Lastest BSG, as watched by yours truly
Jun. 7th, 2008 04:06 pmDamn! Last week felt a bit filler, but this was definitely not.
What did you other BSG watchers out there think?
Next week: OH HOLY SHIT. And HOLY SHIT THE SECOND.
Later today: Doctor Who fandom will surely try to kill Cam's good mood. Stayed tuned for the epic battle.
Also later today: EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP WHOO.
- This episode had some really good lines. From Baltar and Laura's attempts to talk to the hybrid, to the "if you're my subconscious, you are a bit full of myself" and the "you didn't marry the whole production line" and Baltar's attempts to talk to the centurion. I sniggered.
- Oh, the Eights. From the rebel!Eight who had acessed Athena's memories and seem to give Helo a few realisations about marrying a Cylon to Boomer's leaving when Calvin got choked by D'Anna. Distracted by something shiny indeed. The Eights need spine, but sometimes it seems like they keep looking for something outside themselves to build it. Athena's made one out of humanity, but can it really hold? And Boomer, was that the last we saw of her?
- Poor Pike, dying to become a past episode's plot point.
- For such a vital structure, the Hub sure went down fast. Then again, with the constant jumping, maybe the Cylons just didn't think it in danger. Pretty death, reminding me of a phoenix, except one that is now dead for good.
- Space!porn was shiny.
- Now Cylons are mortal - does it mean they must show themselves 'worthy' of survival too?
- Cylon/human joined future now seems more and more likely. Yet I wonder. What does all this mean for the prophecies? I wonder. As the Babylon 5 quote goes, "Prophecies are poor guide to the future. You only understand it when the events are already upon you".
- D'Anna is her scheming, charming self. Aww. Welcome back!
- Baltar is a big tool with stupidity to match. And yet. Lots of funny moment from him, but for all his brain, he sure manages to pack the idiocy. That could have been another Cylon civil war with a third party involved. Then his reveal to Laura, and his 'please', which did rather break me a bit. All this talk about worthy of survival or worthy of life, as it really is, makes me wonder if half the point is that we all are or we none are.
- Laura's visions were a bit A Battlestar Carol. But nicely acted, and Kara and Lee's presence did build on the idea of the extended Adama family. And Bill, oh Bill in Laura's visions. With the ring, and the kiss, and the 'you rest now' and EJO's acting broke me a little. Elosha actually verbally smacking Laura a bit was nice as well. I love the character, but we all need someone who does that to us sometimes. Especially leaders.
- I don't always like Baltar, but man was it good he didn't die. For all his warped 'I was just the storm' get-out-of-jail-free card, he does actually have a point. Sometimes, going on hating and going on blaming costs too much of what is good about yourself. Laura really did look into the abyss there for a moment.
- Hey, I saw Orion's belt! They're definitely getting closer to Earth.
- Last scene. GUH. Oi, I wibbled. No surprise, I am a sap, but of all the scenes I've gone sappy over, that one still stands out. First off, seeing Bill seeing the basestar (gotten slightly unbuttoned and comfortable waiting, I noticed) and just so-very-careful expression on his face that moment. And her being alone to greet him, not managing to say anything at first. (You can see she tries a few times.) The look on his face is just so soft it kills when he finally sees her again and how much do I love they can't even form full senteces or look away? "Missed you." "You too." "Love you." "About time." And his first very careful hug, and her much fiercer second, clinging to him. Damn, it killed me a little. Supremely acted, I have to say. Emotionally satisfying - but I still want proper kissing at some point. Oi, SciFi, kissing isn't just hot when it's with young 'uns, I'm just saying. Man, how did I get so into this pairing? Oh wait, because they're awesome.

Date: 2008-06-07 02:11 pm (UTC)And I have vodka. Vodka is good. But not too much.
Also, sweet corn is surprisingly tasty when half-pissed. Hmmm.
Oi, SciFi, kissing isn't just hot when it's with young 'uns, I'm just saying
Uh-uh. Do not agree. And I'm older than you, nyer!

Date: 2008-06-07 02:19 pm (UTC)You're not going to be just half-pissed if you keep this up.
Hey, young 'uns kissing can be hot too, I'm just saying it's not the only thing that is. Or are you going to be ageist perv on me?

Next week: ZOMG. *flail*
I'm worried for DW today. =/
Euro 2008. Meh. No england. So no one here will watch. We're self-obsessed like that. LOL. Who should I support then?? :P

Date: 2008-06-07 02:37 pm (UTC)I got a bit teary myself. Damn show. The 'you go now' really, really resonated, because I remember watching my grandmother waste away from cancer and there's something about that wanting to have a loved one with you and watching them suffer at the same time that is just... Yeah, that got me.
And of course the last scene.

