Dear CSI and Doctor Who fandom (not for the first time),
It is in fact possible to like two women on a show, even if they are quite different. No, really. It is possible to appreciate more than one kind of personality. It is possible to think two women are quite smashing, both of them, and this regardless of what your shipping preferences is. Because a woman needn't be teamed with a guy to be awesome. (That's not to say being with a guy necessarily robs her of awesomeness either.)
So, I can like Grissom/Sara and still find Lady Heather an intriguing character. I can like Doctor/Rose and still find Martha made of win. I can like Doctor/Martha and still think fondly of Rose. I can eat strawberry ice cream and still think vanilla is quite all right. It might not be my favourite, but that doesn't make vanilla a total slut who's just there to make strawberry look good.
Now, it's never fun to see your ship end on some really appaling Norwegian*, but such is life and such fanfic doesn't have to be and write them porns, baby. But please don't turn fandom into a battleground where if you like Sara, you hate Catherine, if you like Martha, you hate Rose or vice versa times two. Quite frankly, basing your dislike on a character because she gets in the way of your ship can get oh so very lame. No, it's not any better when you're passive aggressive about it rather than blatant. The blatant bashing is just more instantly annoying.**
And hey, you can always embrace the OT3.***
*THIS STILL ANNOYS ME. "Dårlig ulv" is not "Bad wolf" in that context, ARGH.
**Not that you have to like every character ever. Everyone's got their tastes. But it's possible to be sane about your dislike and not actually turn into a rabid attackdog that at the same time bitches about everyone hating on your favourite character.
***This is not at all related to my writing assignment for the Martha and Rose ficathon that I have high plotty threesome hopes for. Not at all.
In other news (fandom and otherwise):
-
lotus79,
gabesaunt and myself are plotting stuff for
time_and_chips which hopefully will be fun and positive. Bit tired of blah blah negativity and hatememes and grudge ladida abouts.
- Cam should write Ten/Martha fic simply named "Stuff", Y/N? I could write Doctor/Rose too, but feeling the lack of a proper challenge. Blah. Also need to get me a Ten/Martha hug icon with "stuff" on. Because heh.
- Speaking of Doctor Who, I liked the last episode. But the monster was very silly. This was made up for by stuff, hugging and angst. Also OMG TRAILER.
-I got half a CSI fic for post-season seven finale in my head, but feeling a bit hesistant to write. Mostly because it'll be based around getting over something traumatic happening to you, which no doubt will be inspired by personal experience. Kinda want to write it and kinda not. Guess we'll see.
- Speaking of CSI fandom, the wankshelter is fully stocked for the next episodes. Because OMG WANK POTENTIAL.
- Raided last night with the guild. We downed three bosses and I got my first epic gear. Whee. The joy of downing a boss after so much hard trying is like... Well, decent sex, anyway. (Very, very few things in life beat brilliant sex.) But so tired today as a result. Zombie!Cam returns.
- Tromsø won their match 4-1 last night. AHAHAHAHA.
- This week is Eurosong. This is of course a happening of vital importance. Who's up for some LJ snarking during the event? There are few things as brilliant and the combined awesomeness and horridness that is Eurosong. I love it with all my childish glee and bitter adultness.Though Norway's entry this year sucks and blows. BRING IT ON EUROPE.

Date: 2007-05-07 10:16 am (UTC)Personally, I find that strawberry gets cloying after a couple of bites -- unless it has chocolate, which provides the perfect contrast.
I suppose this is a metaphor for how I should be shipping Martha/Rose.

Aww, how about the best approach, if you ignore it, it may go away,I don't think it's the first time the translations have been wrong, I think the BBC need to pay their translators more.
"Who's up for some LJ snarking during the event?"
Me! Me! That show is the best in the worst possible way.
"Though Norway's entry this year sucks and blows",
Have you seen the UK one? IT BURNS! We always suck though, the whole tournament is politics anyway, the only people who give us any points on the irish, it's that bad. heh.

Date: 2007-05-07 11:15 am (UTC)I can't ignore it - for one thing, half the post-Doomsday fics out there reference it, heh. And also I like to annoy myself.
I would totally translate for the BBC for free, though.
I haven't seen the UK one yet. Is it worse than last year's? If so, I may have to have earplugs on the ready.
Icons?

Date: 2007-05-07 12:23 pm (UTC)I've already seen most songs on the preview thingie, but of course there's always a huge difference in videos and live performances.

Date: 2007-05-07 12:30 pm (UTC)I saw a couple of the songs - and then decided that I'd much rather wait for the real thing.
It's very odd, but despite the mockability involved, I always manage to find at least a couple of songs that stick to the brain. Lordi last year, as well as the Danish entry.

Date: 2007-05-07 12:36 pm (UTC)The mockability is just as much in the costumes, the scene shows and the appaling English of the hosts.

