And then shit hit the fan in CSI fandom.
A spoiler saying Grissom and Sara will kiss gets posted at YTDAW, and many are very happy. Many are not.
A GCR fan takes the spoiler to a writer for the show:
This is from David Rambo, he did not categorically deny the GSR kissing rumor/spoilers, but he did say thats its the first time that he's heard of the GSR kissing rumors:
"Thanks for alerting me to this -- first I've heard of it. Unfortunately, anyone can say they're a member of the CSI crew on the internet, and I can assure you that this item did not come from one of our crew. It's obviously from someone with no inside knowledge of the show.
I hope you'll keep watching throughout this season. We've got some of the strongest scripts ever, and finest performances CSI: has ever had. Everyone involved -- crew, actors, producers, writers -- has a renewed energy for the show, and I think it's visible onscreen. Tonight's episode (in the US), "Fannysmackin'" is destined to be a CSI: classic. Hope you enjoy it.
David Rambo"
GSRers are not so happy:
Can someone please explain to me who thinks it's a good idea to take the spoilers we get here and then email someone at the show about them? We aren't supposed to know about certain things, yet we are priviledged with the information and I am having a hard time grasping the concept of why someone would say something that could ruin it for us. And I'm not even saying this as a GSR shipper. It's more about respect. If you don't like GSR, that's your own opinion, but I'm fairly certain that if someone was telling spoilers about another ship, people wouldn't like it if we said bad things about it. Plus, spoilers come out for all sorts of things, so why in the hell would someone want to ruin that? If people don't like CSI, that is fine, but we don't go to their sites and complain about their shows.
Some on the other side of the fence don't see the big deal: (Various reactions from GCR sites.)
That'll teach them for getting so excited about a spoiler. I know I've been burned bad by them before. I've learned my lesson, for the most part.
Besides - if this "source" could get in trouble for what they were posting, why should we feel sorry if they get caught? They knew what they were doing was wrong.
It sounds like they're just trying to make us feel bad for having a problem with their ship.
Some see a small deal:
... but sometimes you gotta do something that isn't necessarily "right" to enjoy your life, or in this case, get those extra treats that only the online fans get. I kinda feel bad. Isn't the person who gave out spoilers kinda screwed now?
Consequences occur:
While David Rambo answering fans has been great and fun for everyone involved, it's caused a shit storm for me behind the scenes. The information chain has become a circle. Now, anytime I post information a faction of fandom doesn't like, anyone can e-mail David Rambo and ask whether or not it's true. That they can or do ask is not the problem, and I don't have a problem with how he responded in the e-mail - the problem is that these sources who provide information are real fucking people, with jobs, with expenses and lives that cannot be threatened by giving me information to post on a fan site.
The antis often forget that this is a fucking television show and that this fandom is not real life. No matter how much we may obsess, theorize, and love these characters this is just a television show. However, the sources that have provided information have real lives connected to this, and with Grillows folks running to David Rambo for confirmation, a line has been crossed. The line between this fandom and other people's real lives (including my own). So, because of this, I will not be providing any more spoiler information for YTDaW.(...)
Lastly, whatever information Gibby is able to spoil in the future, I would encourage the members here to not flaunt it in the face of the anti-GSR crowd. That, in my opinion, has been a huge source of friction in the fandom. Now, of course we know they lurk here, but there's no reason to antagonize them with spoilers. They're already on edge with the GSR being canon.
My advice is for people to stay on their side of the fence. I don't want there to be any backlash, and I don't want people running over there in a posting frenzy. Most of the time I stay on this side of things because I don't want to cause a problem. Recently Gibby and I tried to address a very serious accusation as it pertains to this site (non-spoiler related), and it was not well-received even though we were extremely polite and respectful in the face of insults and outrageous claims. So, please, certainly feel free to question the validity of my information, but lets not have a fandom war over this. The truth or not about what I've said will or will not be proved over time. The GSR is great this season and I encourage everyone to enjoy the reason why they're a part of fandom in the first place.
GSRers become even less happy:
I guess all the antis who lurk here and those who post here, shamelessly impersonating GSR shippers, for the sole purpose of getting spoilers only got what they deserved. No more spoilers is better than misused spoilers. It’s not fair that the genuine GSR shippers who visit this forum every day with a legitimate interest have to be punished because of the unbecoming conduct of a handful of ungrateful and deceiving a**holes but I support your decision.
A GCRer brings the fight to YTDAW:
Why is it okay for all you GSR fans to write emails to David Rambo or to TPTB, but when other fans(shippers, slashers) write him something then we are whiners?
And GSRers respond:
I don't think she meant other shippers in general. I'm sure GSRs have written to him to whine, but in this particular case someone violated a code of conduct simply because they didn't like a fictional storyline, and that act has caused them to ruin something for a large group of people, and potentially threaten the job of someone else in the long-run.
Had a GSR written in with that question, I think you would see a similar reaction. Also, the person who wrote in accused mystery of getting her spoilers in ill-gotten ways (they kindly refer to it as dumpster-diving for scripts), so she also slandered the person who got her the spoiler.
This goes beyond who ships what. The fictional needs to take a backseat to real life right now.
I'm sure it won't end there.
So, what be you thinking? Did someone do a fandom wrong, or is it all whinging? Is it both or neither? Is it all AHAHAHAHA WANK? Is a spoiler fair game for whatever use when it's been passed on to the "fandom public domain"? Or should some unwritten rules apply? Is this the start of fandom war? And does your ship preference make you biased in this case? (If you have one, that is.)
The floor is yours, so opine away. The kangaroo court is in session. Don't bring wank in the comments or I will VIKING SMASH you. Drinks will be served afterwards in the wankshelter.
In other corners of the fandom...
Just because they were in a bedroom and she was in a robe doesn't mean they're shagging!:
You have irrefutable proof that Sara is having sex (sleeping) with Grissom? Darn it, I must have missed that episode. In fact, other than that final scene from last season that was just a tantalizing tease that could be taken many ways, I've seen absolutely no evidence of any romantic involvement between the two of them. Of course, I'm not into the whole GSR scene and don't pay any attention to spoilers.
GSR - ethically and morally wrong:
grissom complained to catherine about her ethics when she told him about the money from sam braun. so how come he has forgotten about ethics now, it just doesnt make sense. the writers should be made to watch all of the previous seasons then they could see why so many people think this gsr stuff is just not right, morally or ethically. grissom and catherine all the way!
Sara is totally a lesbian:
Well, that scene of Sara in the tank top, kicking the crap out of that dummy with her kickass boots, wearing her beaded choker necklace and showing off her powerful looking shoulders certainly confirmed her complete heterosexuality to me! Yep. Uh huh. Sure did.
Sara is totally not:
Sorry but after forty plus years of being required to smile at stereotyping even when you can sense the less-than-friendly digs beneath the "fun" my sense of humour is on permanent hiatus.
If the "humour" in question was regarding Warrick and contained references to watermelon and soft-shoe-shuffle and "massa" would it be funny?? Would I laugh??
Damn right I would not.
Sara is a powerful, fit, strong, heterosexual (and damned hot!!) woman. And that's what she looks like - a woman who is not afraid to look strong.
And here I was thinking it might've calmed down. HAH.
CSI wankimplosion so deserves commemorative icons. The batshit has been strong, the wank mighty. Sadly, there's also been the downright nasty. Shipping. Serious business, yo.

