Much ado about WTF, fandom and fic meme
Aug. 10th, 2006 08:09 amMum dragged me to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie yesterday, and we agreed it was a good watch, but the first was funnier.
Also, am I the only one in the world who does not lust Johnny Depp and/or Jack Sparrow? Because he really doesn't do much for me in that department.
First promo pictures for season three of Doctor Who
Obviously, spoilers if you haven't seen season two and heard the British media buzz. WTF, costume department? That suit is not that becoming in those pictures, oi. But Martha looks good. (I want her jacket. Yes.) But is it just me that finds promo pictures often rather silly due to the various poses they strike? It's all very "we are harcore, yo" sometimes. Okay, maybe just me.
I spy with my little eye DW Real Person Fic:
“I wish we had more scene’s like that.” Billie said quietly.
Will fandom embrace this and make it a trend, one wonders? (I used to get a bit wary around RPF - a lot of it related to tinhat experiences-, but you know fandom has mellowed me out when what makes me groan is the grammar.)
Follow-up on the Cassie Claire plagiarism debacle - Heidi plagiarism debacle. Oh dear. Oh deeeeear. This is certainly getting more involved by the minute. WTF, Harry Potter fandom? (Does make you wonder - how much is a fandom formed by its early BNF members? How much is it formed as a reaction to them? I wonder, I do.)
The WTF is high in this one as well
Sounds like it could be handy for performing abortions, and I'm sure a lot of us would be tempted to use such a device on those who deserve it.
... You know, I am rather strongly pro-choice, but that also means people should have a choice to attempt to carry their fetus to term if they so wish. (The body can be fairly cruel in that manner and not always give you a choice. Part of the reason I don't believe in life at conception - if you follow that, the human body is the most prolific abortion performer out there.) Also, "deserve" it? Charmed, I'm sure.
Finally, seems to be a new sort of "DVD commentary on fics" meme going about - where you do one on someone else's fic. If any feel like doing one of mine, I'd be all too flattered. Might be possible to arrange some sort of trade, too. You'll find examples of how it's done here.

Date: 2006-08-10 09:00 am (UTC)I'm not even in HP fandom; I don't interact with these people, but after all I have heard about Cassie and Heidi and Co., such news just fills me with the glee of Schadenfreude. Yes, I am mean.
(I have to say, though, that I don't believe it necessary to make MLA-style footnotes for every quote and allusion one borrows. I think that citing other books, screenplays or song lyrics without enumerating them in your disclaimer is fine up to a certain point and as long as you don't try to pass them off as your own when asked.)
And I'm not even going to comment at length on the "people deserving abortions" remark. It would only develop into a major rant, especially after I've taken a look at the user info and recent posts on

Date: 2006-08-10 11:16 am (UTC)(Depends a bit how you borrow, I think. And what - the more famous it is, the less you need to specify, me thinks. People will know the source material, so a general reference tends to do. At least in something as informal as fanfic.)

Date: 2006-08-10 09:15 am (UTC)And the childfree people? Should be shot. Seriously. The guy is proposing aggravated assault (for the death of the fetus) as well as giving the mother more health complications than you can think of, most likely including uterine cancer. Please, someone, just shoot the fucking nutjob already. Only consolation is that the science is so bad it's not happening anyway.

Date: 2006-08-10 11:32 am (UTC)Yeah, it looked like fairly wonky science. I mean, a "gun" like that would most likely kill cells in the mother too, in the process.

Date: 2006-08-10 10:26 am (UTC)Words also fail me on the remote-control abortion device, let alone the 'comments' on it. I'm so angry I had best hold my tongue. Suffice it to say it took nine years of trying and two failed pregnancies to get my daughter, and the idea that some psychotic arsehole thinks this is a good idea - to put a woman through that trauma - is sickening.
Did you get that link I sent you about the giant crabs of doom off the coast of Norway? I mean, I have never quite understood how I could be scared of spiders but not crabs, but those things are HUGE and would scare the willies out of me, frankly. Freaked me out just looking at the picture. O.o

It's the pinstripes or nothing, I say! Hey, it's a win-win situation. Mmmm, naked Ten...

Date: 2006-08-10 12:03 pm (UTC)So they changed the color? So what? The Third Doctor did it all the time, and the Fourth liked to play Fun With Coat Lengths. Hell, come to think of it, most of the Doctors changed around their signature look a little from time to time. I hesitate to say "all" only because I haven't seen 'em all, and there are many I haven't seen in a good, long time as well, so I may be forgetting things. However, messing around with The Look is a time-honored Who tradition. As far as I'm concerned, changing Ten's look a little is just another of those sweet little nods to the Old Skool that keep popping up all over the show. It's the best kind of Who continuity* I can think of.

o.O? Wtf? WTF?? WTF??? *tries to wrap brain around concept, fails, head explodes*

Some things, I just won't touch. Sorry.

3. I'm staying the hell out of the Harry Potter fandom. I'm not touching that with a 10 foot clown pole.

That, and I used all the energy for the abortion-gun thingy. Call me when I re-enter atmosphere. *livid.*

Date: 2006-08-10 01:07 pm (UTC)I must admit, I like the blue suit. Maybe I'm removed enough from it not to be sad for the loss of the stripes? And Martha looks interesting.
Abortion gun: sigh. I hate when I share opinions with loonies. I'd like to think these folks are just sharing frustrations. As someone who's chosen to be childfree, and is horrified by our ballooning population, I can see venting like this. But I'd never ever even consider doing it. Reality is not resolved this way. Or the pro-lifers would be locking up every woman of childbearing age and forcing them to "do the right thing".
no subject
Date: 2006-08-10 01:27 pm (UTC)If you're going to be horrified by ballooning population, the West wouldn't be my first worry, though. The child rates in Europe are so low it's actually somewhat of a worry, given the ageing population. If CF people are so keen on population getting under control, they should start supporting iniatives in poor countries that give sex-ed and advocate the use of condoms etc, not harass anyone pregnant.

I'm not involved in the Harry Potter fandom, and if I go by what I read, I don't want to be.

Date: 2006-08-11 12:13 am (UTC)I don't mind the new Doctor Who costumes at all really (and I'll be very interested to see what Martha is like) but at the moment my poor shallow little mind is still stuck on drooling over David Tennant in Girl in the Fireplace. It is a happy place.

Date: 2006-08-11 07:20 am (UTC)As for the abortion gun... well, this is why I'm reluctant to comment about being childfree by choice in public. I tend to get mistaken for one of these "all children are horrible and should be dead" nutbars. I'm actually okay with the idea of kids - I'm just not all that keen on the notion of me having any (too selfish to be a decent Mum - I'd resent giving up my life).
WRT to the new companion, it's just more of the New School paying credit to the Old School. Admittedly, this won't stop the 'shippers (nobody can stop the 'shippers) but Rose leaving won't be the end of the series.
