Finally, finally, I have managed to sleep and get some time off. Thank you, life!

And it figures that after being absent pretty much a week, the first thing I get pointed to nearly the moment I come online is the dw_hate comm - and later, crimetv_hate (I guess this is what happens when I get dubbed "resident wankthropologist" by the likes of velocityofsound. Now there's an awesome title I should get on an icon. Still, quite the "welcome back, Cam" there). Ah, fandom. You're so different and so the same everywhere, aren't you? In fact, I vaguely recall some time back hate memes sweeping through HP and LotR fandom, and now it seems to be sweeping across LJ again. Yay? Boo? Don't care?

Fandom is so very human in all its petty ways sometimes, innit? Which you either can laugh at, ignore, or go insane over. I seem to manage to combine all three approaches at times. I am amused at the claim that nostalgia_lj and myself are really just one person, though. Hee. Team Puppy, me and nos.

Uh, SergeantHeretic's computer was hacked by her neighbour, who mnaged to do something with the phone line, and who then made several somewhat disparaging comments as SergeantHeretic and as 'anonymous', portrayed as flaming her. Little Baldwin caught that the IPs were the same, so we all thought she was trolling until Union_Jack discovered she'd been hacked.

And some people suspected her of lying because UJ mentioned that she thought it might have been the badfic author, but it wasn't.

A neighbour 'spliced into her phone line', somehow tracked her down onto the PPC board, posted rude messages about her as 'anon', and all because they have an issue with her sexuality, apparently. But have no fear, they were identified, caught, arrested AND charged within hours of it all happening.

And some people suspected her of lying because UJ mentioned that she thought it might have been the badfic author, but it wasn't.
Well, no, it was because the IP addresses were the same - i.e. the same computer was used.

I voted "kind of funny" only because after seeing these things tossed around for years, it's inevitable that they devolve into something funny and heartening with lots of love tossed back and forth. I think hate memes are funny, because they are so lame, but that's just me. Then again, my fandom can't even get it together for a hate meme, so maybe that's why they haven't upset me as they have other people. Luckily, my fandom's wank is fairly limited to ship v. ship, so if someone were to blast you anonymously on one you'd laugh, and not worry it was a friend or some sort of bizarre psychological warfare from someone you know. That would most righteously suck.

You know, there was an sga_hate comm, but it was here and gone while I was too busy with classes to catch anything but references to it. I was very confused as to what it was (I asked someone, but they may have taken my naivete as something more sinister, I guess, considering how obvious it should have been) until I ran across this and followed the link provided to dw_hate. I feel dumb. I was thinking it was maybe a comm for people who didn't like SGA? Apparently not.

It's only possible to click one on your poll, but I think hate memes are both counter-productive and kind of funny/interesting, in a fandom_wank, trainwreck sort of way. You feel bad, but you can't help gawking.