It will be interesting to see how Finland measures up.

Tromsø won their match 4-1 last night. AHAHAHAHA.
-YAY! for Tromsø :D You know I never got to feel like I had to cheer a specific team on...you would think I'd be a Kanarifan, but...
This week is Eurosong...
Though Norway's entry this year sucks and blows.-YAY again...or not.

Date: 2007-05-07 12:27 pm (UTC)I am good. Have sadly gotten addicted to World of Warcraft, but you'll learn to just ignore my posts on that like the rest ;)
Actually, if Lillestrøm wins their match today, they'll be top of the league all by themselves. So perhaps this is the year to cheer them.
Eurosong is yay even when Norway sucks. It's all about the laughing and seeing who gives points to who.

Date: 2007-05-07 12:40 pm (UTC)Life's been pretty good, moving has been even better - although I am currently living in the midst of a gazillion boxes...which is prooving rather dangerous. Moving the equine this weekend and then I'll be all settled in (sort of).
-World of Warcraft?
Huh, gonna have to read up on that.
Glad you're doing well and I will go look for somewhere to stream the awesomeness that is Eurosong...the sound on my laptop is erratic these days anyway, so I may luck out! Oh wait, don't they broadcast on the radio as well, I can stream that for sure I think?
:D

Date: 2007-05-07 01:04 pm (UTC)World of Warcraft is an online game where you play with other online players. Read more here. It's extremely addictive and loads of fun.
Eurosong is also broadcasted on NRK radio, yes. So you should be able to listen in. BBC also broadacasts on both radio and TV, I think.

Date: 2007-05-07 12:08 pm (UTC)I squeed at that line because it IS a reference to the 9th Doctor, but it's not a OMG special thing. That's like freaking out if the 10th Doctor mentioned dancing or a bananna to Martha. Jeez...
Yeah, I think you should write a Doctor/Martha fic. That would be good.
I need a drink from the Wankshelter... something fruity with a splash of vodka.

Date: 2007-05-07 12:30 pm (UTC)I'm sure I will write more eventually, anyway. I am always drawn to shiny new things.
Drink coming up - with umbrella in, for jamming into your eyes if you need.

Date: 2007-05-07 12:09 pm (UTC)But yes, snarking will be pretty much inevitable no matter what, heh.

Date: 2007-05-07 12:33 pm (UTC)There's always at least one entry that sucks beyond did-anyone-with-ears-vote-for-this?! belief, I find.

Date: 2007-05-07 12:35 pm (UTC)I know!! I realise that they wanted the Dalek/Dårlig (or Dalig, I think they were saying) connection, but it's still just plain bad research. *So* annoying...
Who's up for some LJ snarking during the event?
I'd love to, except that I'll be snarking live with my mum and we have no wireless in the living room. It's an annual event for us, and as long as Jostein Pedersen is doing the commentary it can't be anything but
crackfun. As for the song... well, at least she can stay in tune. Sort of. Some of our other contestants really couldn't. I just don't understand how the jury manages to pick all these rubbish finalists - does that mean that the other contributions were worse?
no subject
Date: 2007-05-07 12:50 pm (UTC)as long as Jostein Pedersen is doing the commentary it can't be anything but
crackfun. He's not doing it this year. Woe is us. We've lost the snark.
I find it doesn't bear to think about the sort of songs that were rejected for the Norwegian semi-finals. The ones that made it were bad enough. Think there was really only two I could tolerate. Ugh.
On the bright side, since I expect the worst, I shan't be disappointed.

Date: 2007-05-07 02:08 pm (UTC)But "dårlig ulv" just has be imagine a wolf that got really sick all over the beach.
Bad wolf! Now you won't get any treats tonight!
Maybe that last rift was a side-effect of Bad Wolf vomit? He's not? Aaaww... :~(

And I love Martha and didn't really care for Rose by the end of her run--but don't understand Rose-bashing (or other character-bashing) at all (well, except on an individual, just-for-talking's sake-in-one's-personal-journal-basis). WTF? Let people have their fun with the show! It's their show to enjoy as much as it is yours!
I don't suppose pretending the bad translation of "Bay of Bad Wolves," could refer to a pack of wolves that once starved on the beach and rotted there and spoiled the water or something would help, would it?

Date: 2007-05-09 07:20 pm (UTC)I shipped Doctor/Rose fiercely (although I maintain that the dynamic changed after Ten appeared) and I'm now shipping Martha/Doctor.
It is frustrating, though, that nobody's writing fic about Martha! Well, they are, but it's all "Martha's in it for two pages until Rose and the Doctor hook up..." *sigh* Not what I want. I'd like some good Martha/Doctor smut, or a reunion fic where Martha and Rose like each other - maybe more than they like the Doctor!
*holds out hope for the Martha/Rose ficathon*
