Just a reminder that my offer from over a month ago if I can help you out in any way still stands.

And in the spirit of friendly on the LJs and because I am vaguely bored, a Ask Anything Meme:

Comment to this entry with something you'd like to ask me (fandom, real life, opinions, anything) and I will respond with an answer to it and a question that you have to reply to. You can choose to ask another and go on if you so want, or just inflict it on your own flist instead.

In fandom:

- Whoever posted this to [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets is on my wavelength, because I totally mentioned John Hannah as my choice for the Eleventh Doctor a little while back. YES PLEASE. And I think Helen Mirren should play a companion and Hugh Grant play her toyboy secretary that (accidentally) gets taken along and gets laid a lot. This is since I can't have Adama and Roslin be companions, obviously.

- Been reading [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda's Twilight reviews and specifically the Breaking Dawn ones for the fun of it. Am I the only one to find the concept of werewolves kinda hotter than vampires? Not that I'm that into either, just... Wolves are awesome, is all I'm saying.

- Whut. Pirates of the Caribbean still causes the wank? Wandering into other people's shipping wars is always a very dizzying experience. Especially when there are mushed ship names (KILL THEM WITH FIRE) all over and yeah, drink anyone? (The rum is never gone here.)

- Oh bugger, debate about whether or not rape can be forgiven in [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants just can't go well. This sub-thread rather wanted to make me throw up a little. Erk.

- I miss my BSG. Woe. But [livejournal.com profile] mingsmommy made an interesting post on why Battlestar Galactica ate her brain and you know, I rather do think sometimes stories set in a world not quite our own can show us our world all the more clearly. Because then we properly look at it - set in our world, we think we know what the world is like already. We can be blind to things that are familiar, you know?

In other news:

- Dogs may catch yawns, study suggests.
- 'Please kill me', says suspect in the bus beheading murder.
- Texas executes Mexican despite protests from the International Court of Justice.
- A US study of instant messaging suggests 'six degrees of separation' theory has something to it.
- Iraqi Palestinian refugees to settle in Iceland and Sweden.
- Berlusconi in breast cover-up row. (Oh BERLU)
Man tries to get rid of wasps; ends up burning down garage with car inside. (Totally LOL at his comment: "Maybe using lighter fluid wasn't such a good idea, but it was an accident all the same and the wasps are gone!")

Are we talking John/Hugh, John/Helen, John/Helen/Hugh, or all of the above?

Cleolinda does it better than SMeyer. I'm just saying.
But wolves are hotter because of the whole animal thing and the fact that they're only dangerous once a month and can go in sunlight.
So there's that whole appeal.
(However, the whole throat+mouth=yes does it for me, so I've still got a thing for Vampires.)

Anyway:
Of course dogs can catch yawns. They also spread them, too, like some sort of viral, oxegen-intaking STD. Trufax.

I am totally open to all possibilities there.

I think I just like wolves because for one thing, they live in Norway and for another I always, always asociate them with winter, snow, northern lights and quiet evenings but for the howling. It's a very specific image in my head and it feels like a part of me. Probably sounds bonkers, but there you are.

And oooh, yes I got your postcard last week - I'm very sorry I forgot to mention it. Thank you very much :)

Been all right - working and living and all that jazz. You up to something funky?

Uhmm..question:
What do you think of the "six degrees of separation" theory?

Date: 2008-08-06 11:45 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
I think it's the expression of an idea that the world is becoming more interconnected and with more communication and interaction possibilities, but I don't think it specifically is true. There are parts of the world where Internet is not something everyone has, for instance, so be hard to connect people that way. The idea resonates, but I don't think it's a truth of our time. (Yet, anyway.)

What do you think Gandhi would have had on his iPod (if he had gotten the opportunity to have one)?

Hugh Grant and Helen Mirren in Doctor Who? I totally support this notion (mind you, my dream Eleven is still Damian Lewis. Partly because hey, the Doctor gets to be ginger).

And Twilight recap makes me snigger, albeit in a slightly "what the hell is going on" kind of way (seriously, sparkly vampires?).

If there was one place in Norway you'd recommend people seeing, what would it be? (bought to you by Olive who is vaguely planning European adventures *g*).

I can't draw. Like seriously, I can't draw. But I can list six things that separates the teenage me from the present me sure enough.

