Wherein Cam rants
Jul. 30th, 2006 06:37 pmFuckity fuck
Israel said it regretted the incident - but added that civilians had been warned to flee the village.
...
Now there's a comforting thing to put on their graves.
(And Hezbollah, don't try that martyr act on their behalf. Israel might be killing more people right now, but don't think for a moment most of the world don't realise you wouldn't do exactly the same if you had the same firepower as Israel. You're trying your best as it is. You have no moral high ground to stand on. Fuck off.)
Seriously, I think I'm running out of words. However, I'm sure I could find some if the leaders of Hezbollah, Israel, Syria, Iran, Hamas and the fucking "West" could be stuck in a room together and forced to STFU. How brave you are, some of you, playing political chess by launching rockets at civilians. I'm so impressed. Because nothing shows your might and determination like making children die. Nothing shows true courage like watching people die and suffer. Nothing is quite as impressive a good dick-measure contest with long range missiles. Oh yeah. Just so impressed, I am.
Why I'm using sarcasm when it's not really funny I don't know, but it's either that or apathy at the moment. What truly scares me, is that the longer this goes on, the more I'm thinking there actually is no solution to it. There's so many agendas at play and fucked if I know what's fair anymore. People not having to die would be a bloody good place to start, though.
Why are the simplest things always so hard?

Date: 2006-07-30 04:58 pm (UTC)bc most people are selfish and only think about themselves. i'm of the jack o'neill school of diplomacy. lock them all in a room until they come to some sort of compromise.
and people wonder why i'm a pacifist... and the really fucked up thing about it, is those on the front lines are trying to stop the same things from happening to their family.
it just sucks.

Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

Gotta go out and get those reds —
The only good commie is the one who's dead
And you know that peace can only be won
When we've blown 'em all to kingdom come.
Quite.

Date: 2006-07-30 07:02 pm (UTC)It is a sad commentary that what each side fighting seems to want in Lebanon, is simply that the other side cease to exist. It's very hard to talk compromise when the sides are so bent on destruction. It is also very hard to talk compromise when the sides don't fight each other equally. If a cease fire was to happen this very moment, would anyone from Hizbollah be held to account? They have always shown that they are unwilling to disarm, and they started the thing. So, the world holds Israel to account because they actually have an identified and standing army, regardless of who is right or wrong, they are the only ones who are known. It is right to be angry that Israel has mistakenly targeted a group that includes children, and their own apology rings totally hollow. Hizbollah on the other hand, doesn't apologize for anything. Indeed, they do not target anything. Their weapons have no guidance systems. They merely aim for Israel, and launch them. They have no interest who they kill as long as it is done. Is Israel held to a different standard, just because it can be? Hizbollah banks on that. There is no hope for their victory in battle, so the only possible reason for them to launch this war is to get a sympathetic world to punish Israel for responding. Hizbollah is willing to use the blood of their own people to make that happen. I don't agree with Israel's response, but I don't live there either. Hizbollah on the other hand is insane, but who will do anything about that? Syria and Iran of course will do nothing, since they profit in the conflict, and they are the only ones who can control Hizbollah. The US could probably try to pull Israel back, but I believe in this case, they might actually tell us to sod off, because they don't really need us that bad.
The world sits by the side unable to affect the outcomes directly [without starting a big war, that would result in even greater senseless killing] and the indirect methods aren't working either. Sadly the best method may be to simply ignore. To make Hizbollah think that there is nothing to be gained on the world stage. That Israel might root them all out and kill them all. Or perhaps Hizbollah is so far gone that they would simply fight to the last man, because they think so little of life. Seems like there isn't even the lesser of 2 evils to choose from...
One thing we CAN choose is to pay attention to other places where worldwide aid and opinion CAN make a difference. Especially in Africa. It is a very sad thing that 600 people have been killed in Lebanon. [I am religious, so I have prayed for them all, and that the hearts of those waging war would be softened and they would stop] However... in the Sudan nobody really knows how many have been killed in the last 2 years. Amnesty international is guessing at least 60,000 by direct violence and probably at least 70,000 by starvation due to displacement. Most people feel that the figure is more likely close to 300,000+ .
So where is the world's proportionate response to that? The UN. can't even agree that mass slaughter like that is genocide. 100 times more women and children have been killed in Darfur, but the interest in doing something is weak to nonexistant. These people weren't killed by the inhuman mechanization of rockets or explosives. They were killed individually, sometimes by people they knew. You would think that nothing would galvanize the international response like this, because there would definitely be an effect of having a response. But the world seems far more concerned with how a tiny little country conducts a police action against a terrorist group. Why is that?
All that said, I think those who have posted here know full well what is going on world wide, so my questions are not much more than ideas thrown out... But I myself have tried where I can to get coworkers and the like to at least think about a bigger picture... if I can just get one person to think a little, it's a good thing...

Date: 2006-07-30 08:44 pm (UTC)"We warned you" is no longer an excuse OR a softener for regret unless you personally pay for everything the people need to flee, absolutely guarantee their safety, AND rebuild their homes and guarantee that their lives will resume as normal when you're done screwing over their hometowns.
Though I'd say a better law would be: Treat ALL lives as "your peoples' lives" (and you'd better treat your peoples' lives well) and grow the fuck up.

Date: 2006-07-30 09:40 pm (UTC)I still don't really have anything to say, other than it really is an awful situation, isn't it? And it's nice for a change that not everyone is blaming solely Israel for what's going on. Not that they couldn't be handling it differently, but then I'm not really following it too much. I live in a hole that way.
Okay, I'll stop babbling now. I don't really have anything to say anyway... :)

Don't unlock the door until they've figured out how to implement world peace, and their plan's actually been tested and worked. Then ban 'em all from ever holding positions of influence again. They can go open an international delicatessen together somewhere, or something.

Did you see the frightened ones
Did you hear the falling bombs
Did you ever wonder
Why we had to run for shelter
When the promise of a brave new world
Unfurled beneath a clear blue sky
Goodbye, blue sky. We may see you again someday.