And yeah the entire summer was wankalicious, mostly amusing and groan-worthy (not in the good way), but it's well known that YTDAW is the home of the GSR crowd. Why come over when you know the spoilers you find will not be what you're looking for? It annoys me when people do such stupid things and make life difficult everyone else.

Date: 2006-10-16 10:25 pm (UTC)I do think the person (people?) who wrote to Rambo should have thought ahead a bit because of the possible consequences for the person providing spoilers. The comment about "they knew what they were doing was wrong anyway" doesn't sound right to me. The person probably thought they were just doing dedicated fans a favor and never imagined there could be a possibly strong backlash.
I admit to being all for the GSR, but I think things need to be kept in perspective. It is a fictional tv show after all.
But then again...my mom has always said that she feels Grissom and Catherine would be a good couple. Should I go slap my mom around a bit because I'm GSR? Yes, yes I shall.

The girl wrote him just as many fans did and I don't think she did anything wrong. True, people might get demoted or even lose their jobs for that matter, but really, if you are not allowed to do that, don't do it. If you do, you are responsible for what you get. Even if this girl didn't email Rambo, someone else would do it sooner or later. It's inevitable. Also, why would someone risk other people's jobs to give out spoilers? Is the girl who wrote Rambo selfish? Maybe, but I don't think she's the only one. I, for one, don't go to YTDAW at all and I'm happy about that. Ah I miss the good old spoiler-free days.