1. Teenage me wore a lot of tights and black t-shirts. Present me wear a lot of jeans and tops with a little more colour and cleavage.
2. Teenage me liked long hair. Present me cut it when it starts brushing my shoulders.
3. Teenage me voted Socialist Left, present me vote Labour.
4. Teenage me liked to paint my fingernails, present me like to paint my toenails.
5. Teenage me had X-Files posters, present me have mostly photographs of nature motifs.
6. Teenage me liked blond guys, present me have a tendency to prefer them dark-haired.

Your drawing was very nice, BTW.

From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
*That* is a seriously tricky question, wow. Oi. Obviously, it would be tempting to say BSG, but that world would probably depress me a great deal to exist in, even as a fictional exercise. Still, if I were there, I'd like to be the person who, 100 years into the future, the story of the Fall of the Twelve Colonies is taught to in school, just to see how the story retold as history would compare to the story as seen happening. It's something that interests me, how history is also telling for how we tell it.

Why do you think fiction is so appealing to us that we constantly create and get brain-eaten (as it were) by invented stories?

The POTC wank is an interesting one. When that Mod post showed up on my flist I was highly confused, as NO WANK HAPPENED IN THE COMM. I just chose to ignore it completely, since it made no sense for her to be flipping out in the comm for off-comm issues.

(I'm not a fan off smooshed names either, although I belong to a few comms that use them as a title, since those are the only places to go. I try to never use them myself - although I use to use "Spuffy" on a semi-regular basis way back when. I prefer the backslash myself *shrugs*.)

From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
*shrugs* I have no idea, I don't even follow that fandom. (Seen the movies, that's enough for me. I didn't dislike them, I just don't feel any urge to be fannish about them, you know?) Clearly something or another is going on there - I imagine someone suddenly dropped into Doctor Who shipping arguments would feel quite at loss too. I'm imgining trying to mod a comm welcoming both Doctor/Rose and say, Doctor/Martha and kinda wincing a bit. It could be done, but ow.

(There are some mushed ship names that don't make me want to stab things with a fork, but they're not exactly the majority. I prefer / or initials like GSR.)

Be glad you're not in the wank in POTC. I'm not on [livejournal.com profile] pirategasm, I left a long time ago, but what happened with the mod has been building up for a very long time. The folks who claim that there's "never" been any wank over there, that the mod is bringing it all on to the comm herself, they've quickly forgotten how a fic author a few months ago was jumped on by some for daring to have an original idea concerning Elizabeth. This was back in early May, and on [livejournal.com profile] pirategasm.

There's a handful of J/E shippers who have gone around the bend, is the most polite way I can put it. It's not all of them, there are quite a few sane ones out there, but there's some vocal ones who seem to love bashing Will, either blatantly, or taking a more subtle approach. Some of these will bash anyone who dares to think differently - again, sometimes in a blatant manner, sometimes more subtly. They see their non-canon pairing as being above anything and everything else, including canon. I have seen them praise Will's being hurt and thrown to the side in a fic by Elizabeth for no other reason than to get the hot sex on with Jack, in reviews they'll leave for a J/E fic. They will bait folks into arguing with them, and then proclaim that they're being oppressed.

Again, this isn't all J/E shippers, just a rabid, VERY vocal handful. I'm not going to try and claim that everyone else is a saint, but most folks can get along, the handful I'm thinking of seem to thrive off of just how much crap they can stir up sometimes. This has been going on for several months now.

Maybe the mod overreacted, because so much was not actually seen on the comm itself but was behind the scenes, but I can understand her anger at folks trying to drag her into the middle of things. She's taking a breather for a while, the dust will settle a bit, and then somebody will likely decide to stir things up again. Probably not at [livejournal.com profile] pirategasm, but somewhere. The drama over the last several months is one reason why I made a post on my own LJ venting about stupid crap in fandom, and not just the POTC fandom. It's also one of the reasons I've decided to do something positive, and periodically make recs of good fic in my various fandoms on my LJ. Not that I have a lot of traffic or anything, but I figure I can either watch the drama, be in the drama, or try to do something positive about it all.

Doing something positive makes me feel better, at least. Otherwise I might have to set up a small apartment in the back corner of your wankshelter. Yeesh...

ETA: If there's been wank before early May 2008 on [livejournal.com profile] pirategasm, I don't know about it, like I said, I left the comm a long time ago. Wasn't seeing fic I was interested in at the time. But I do know about what happened in early May, because it ended up being taken over to [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants, which from what I know about, started more off-comm wank. Got any Advil in the bar?

