Thank you sincerely to everyone who commented on my last post. It's good to see a little compassion and human decency now and then. A particulary thanks to those who shared their stories - there is a sort of comfort in knowing you're not the only one.

So in Norway we've been talking a bit about this now solved murder case. Several reasons for that, of course. The statue of limitations has passed on it, and the guy who did it was only 13 when he committed the act. For these reasons, his name has been kept out of the media as well.

Now it is revealed that gossip mag Se & Hør apparently offered 100,000 NOK for the guy to come forward and tell his story. If you're used to English tabloids, you might not think it particulary shocking and just shrug your shoulders. Here, a lot of people find it rather revolting. Me included. (Bite me, Se & Hør.) And yet, I know I shouldn't really be surprised.

It occurs to me sometimes how naive my country is - and how we've made a whole society out of it.

In other notes, fandom and life:

- I'm having lines to a Martha/Doctor Martha/Doctor fic (don't ask, it's involved) in my head and I didn't invite them in. I blame the BBC.

- CSI spoilers for the finale has made me fill up the Wankshelter and add another layer of concrete padding. Holy wank potential, Batman.

- Debate in France over remarks on paedophiles. Err, yeah. Perhaps not the smartest - or most insightful - thing to say there.

- Norwegian politicians are so cute when they fight. Or possibly there's something wrong with me finding them so. Or maybe I'm just glad Norwegian politics isn't that nasty, thus feeling an urge to pet it like a little kitten. Or something.

- Aww, my firstet ever online fandom wanks. It occurs to me that in some ways, it hasn't changed since the... Oi, almost ten years since I was in it. Cripes.

- I feel old now.

Finally, because I did laugh:
--Go to Google.com
--Click on Maps.
--Click on "get Directions".
--From New York
--To Oslo (Was Paris, I changed it. Shut up.)

--And read line # 23.

If you laugh, repost this.

Here in the states, there are often laws designed to prevent murderers/rapists from profiting by selling their 'story' to publishers. It doesn't prevent the books from being written, it just makes all proceeds go to the victim (or the victim's estate).

The Son-of-Sam law, right?

We haven't really had to deal with that problem in Norway. Don't have that many murders to begin with, and a different media picture.

"Debate in France over remarks on paedophiles. Err, yeah. Perhaps not the smartest - or most insightful - thing to say there."

I don't think Sarkozy is entirely incorrect. Granted, he probably shouldn't be talking about the genetics of pedophelia - particularly during an election; however, his comment that, "it's also a problem that we don't know how to treat this pathology," IMHO is right on the mark.

Yeah, maybe I'm strange, but I don't find what he said offensive at all. I'm willing to believe in the possibility that paedophilia is a born neuro-psychological disorder. And ditto what you said about his pathology comment.

I don't think that is all it is. And to reduce it to just genetics, it becomes a bit... "Hey, some people are just born criminal, if we detemine who we can just lock them away and problem solved!" to me. Like serial killers, I do believe there can often be something not quite right in the mind, but I don't think every Catholic priest involved in paedophilia were necessarily born that way, for instance. There is research that indicates that sexuality can change with circumstances. Some child abusers were abused themselves - I don't think they just inherited a bad gene.

It just becomes too simple and I tend to be very wary of simple explanations sometimes. (And I am way, way wary of anything that absolves society of all guilt.)

Now, now, it would be people coming to me who had to be good at swimming :P

Weee...that'd be quite the swim. :-) Too bad it only works for European cities and you always have to swim to France then drive everywhere else.

Yeah, I'd think it would be faster - if colder - to swim via Iceland and straight for Norway.

Hee. Until the line 23 part (which, giggle), those directions are pretty much how you get from my job to my mother's house :)

So should one expect much traffic on this route, then? :P

Nah. S'just the Northeast Corridor. So long as you don't get stuck in Hartford, CT (which everyone does--insurance capital of the world), NYC to Boston should take 4.5ish hours.

This does beg the question though: how long would it take a human to swim from Boston Harbor to The Northwest coast of France? Ya know, if there weren't 50 foot swells and it wasn't cold.

Expect me in 30 days, apparently google thinks I'm a pretty fast swimmer.

Ah wank. I await the meltdown.

Can I give you a Dr. Who plot bunny. I've tried writing it but my Whoness is not up to par. It's a very nice bunny and doesn't widdle on the carpet.

From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
That would depend. Is it the kind of bunny who would get along with my ship-inclined nature and general Norwegianness?

Yes. I think it would.

It's the Doctor meets a version of himself who went mad after the Time War.

Swim?!?! Well, not with my bad knee, I'm not! That'd be a cold swim too. I saw TITANIC! I know how cold the Alantic is over there! *shakes fist!*

Nah. I'll fly, if it's all the same to you. ;)

I'm having lines to a Martha/Doctor Martha/Doctor fic (don't ask, it's involved) in my head and I didn't invite them in.

Well, now that they're there is there anything I can do to help them be brought to light? You need to feed my new-found obsession as you are to blame for its extistence because the lack of good Martha fic makes me terribly sad.
