They've found "The Scream" and "Madonna"!

(If you haven't seen them, they look like this and this and were painted by Edvard Munch. They are considered masterpieces.)

They were stolen from the Munch museum two years ago. Apparently, they don't seem to have suffered any serious damage, so huzzah! Thieving paws *off* our national treasures, thank you very much.

Right on.

No doubt they'll be back under the same stringent security measures - a hand written sign saying "We'ed appreciate it if you didn't take these items home with you, please".

Good news, indeed! I just discussed The Scream with my students this past week, since they had to interpret the painting and different variations made of it. Now I can tell them the original painting's no longer missing. :)

Huzzah! It's taken'em a fair while to get them back - mind you, some artwork that gets nicked is lost for many many years.

I have to admit The Scream is my least favourite artwork: it creeps me out in a major way, but I can appreciate the artistry - and anyhow, thieving is always *wrong*

Indeed. They still have absolutely zero idea what happened to the stuff stolen from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, and that stuff's been missing for something like thirty years.

Makes me sad. =(

Man, I absolutely adored that place. It made me so sad when I heard it was looted. I used to go there as a kid on a frighteningly regular basis.

*cri*

I wonder if I am the only person in the world who likes Munch's Madonna better than the Scream? It is probably because The Scream is on every coffee mug every.

O.O I was listening to a Doctor Who audio today about an evil alien living in The Scream! Don't take it back, Munch museum, it EAT YOUR BRAINS!

I adore the Scream. I'm not a big art buff at all, but it's probably my all time favourite painting. I should buy a print for my bedroom, but I don't think it would go with my pink and white theme I have going on. There's an awesome scene in Batman 1989 where the Joker is trashing an art museum and won't let one of his goons ruin a Scream painting ("I kind of like this one") but they wreck everything else. :p

It's good that they found them. Stuff like that tends to be stolen to order so I never expected them to turn up ever again.

That's great news for you Norwegians (and us all, really)!

And it's funny, because they're some of those masterpieces from the Munch museum will be here in Mallorca from next week on (I won't be able to see them until Christmas, though).

Is it a sign of my immaturity that I giggled over the idea of a museum called Munch? yeah it probably is

Oh YAY!

You have to wonder what people are thinking, to steal something so famous as that. Were they just trying to get away with it? Did they have a buyer?

The world may never know.

Yay, I heard it on the radio today. So happy.

I'll have to dig up Monica Youn's Stealing the Scream poem, which was written about the first theft in the '90s (I believe).
