News and notes
Sep. 4th, 2006 01:29 pmNote to self: Do not go to football matches when rather sick. It makes it your own fault when you wake up in the morning and feel like shit. On the bright side, there was winning. Huzzah. (Then of course I woke up with the cat using my right foot as both pillow and mattress. At least the sting of blood circulation returning made me truly awake.)
Oh, and Sean Bean is in Norway. They're shooting a film called "True North" up north in our country and will be for the next months. Michelle Yeoh and Michelle Krusiec is also here for shooting. Neat as.
In Doctor Who news, cast additions are announced (Vaguely spoilerish, I guess.)
In 'What?' news, Steve Irwin is killed
Unfortunately, my first thought was "well, at least it wasn't a crocodile". Quite the way to go, though. Cripes. Um, yes. Poor family of his, though. I think his kids are fairly young and everything.
I've been to his zoo, actually, while I lived in Brisbane. It was quite educational. Bummer, seriously. Say what you like about him, he did passionately believe in conservation. I feel kinda sad, actually. Huh.
Meanwhile, the American ambassador is apparently displeased with what we do with our oil fund.
Whitney was careful to make his suggestions in a framework of open dialogue, and to emphasize that Norway must form Norwegian policy.
Gee, aren't you generous. At least he isn't like the last one, who pretty much threatened us over the Iraq war. It is interesting that this gets raised though - our oil fund (or "Government Pension Fund - Global" as it is officially called) is becoming quite huge. Given our oil reserves and increasing gas export, it'll keep on growing. So that the way we invest that money should be under constant review. I agree there. We are in a sense wielding some economic power. That should be done with care.
Of course, the reason we're excluding so many American companies is that US companies make up about half the investments and because the weapons-industry is as big as it is there, many companies have links to it. And that's an oil fund no-no. *pets Norwegian government* Let's keep it that way.
ligaras, got your cards. Thanks!
*raises an eyebrow*
My, my. That does confirm suspicions at the time, though. I see some anons are raising theories as to who it is. Possibly one of them who left a link in my LJ, hard to say. Hmm-hmm. Course, Google-fu did turn up some interesting stuff last time. Hmm-hmm the second. Ah, hatememes. It's like school all over again.
The principal would probably give us all detension.
In other news:
Suggestion to display Munch paintings 'as is'
US troops could face execution
Computer privacy tool is criticised for being adware
Qatar Airways to resume direct flights to Beirut
Situation in Gaza fairly dire
Sudan tells peacekeepers to leave Darfur (Sigh. I sense upcoming shit.)

Oh and why would your fics be on her bad list? I saw something about a Norwegian Journey, but that one rocks! They all do. I've seen that everyone on T&C is very nice and supportive, even when a fic isn't quite good, but all in all they give credit where credit is due.
Your fics are great, that's it, nough said.

Date: 2006-09-04 12:16 pm (UTC)*shrugs* To each their own taste, really. And everyone's entitled to raise critisism. Though it does perhaps help not to be all wanky about it. Eh well.

Date: 2006-09-04 12:06 pm (UTC)The only thing that occurs to me is that kind of mob cruelty one finds in school. A clique of girls will decide to brutalize someone for no reason at all other than to entertain themelves.
Margaret Atwood wrote book with one of the best descriptions of this kind of behavior I have ever read. Cat's Eye. Reading the scene in which the protagonist almost dies because of childish cruelty took my breath. I was a fat kid and the target of pointless mean-spiritedness for most of my childhood.
I can't say I would change that if I could: the person I am today is in part the result of surviving that. I would hope to save someone else from it, though. Perhaps that's why my all time favorie quote is from the song, "Hands" by Jewel: In the end, only kindness matters.

Date: 2006-09-04 12:08 pm (UTC)This entire badfic list thing was so incredibly childish I had no idea it could get any worse. Now it is just so damn hilarious I can't stop watching how someone so dumb tries to sound clever *shakes head*

I'm sure we haven't heard the last.

Date: 2006-09-04 12:12 pm (UTC)And dude, Steve Irwin's dead. That's just... some fundamental law of the universe just broke. That's like David Attenborough climing a Himalayan steppe and then falling off it. It's like the cast of Jackass doing a stunt with lighter fluid and then actually burning alive. Man.

And what's that about Sean Bean and Michelle Yeoh coming to Norway? Damn, why can't they shoot a movie in Southern Germany?

Date: 2006-09-04 12:35 pm (UTC)I saw it on the Norwegian news, or I'd link you to it. They're shooting up in MÃ¥lselv, apparently, and a bit on Svalbard. It's said to be a bit sci-fi-y.
If there's any reports from behind the scenes, I will pass it on.

Date: 2006-09-04 12:31 pm (UTC)What I really find odd is how some people just don't get you. I mean, of course there are people who don't like you (either as a person or as a writer), but it looks to me as if many simply don't understand you. Not that I'm an expert, but I've always thought you're very clear and upfront about who you are and what you do.
Btw, I just found out this morning that I've been friended by a Veronica Mars hatememe. Should I celebrate or what?

Date: 2006-09-04 01:01 pm (UTC)Steve Irwin dying is all kinds of weird; he's been crocodile hunting as long as I can remember. This isn't right. And who would have thought stingray, seriously?

Date: 2006-09-04 04:41 pm (UTC)Paranoia is always fun to see spread if you're of that mind, I suppose. Humans have always found fun in destruction as well as creation, and tearing stuff down. Humans or history or trees or whatever else. Seems to be an impulse.

Date: 2006-09-04 04:19 pm (UTC)Seriously? They don't have a cat to feed? Dishes to do? Lawn to mow? Scarf to knit? Belly button to contemplate?
That people *genuinely* put time and effort and actualy...emotion into these anon things and are genuinely gleeful over being infanitle and petty blows my mind.
The truly sad thing is, this behavior comes from older members of the fandom, not the zit-faced teenagers who cAn'T SpEl n Tawk IN 'NeTsPeAk.
Seriously, people...grow the hell up.

Date: 2006-09-04 04:26 pm (UTC)And, bejasus, it's your country's revenue. That means (althought this is lost on some people,) that you get to spend however you please. If Norway chooses not to do business with certain US firms, that is the Norwegian government's choice. Last time I checked, sovereign nations get to handle their own money. Sheesh!

Date: 2006-09-04 04:47 pm (UTC)Still, it quite is our money and the US ambassador publically "advising" us? Yeah, that'll go down well.

Date: 2006-09-04 09:45 pm (UTC)Is it sad that when I heard Steve Irwin was killed that I thought it had something to do with an alligator? I immediately thought that one had eaten him, and then it turned out it was another animal, how odd.

Date: 2006-09-05 02:46 am (UTC)I'm glad that you are able to let it roll off your back, but I can't let it go without saying, for the eight millionth time, that you're one of the most brilliant fanfic writers I've encountered. It's not sucking up, it's the honest truth. So I'm glad you can shrug off the antics of someone with too much time on their hands.