Date: 2008-06-07 02:38 pm (UTC)Oh, that last scene... I'm currently capping it like a maniac.

Date: 2008-06-07 02:38 pm (UTC)Also, I think I misread what you said (well, the words wouldn't stay still on the screen, can you blame me?) I read "just isn't hot" when you said "isn't just hot". Funny how switching two words makes such a difference.

Date: 2008-06-07 02:41 pm (UTC)Next week worries me a great deal. Oi.
But I am determined not to let DW get me down. So there.
And Norway's not in it either, and I manage to watch still. You silly English :P Cheer Sweden, they're representing Scandinavia this year.

Date: 2008-06-07 02:47 pm (UTC)Yeah. Bill is gonna lose his shit with Tigh me thinks. =/
Yes! Good attitude!! I heard there's some sort of huge reveal regarding River Song and the Doctor's future right at the end. I am prepared to go crazy angry. LOL.
Haha. Does Freddie Ljungberg still play for them?! XD (I can be such a girl sometimes. :P)

Date: 2008-06-07 02:53 pm (UTC)Looks like everyone is going to lose their shit. Seen the Canadian promo? More shit is lost!
Yes, well, just remember the Doctor doesn't actually know Rose is coming back or anything, so he isn't being a dick.
He sure does. Mmm, hot football players...

Date: 2008-06-07 03:00 pm (UTC)I guess in a way the book kinda reinforces Baltar's metaphor and proves Bill and Laura can both be the Ryders.

Date: 2008-06-07 03:00 pm (UTC)No, I couldn't find it on youtube but I heard about it. Sounds much more AR centric. Hopefully it'll be up soon.
Hmm, indeed. But still, I shall probably go mental just because that's how I fangirl. LOL.
In that case, Sweden FTW!!! XD :P

Date: 2008-06-07 03:15 pm (UTC)I mean, the journey they've made is quite something. It's just been built. That's love. I've never believed in love at first sight - attraction, sure, falling in love fast, yeah. We can form attachments fairly fast. But love, love you build every day with someone and that made the moment so much more.
Baltar, Baltar, Baltar. He can manage to speak thruth while being totally blind at the same time. I'm still not sure what his role will be when all is said and the show is done. I keep changing my mind, because he has some powerful messages, and yet...

Date: 2008-06-07 03:21 pm (UTC)Heh. Well, it's not many episodes left now, so just focus on that if you feel yourself getting to territorial on Rose's behalf. She'll be there to hand!porn with the Doctor once more soon enough.
Indeed. Though I feel a bit sad having to cheer our mortal enemy come neighbour. Why couldn't Denmark have qualified? I like them much more.

Date: 2008-06-07 05:57 pm (UTC)And you have something to look forward to with this episode - though the last scene might be what stands out to those of us into the Adama/Roslin angle, the whole thing is a treat. And definitely better to watch the last bit in HD than on youtube ;)
Proper kissing would be very nice, dammit.

Date: 2008-06-08 03:33 am (UTC)*curses the half seasons and the fact there won't be any new eps after next week for waaaay too many months*
Jumping in since I need to talk about the series to somebody who watches it :) Regarding the last scene, very well done. What a proper way to resolve their UST, without making it over the top. Of course now it will all probably go to straight to hell....but that, like the reveal of the (at least 4 of) final cylons, I'm glad they're not doing something like leave it allll to the series finale or something similar. Only the mid-season finale *snort*
As for the rest, well - to not spam a comment, good ep on a lot of fronts :) Now I have to go catch up on DW as well.

Date: 2008-06-08 12:05 pm (UTC)I can't think of a better, less-contrived way to do it.
And of a better way to make us see an eventual human/cylon co-existence. They sure did sneak that up on us, didn't they but I saw this episode and I could see it *click* like a switch.
A magical episode and Xena kicked ass as usual. :-)

Date: 2008-06-10 05:51 pm (UTC)while i loved seeing that darkness in her, i'm so relieved that she stepped back from the edge. that said, i think she needed to look into the abyss, as you put it, for the point to come home to her.
Oi, SciFi, kissing isn't just hot when it's with young 'uns,
i enjoy the not-so-old kissage, but when adama and roslin properly kiss it will be more satisfying than any kiss by lee and kara or whomever. they've built up this relationship so, so beautifully, and i can't say enough how awesome it is to watch such a relationship as mature as theirs is unfold. it's a testament to mmc and ejo's acting that they can lay bare these strong feelings in such a clear, but subtle way. we don't need kissing to have that emotional satisfaction. and they don't, either.
i just can't believe it took me so long to get around to seeing this.
have a good one :o)
