Weirdest dream in a while: My cat gets shot. I take out his heart to get it beating again and manage to by pressing it a bit and fiddling with it like lego and then I put it back in. But I'm not sure I have fitted the pieces quite right even if the cat is breathing again, so I take the cat to the vet. AS YOU DO. Also, Stabæk beat Fredrikstad 1-0. (They really play today - will I be clairvoyant?)

I think this dream is sparked by the cat curling up in bed with me (very wet! We had an nightly rain-storm) and of course that I watched football just before bed. But still.

If you're friends with [livejournal.com profile] aj, a friend is hosting her a 42 Days in Hell -athon with various fandoms. I immidiately wanted to write Adama/Roslin stuck in a cell for 42 days and how they'd cope, but that's because I'm me. (Don't you just love friends that do that sort of thing for you, though?)

(Also got my ficathon fic back from beta and now I have to wait until Friday at the earliest to post. This is the disadvantage of finishing early and having no patience. Bugger. But on the bright side, it's my longest BSG fic so far.)

Speaking of BSG, a return in January seems fairly confirmed. If you trust SciFi, that is. Hmm. I want my BSG, dammit!

Read this article on the weekend, which was about sex after sixty and how society seems to pretend older people don't have sex.

Of course, all research show that hai, older people totally do it. In fact, a lot of women feel the sex is better for them after 50. (Says the research. I can believe it.) However, how and how often naturally change as people do and as your body changes.

Really, people over sixty probably know a fuckload more about sex than us young 'uns and sucks to be us that we're just ignoring it instead of maybe even learning something.

And you know, sooner or later most of us end up no longer young. And will still want to have sex. OHNOES.

I rather want an Adama/Roslin icon with 'Say no to ageism! Say yes to Mom/Dad sex!' now.

Finally, Avatar finale seems to have caused shipping wank, but since I am don't watch it and don't really care, what I want to know is who else hates mushed ship names like burning? (I saw Adama/Roslin made into Rodama the other day and wondered where I had left my napalm.) Quite some time ago I invited people on my flist to add hating mushed ship names to their interests and now I do it again.

I'm not beyond bribing.

I HATE mushed ship names with the fire of a thousand suns. HAAAAAATE. I can't even tolerate Huddy! Who was the first eejit that started ramming the names together, cos I'd like to ram their head through a wall. Gods! Someone used Sculder to refer to MSR and I think I threw up in my mouth a bit.

I don't know who it was, but it seems more rampant in some fandoms than others. The fake-cutesy-sugary-ness of it drives me mad, not to mention it redues two invididuals who are awesome on their own too to just an entity together. I no like that. And also the mushed names are so often painfully stupid. (With exceptions, I'll admit.)

Sculder? Gah! That's almost as bad as Grillows. Why, why, WHY?

Date: 2008-07-21 10:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] babylon-whore.livejournal.com
EXACTLY!!!! Its like they don't get to be individuals anymore, like all their awesome is only derived from the ship, which is bullshit, cos if that were true you probably wouldn't like them anyway!

Sculder...I mean come the frak on! If nothing else, it shows that you're a frakking newbie if you think that shits gonna fly. And Grillows...the hell? I don't even ship Grissom/Catherine (Grissom/Sara for me bb!) and that annoys me.

There are def some aspects of fandom that would lead one to tear their own eyes out.

Some people do seem to like characters as the ship only, though, so possibly that fuels some of the mushing of names. Blergh. Much hate.

I was a Grissom/Sara girl too, I just remember Grillows for the sheer horror of the name. There was a list of CSI ship names I found once and I never quite recovered.

If someone tries this in BSG fandom I swear I will go mental.

I have to say that I DETEST smushed ship names... I have yet to see a single one that's half way good.

I would blame the paparazzi and their whole "TomKat" and "Brangelina" nonsense, but I've been seeing it long than that.

Drose, to me, sounds like what happened when my senile aunt drove her car into a rose bush. Rodama, I'm sorry to say, sounds like it should be fighting Godzilla.

Why do they have to do this? It isn't even cute!

Yeah, the mushing thing has been going on for a long time - the media just seems to have picked it up and it's right hateful. "TomKat" - shudder.

Rodama, I'm sorry to say, sounds like it should be fighting Godzilla.

Okay, that made me laugh. It totally does.

Some smush-names are infuriating. Others...well, they're informative enough for me.

I even coined one; Daarkin, for the SW (canon)pair Daala/Tarkin. I feel it carries some sense of the 'do not want' that pair inspire in me.

What, did people who actually like the ship start using it or is it just something you and possibly others who don't like the ship use?

I don't think there are many who like it.

I use it, a few others have picked it up...is mainly used to pin-point why we are shuddering. :p

It sounds too much like Rhode Island.

Rodama...I used that in a fic LOL! OMG, you're not talking about me using it, are you? Because when I used it, it wasn't serious :D

When I used it, it was a crackfic where Adama and Roslin were trying to both get their names on a planet they're dreaming up as being better than Earth. I also used 'Adoslin' :) But I swear, only ever in a jokey fic would I ever use Rodama as a name.

Date: 2008-07-21 11:39 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
I didn't know you had used it, so no, not talking about you. (Haven't read the fic, I think.) Not really talking about using it as a joke at all, really. I'm talking about serious, stick it on your icons, call yourself Rodama-shipper, proclaim the glory of Rodama in all seriousness, think the mushed name is cute and should conquer the fandom sort of thing.

