's what makes Miss Cam so great.
psychicsaphie: Because it's Miss Cam.
El Camita: lol. So basically Miss Cam is not a Sue because she is Miss Cam.
psychicsaphie: Exactly!
The great thing about circular logic - hard to argue with. Of course, if the reviewer had been signed in or left an e-mail addy, I would love to have a discussion about it and perhaps improve on whatever was wrong (if I saw the logic in the argument of course, I can't follow every wish or comment I get on OFUM - some of it conflicting to start with). But no. Just an anon review, hence I can either just leave it there (it'll probably be drowned out) or remove it (I'd do it if that lead to the person actually signing it or adding to it). Oh well. It still beats a 'ur so great!' review. At least it was spelled correctly (but a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence is your friend). Whee!
In LQ news, go read here - On plagiarism. Ah, LQ, enimga wrapped in a thesarus ribboned with illogic and mangled English that you are. And the PPC board has a flamer - Wash your mouth. Tsk. Not even creative insults.
Meanwhile, I have reread Good Omens three times in a week. I love that book. Pratchett, I thee worship. And Douglas Adams, R.I.P. I nearly wept when I heard he was dead - and Astrid Lindgren, whose books I grew up on and will always remind me of innocence (though her books were often serious) and hope.
Hey! Daylight... Better go to bed... (Naughty Cam. Naughty, naughty)
