Kick my brain? And other notes.
Sep. 26th, 2006 10:57 amOr more particulary, the part of my brain that does the writing. It's been a bit lazy of late. So, I was thinking - give me a line from one of *your* fanfics you'd like to see in a story of mine. (You will of course be credited with its use if I do use it.) It doesn't have to be from a fandom I write in, though if names are mentioned, it is of course more convenient if it is.
Alternatively, if you're not a fanfic writer, get a line from another source, like a book. Or invent something ;)
Never know what will spark something.
Blah blah work.
Meanwhile, the Israeli ambassador has managed to piss off Norwegian Jews by critizing the Norwegian Royal family for "not being supportive enough" after the shooting against the synagogue. They feel she has no right to speak for Norwegian Jews, which does go to show Israel ain't quite the same as Jews everywhere. Not to mention that going after the Royal family in Norway is always a bad, bad idea. They are generally beloved and Norwegians can get quite fiercly protective.
Man, there are days I think foreigners here need a 'Guide to Norwegians' style thing with everything that isn't in the official guidebooks. Like how asking a Norwegian what they believe is considered almost rude unless you know them well and even then it's a fairly personal question, the concept of "dugnad" (basically, people getting together and doing stuff for free for the benefit of others or society in general. A collective effort for the common good, as it were. It differs from volunteerism in that it's non-organisational and task-specific), why we have two languages (goes all the way back to the Black Death, that) and have given up on joining them, why you do not attack the Royal family and why we have a love-hate relationship with the US and the EU.
Be fun to write, really.
I wish Grey's Anatomy season two was out on DVD already in Europe. I WANT. WHINE WHINE. I've even given in and uploaded some icons. Stupid addictive show.
Finally, 'aww' over Fudge the hamster's story.

Date: 2006-09-26 11:49 am (UTC)Blah work, indeed.
I have come up with two for you, so far:
1. He can’t help but tense the muscles in his jaw, knowing this is an indulgence he can no longer allow himself. He should never have allowed it in the first place, but the stakes were not so high at first, and he’d been a more selfish man, then.
2. He closes his eyes as she kisses him, and knowing it must be the last time, he almost allows it to consume him. Finally, she rolls away from him, and both begin to silently gather their clothes.
They are from a Snape/Lily fic that will probably never be finished. Use one or both if the mood takes you. ;)

Date: 2006-09-26 12:00 pm (UTC)And I'd be very interested to have a genuine Norwegian guidebook. I don't know much about Norway (although I am learning quite a lot about Slovakia, courtesy of having a Slovakian friend this semester) and it's always fun to learn about other countries.

Date: 2006-09-26 12:33 pm (UTC)Anyway - Odd Børretzen wrote a book called "How to understand and use a Norwegian": http://www.cappelen.no/main/katalog.aspx?f=1105&isbn=8202230195 Which has its points... Funny, self-deprecating book.
And you never insult the royal family as a foreigner, never. Norwegians might do it, but it is mostly tongue-in-cheek stuff... mostly.
no subject
Date: 2006-09-26 07:36 pm (UTC)Heh. I think Norwegians feel free to lightly mock as a sign of love, but when foreigners do it, it tends to be seen as critisism.

Date: 2006-09-26 12:34 pm (UTC)Which is far from being a very good line, but it's one of the few I've written which is less than fifty words long. (That probably says a lot about my writing habits.)
Alternatively, there is always the rather awesome T. S. Eliot line 'the clock has stopped in the dark', which has been nagging at me to write it into Doctor Who fic for a while now.

Date: 2006-09-26 07:37 pm (UTC)The T.S Eliot line is very evocative, particulary concerning the nature of Time Lords. Humhum.

Date: 2006-09-26 01:39 pm (UTC)That's from Encounter in Sue Minor: Shuichi, which is a Yu Yu Hakusho* fic that will most likely never be finished. Actually, I'd had the vague idea to make Encounter in Sue Minor a massive observational crossover metafic series, but that's unlikely to happen, either. Anyway, I like the line and I think you can turn it into whatever you like, so there it is.
Also, you should totally write the Guide to Norwegians. It sounds like an awesome read.

-Nine hundred year old Time Lords know how to make a woman scream. He'd been sure she'd screamed so loudly that Jack would come running. Jack didn't, and Rose eventually took the opportunity to pull some rather loud noises out of him as well.
-"Oi!" That does it. One mention of Jacqueline Andrea Suzette Prentice Tyler and his penis deflates like a flan in the cupboard. He jumps to his feet and scowls at her. "That was not fair."

Date: 2006-09-26 04:50 pm (UTC)Fic lines... interesting challenge, both in finding something that might even vaguely spark interest in your brain and be a bit more challenging/intriguing than a straight shippy line. But I chose this:
It's supposed to represent a family, and in a way [she] can't help but feel that's appropriate. The family [he] doesn't have on Earth; the family [she] wants him to feel that he does have.
It's from a Lois and Clark fic of mine called Lonely This Christmas, though the source is hardly important.

I totally agree on your idea of "Guide to *add your nationality here*". We keep getting Erasmus/exchange students who are totally shocked to discover that people in Barcelona don't speak Spanish on a daily basis (and lessons are not taught in Spanish). Same with the variety of cultures within the country, because some people think we all dance flamenco and eat paella.
no subject
Date: 2006-09-26 07:52 pm (UTC)Heh. I'm sure some Norwegians think that too, but since quite a few Norwegians buy houses down there when they retire, we have a bit more cultural exchange with Spain than we would otherwise. We learn.

Just drop those thoughts behind you now.
Change your mind.
