Porn against character bashing!
Or some such. Character bashing makes Cam sad. And by that I don't mean character dislike, which is a different matter. You like what you like and dislike what you dislike, and indeed feel indifference often as well. Fair enough. But when dislike turns to vicious hatred and spending fanfic after fanfic (or other written media) subjecting the object of your dislike to humiliation and degration, maybe it's time to have a drink and get some sanity.
(Also, how you feel about the character, not how the other characters feel or other fans. It's not that hard to get, now is it? You might hate Sara/Catherine/Rose/Reinette/Meredith/Addison/Arwen etc, but that doesn't mean they're not liked at all by anybody ever. And it is possible to like a character and not want to her him/her. Similarly, it is possible to dislike someone without being OMG!jealous. Also, why are we hating on women so? Not pretty.)
Richard Hammond has asked charity be given instead of flowers and people seem to follow this. Aww. Sometimes, people are awesome.
Sometimes, people are not.
Terror suspects held in Norway. I read and boggle and shake my head. I mean, the American embassy is ugly as fuck, but it's moving soon enough, so fight back that irrational urge to flatten the eyesore.
I joke, of course. Because the thought of anyone planning terrorist attacks in Norway is surreal as fuck and I'm not sure how to react. (I'm almost inclined to believe the "loose talk" too. Odin knows I say I lot of shit that would qualify as "loose talk".) I mean, this is Norway. Decades pass between each time a police officer gets killed on duty here. We don't have the death penalty. We don't even have life in prison.
Then again, we thought we were all safe before WW2 and the Germans came invading then. I suppose you can never know. But still, terrorism just feels like something that would never happen here. Fingers crossed for it staying so.
Finally, there be wank over homosexuality and its causes.
Until science can figure out how to MAKE a homo baby, or negate homosexuality into hetero with genetic manipulation, I'd put the 'homo gene' on the back burner of junk science with a political spin. It's like evolution... a convenient theory, but no solid proof of what happened. Just a great hope that the theory IS the reality.
Hi. You're dumb. Please to be understanding how science work, mmkay?

Date: 2006-09-25 11:55 am (UTC)A) Young.
B) Have close connections with attractive/fangirled male characters.
C) Are either particularly attractive or important characters.
Case in point: Hermione, Ginny, Cho, Sara, Natalia, Cameron, Rose, Arwen.
All of them are young, have either had relationships with main male characters (or are close to them) and are important or conventionally attractive.
Then again, this is me and my nutjob theories, so who knows the real reason? (But you mark my words, when Nick's girlfriend appears on the next season of CSI, a bazillion fangirls will dissect her and deem her to be a "crappy" character.)
Ps. That penis restaurant is scary as hell.

Date: 2006-09-25 12:04 pm (UTC)As for gay Italians: incurable optimists, if they think they're going to get a more tolerant Vatican. Why, next thing you know, women will ask to be treated equally and be ordained priests! The nerve!
But yeah, Italy also legalized divorce and abortion, so it proves that the Vatican may think and what the Italian may want don't always coincide, thankfully.
Aah, wank over the causes of homosexuality... I'm hated by everybody, as I think it's a mix of nature and culture. *raises shield*

Date: 2006-09-25 12:14 pm (UTC)I couldn't disagree more with the Church on this matter, yet what really pisses me off are our politicians. As far as I know Italy is a democracy, not a theocracy, so they should let the Pope - or any other religious leader for that matter - talk all he wants while they do whatever is in the citizens' best interest. Like, protecting and extending their civil rights.
On a very different note...Tu quoque BBC? The Italian quote at the end of the page is horribly misspelt. *sigh*
Psst, I think you linked to the Norwegian version of the Aftenposten article.
The penis food article...I couldn't read it through. It made me very uneasy.

Date: 2006-09-25 12:23 pm (UTC)There are probably a few reasons at work, really. But it is interesting that it so often gets directed to females. With exceptions. (See Ron, Harmoanian treatment of.)

Date: 2006-09-25 12:28 pm (UTC)But of course, nothing's ever safe. Interestingly enough, they did a recent poll on how Norwegians and Norwegian muslims felt about the terror threat to Norway. 90% of muslims felt Norway was not a terrorist target. I forget the Norwegian number, but it wasn't that high at all.
Heh. I don't know what the cause is and I'm on the fence, but I do think there are possibilities for variation, you know? Not everyone is exclusively heterosexual or exclusively homosexual, while some are, so different factors may lead to different degrees. Much research to be done still. But that it also pops up in nature is to me a strong argument genetic or hormonal factors do play in.

Date: 2006-09-25 12:36 pm (UTC)And yeah, I wonder what directs the hatred towards female characters instead of males? Another thing I've noticed is that a lot of the hate comes from slashers (which then seems to generalise to all het.)
And poor Ron. He just can't win, can he?