(Making a joke of it I would probably approve of.)

I'm pretty sure I saw it on a forum or LJ. Definitely not in a fic.

I saw Adama/Roslin made into Rodama the other day and wondered where I had left my napalm.

I feel this reaction is perfectly justified. Smooshed 'ship names just don't work for me. Now that could be because the couples I 'ship tnd to not be cutesy and so they smooshed names don't fit, but I think it's more likely that it's because smooshing names is stupid.

YES.

Also, cute couples who are cute on their own don't really need fandom's naming help to get there.

I am going to add 'hating mushed ship names' to my interests RIGHT NOW. Besides the easiness of it turning into a battle cry in the wank wars, I second what [livejournal.com profile] babylon_whore said - it turns the people involved into an entity. Urgh.

One of these days I swear I will draw pics of strange hybrids of the Doctor and Rose / Snape and Harry / whoever else gets mushed ship names and point out that this is what they would look like. And it would make having relationships v. hard, oh yes...

I know there's an application online that lets you see what a baby of two people might look like by blending their faces - I imagine a mushed entity might look something like that.

I am going to add that to my interests RIGHT NOW. Because it is one of my pet hates. I never used to come across it that much, until I started dabbling in the CSI fan-pool. I started facepalming a lot after that. I mean seriously, Smack? WTF?

That and the ship names that are supposed to make sense to the pairing, but make absolutely no sense to anyone else (I'm looking at you again, CSI....)

I can't even remember what that one was supposed to be :P YoBling was another one that made me go "0_o". I think that one is Catherine/Warrick?

I remember going into a CSI forum once, and people were actually actively thinking up ship names for various pairings. I mean, what's wrong with writing out the full names of the people concerned?

I'm glad that with most of the fandoms I dabble in, everybody writes out the full names, and ship names have not yet risen their ugly head.

We'll ignore the 'Drose', shall we?

Oh, I hate those mushed ship names too!! Urgh. Rodama is probably one of the worst ones, I have to say. Eep. And I hate Sculder for Mulder/Scully!!! I am so adding that to my interests!! :P

I'll confess to having used two mushed ship names in the past: Sarkney (Julian Sark/Sydney Bristow from Alias) and Spuffy. I used them for the convenience and that they amused me so my use always had a touch of irony. I don't think I ever used any of the other mushed up ship names in those two fandoms, though.

On principle, I am totally against the smushing. The latest one that had me looking for where I'd last left my napalm was in the Iron Man fandom for the Tony Stark/Pepper Potts ship: Pepperony. Uuuuugghhhhuunngggh. I can't believe I actually managed to type it out. *shudders* So in a way, Rodama? Could be worse, IMO. It could be something like *braces self to type it out again* Pepperony.

God, yes. I'm the editor who added that name to the shared hatred for smooshed pairing names over at TVTropes. What an inane name.

The Trope page though, is fantastic - a great place to add your favorite brain-breaking smushed pairing names, such as "Hilson" (House/Wilson), "Petlar" (Peter/Sylar), and "Sparrabeth" (Jack/Elizabeth). OY.

Okay, as a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, I will defend my show with this:

The fandom is young. Young young. And, in my experience, those are the kinds of fans that do that sort of thing. Also, for what it's worth, the creators are totally about encouraging the mushing of names. They even had a video featuring the 'ship names a couple of years ago at ComiCon, I think.

So, yes, I hate this, too, but this is one fandom I'm willing to forgive it.

Also, I personally am affronted by the Harmonian comparison. For one thing, those are just a sect of really, really hardcore fans that are talking rewrites. For another, there's a difference here between the Aang/Katara vs. Zuko/Katara debate and the Ron/Hermione vs Harry/Hermione debate. Mostly in storytelling. I'm definitely biased, as I ship the latter, but I will say this - Zuko/Katara makes for much more compelling storytelling than Aang/Katara. Plus, I have issues with 12-year-olds finding TWOO WUV. Seriously. I understand that Aang/Katara is the creators' ship, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. It also means that, with the Internet at my mercy, I can make this known.

*shrug* Having survive Harry Potter fandom, I think I'm allowed to make this call.

I don't know the fandom, so I'll take your word for it. Also, not knowing the fandom, I don't really have much opinion either which way on the ships. I couldn't read the wank thing because my eyes kept glazing over at the mushed names, honestly.

But really, very few things compare to the whole HP shipping deal, so yeah, I can totally be with you on that comparison being unfair.

You should totally watch the show - it's brilliant.

I can't read the wank - there's spoilers for the series finale, and I haven't seen it yet. D:

Absolutely, so HP ship wank is like bringing up Hitler/Nazis in a discussion. Once you mention it, your opinion is officially invalid.

I loved Avatar, though I didn't ship it (if I had I probably would have leaned heavily towards Zuko and Katara, that's just my thing...but I haven't shipped a cartoon since way back when I did the whole Flint/LJ thing (or was that comic?).

Ah...my first ship! The memories!!!

Anyhow, you should get your hands on the dvd...this series is fabulous. Fabulous writing, fabulous animation...can't say enough about it.

As for ship names...they lost me at Hameron (Cameron/House).
