WTF, Portugal and Netherlands? Sixteen yellow cards? Four red, a new record? That's some nasty, nasty shit. Obviously made for high drama when watching, but good grief. None of you deserved to go through when playing like that.

But Portugal did. I hope England kicks their ass next round, even if England's been playing rather blah.

Sixteen. Good bloody grief.

Nothing in this World Cup surprises me anymore.

Well, Portugal vs. England in the European Championships didn't go all that well, if I remember....

I'll look forward to watching it, though - it was fairly powerful feeling today to hear God save the Queen before the match. I get emotional at national anthems...

Yes, but then Portugal had home advantage and they do not this time. Plus, two of their good players are out on red cards. So we'll see.

National athemes are funny things - so different and sometimes so similar in ways as well.

It wasn't that bad - 2-2 draw with Portugal winning on penalties.

Heh! I know, I just sat there going WTF! I went off to do something and came back to find that two more players had been sent off.

We better beat Portugal. I want major revenge after Euro 2004.

High drama, truly. And booing and fights and what-not. A match that'll be remembered for being plain nasty, really.

I hope you do. I will cheer England, even if I've been lukewarm on the English team so far.

In my country's defense, if any team should have gone through, it would have to be the Dutch team. Portugal was far more violent, and it wasn'tsurprising that the Dutch ended up getting hot-headed after a time. After all, Portugal got only half the cards they deserved. (Figo only yellow? WTF?)

Foulest game ever. Of course, the ref was awful to start with.

From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Mmm. Though it rather seemed to me that Holland did start the trend by two rather nasty fouls on Ronaldo, who did have to limp off after a while.

The ref did seem more keen on giving the cards than trying to prevent them by being a bit proactive.

Oh, I'm not saying that we started out cleanly, but from what I could see not every kick was intentional. That said- Portugal was still infinitely worse, and that's just their, um... well, what passes for 'style'. I remember our last match against Portugal all too well. Portugal doesn't play football, Portugal dropkicks, headbutts, and rolls on the floor stalling.

The ref is unfit for the World Cup. He was just as bad in the previous match he did, apparently.

I know! Crazy shit. But it didn't feel like such a bad-tempered game, not like the USA/Italy game. I think the ref just lost control. Figo should have been off though, he really should.

Might say it was more a game of players losing their heads and doing stupid shit. I mean, kicking away the ball is not such nasty, but it sure is asking to get a card and disrupting the play, as well as pissing off the other team.

Date: 2006-06-25 10:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vaskalcorp.livejournal.com
Not to mention the blatent hard shoves when the ball wasn't even in play.

From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Oh yeah. I saw one player kicking poor Robben in the ribs. Not nice at all.

The fouls weren't neccessarily all that outrageous all the time, but there were just so many of them.

England? *yawns*

Okay, I know I said that before.

You certainly have. But let's face it, if they do get to the semis, they'll most likely meet Brazil, who should beat them easily enough with that sort of play.

Course, the beauty of football - you never can know for sure.

I'll be cheering for Argentina, like I cheered for Brazil in the 2002 World Cup Final.

Cheers!

You know, I would love to see the german team win the World Cup, but to be honest, I don't think that they'll manage it. I believe that they have the chance to win against Argentina (the team was not too convincing, except in the very first games), but they won't survive the semifinal. And even if they do, they will have to play against Brazil (of which I'm rather sure), and they won't win against them.

Brazil's form has honestly not been great, not like last time when they were a shoe in. I'm picking Argentina to win the cup, so if Germany get past Argentina then I think they'll probably win overall - and the home advantage will surely help there.

I won't like it though.

Come on Argentina! All is forgiven! Except the bloody hand of god!

Complete madness. (And yes, Figo needed to be sent off.)

I shall have a wild guess and say more cards. We might've reached 20!

Yes, he did. Good grief.

I am disappointed/ The sooner England gets knocked out of the bloody world cup, the sooner those dumb car flags can come down. >:(

From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Well, Portugal could do it, as they did in the Euro. But that is by no means certain. So you may have to suffer those flags a while longer.

The Dutch fouled up some too, though. Both teams seemed to want to give nasty for nasty. Not pretty.

Though I'll agree Portugal did finish nastier. But the Dutch were certainly not innocent there.

FIFA's probably going to have a look at it all.

I love Figo and was for Portugal but that game had no winner. As I said elsewhere, I feel sorry for everyone involved in this match.

But I do hope against hope that Portugal beats England next. I can't stand Beckham and now that Owen's not playing, I don't care for a single English player.

Certainly did not reflect well on anyone, that game.

Heh. Well, I have no deep love for any of the players, but I'll cheer them out of anglo-love and a sense of ugh at Portugal. Sorry, but that game just left a foul taste in my mouth.

That was pretty spectacular in the HOLY SHITE YOU TEAMS ARE CRAZY AND HOW MUCH VODKA HAS THAT REF BEEN DRINKING department. (On another note, the US team fails to even win The Most Red Carded Players award, nor The Most Dramatic and Controversial Game award)

There's no way the English will lose. With the Portuguese team battered, yellow carded, red carded, injured, and whatnot--the fine and dandy, healthy Brits have a free ride whether they play blah or not.

Which would be a rather boring win.
Which is why I think I can be a pretty mean-spirited person because I think it would be interesting to see the Brits fail to win in some strange, morbid twist-of-fate that would break hearts all around the world. Unlikely to happen, but oh wow would that be an upset. It's just been difficult to be happy for the Brits with how they've been winning lately, but perhaps they'll charm me over next time around (finally!).

The Brits have managed to fail in twist-of-fate ways before, though. And didn't Portugal beat them in the Euro on penalties?

No, I am going with England.

Thank you for playing like the shits today, Holland and Portugal. And thank you too, OutForBlood!Ref. You have all just given England a fighting chance to get into semis.

I wonder what could've happened if it was Holland v Oz or Portugal v Oz instead. Given the Aussies' signature rough style of play, it would probably end up an absolute bloodbath. Corpses and dismembered body parts strewn all over the pitch, and all.

Date: 2006-06-26 12:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Hard to say. I do think this got as bad because the teams got very frustrated and angry with each other. The Aussies do play rough, but that doesn't mean they would've sparked off or gone into the same rage as these two teams.

As the newsreader put it this morning: This was not a game of football but a game of cards.

Whoa. What a game that was. I so don't think it's fair Portugal won, although the team stays around my town somewhere. I don't like them

Date: 2006-06-26 12:13 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Given how nasty it got, I don't think I'd been happy with either team, really. But the Netherlands did have the most effort in the second half and POrtugal was just a bit nastier in my view, but nothing about that game was fair.

Come on, England! Tea and politeness for the win!

Although all our players are getting injured, and Sven appears to have picked the squad by shutting his eyes and throwing darts at a board.

Whatever works, eh? It can sometimes be an advantage not to take it all out from the beginning, as it gets expressingly tough and the team with reserves to tap into is at an advantage.

We'll see.

Honestly? I'm glad the Netherlands' team lost. The Dutch have been playing nastily for some time - Davids probably showed them how. Maybe Van Basten should rethink some of his team's habits. And what they did with Ronaldo? Shameful.

Yeah, that did seem to set the tone? But Portugal sure as heck followed up. Naaasty.

I wanted both teams to get a kicking, really.