Date: 2008-08-06 03:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
This sounds involved. J/E is... Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth, I guess? And they're not happy they didn't get their ship at the end, I'm guessing too. Tensions and grudges and I can imagine a general sort of picture here. This is familiar in a painful sort of different-fandom-same-shit sort of thing, oi. I mean, some of the mroe rabid Doctor/Rose shippers totally made me twitch, and some of the Doctor/Martha did too and it's like they feed off each other a bit at times.

I mod T&C, so I have a lot of sympathy for modly woes. In general though, I think mod posts like that just tend to make it worse. Then again, I obviously don't know the story here.

I think someone linked to some backstory in a f_w comment and I vaguely remember reading that [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants spill-over, because I've heard about this comm before and the names sound familiar.

I got Advil, I got aquavit, I got all the poisons and painkillers you can think of.

(But all the more power to you for trying to do something positive in it all. That's often what feels like the saving graze when fandoms have total shit-fests.)

Yes. Lots of people do it in summer in Norway.

Barbequed lutefisk sounds like something out of a horror story. Yowza. I don't think it would lend itself to barbeque very well.

I do like marinaed pork 'sticks' as we call them in Norway. Small and crunchy a plus. We do actually sometimes barbeque salmon, but mostly it's pork, other kinds of meat and sausages we go for.

omg I actually got a name mention at f_w! Is it twisted that it makes me just a little bit proud?

The wank's been building up for a while. Apparently, there are a bunch of vocal, rabid 'sparrabethers' somewhere (don't get me started on the smooshed name - you resist and after a while it seeps into your brain) who hate poor Will and are nasty to him and hurt his feelings. I think they're supposed to be on my flist and, in fact, I think I'm supposed to be one of them, even though I don't recall posting any vitriolic Jack/Elizabeth propaganda or seeing it appear on my flist any time recently.

But it descended sometime ago into the usual name calling and personal insults, and with that mod post, I decided it was time for me to call it a day. I think things might still be going boom somewhere, but I'm not sure.

Either way, it was a small price to pay to hve my name immortalised! \o/

Also Wordy McWord to John Hannah as 11, only I hope they let him keep the accent this time and efrain from making insulting 'touring the regions' comments ;)

Interestingly, I've had people from both sides of the ship-divide (as it were) comment here and there seems to be a few different perspectives. Not surprising, really. Bit of bias and just plain difference in POV can make a wank like this be told in two very different ways.

As an outsider, it's a bit fascinating.

Someone on FS posted my choice for the 11th Doctor pretty spot on: it was a pic of Hugh Laurie with the text "I love Hugh. I love House. But I hate that its success means that he's really unlikely to come back to England and join DW as the Eleventh Doctor". Because dude, HUGH LAURIE. He'd be utter perfection as the Doctor. What I really, really want, though is Emma Thompson as 11. FEMALE DOCTOR WHAT?!

Been reading cleolinda's Twilight reviews and specifically the Breaking Dawn ones for the fun of it.

[livejournal.com profile] cleolinda pwns all. I can't bring myself to read any of Twilight without throwing up in my mouth a little (and restraining myself from hunting down SMeyer and screaming "U R DOING IT WRONG"), so her recaps are my only way of knowing what's got everyone going so batshit. I am not disappointed by her.

And for the Ask-Anything Meme:

What do you NOT want to see happen on BSG in this last half-season? Pairings, plot, crackpot theories coming true, etc.

*offers you flamethrower*

Aww. I'm glad you liked it that much. It was one of the funnier requests to do from that post :) I have more smutty things to post once beta is done with it, but not really bantery, sorry :P

I see Hugh Laurie too much as Prince George, I think. But he acts really well, so I'm sure he could do a smashing job. And maybe get Stephen Fry to have a guest spot too. That would make my year.

Emma Thompson in general FTW.

I would really like NOT to see anything like Dee/Lee/Kara/Sam revisited. I don't mind if Kara and Lee get some sort of resolution between them and Kara and Sam too, but certain parts of that storyline I'd be happy never to see again. It made me dislike the characters, and Kara is too awesome to be disliked. I'd also like the last Cylon not to be Zak please. And not an end where they all die.

Question: If you could make just one character survive in BSG, who would be your pick?

Werewolves are so much better then vampires. Which is why Seth Clearwater is the best character in the Twilight series. Mhm.

I've given up on Breaking Dawn. I want to go read Harry Potter to get my literary sanity back.
