[livejournal.com profile] falena84 did a massive pic!spam of her Norway adventure with me here. Many pictures of me looking half-daft, but oh well. Ignore me, watch the scenery. (BTW Elisa, there was a a bad fire in Bergen just after we left. Bummer.)

In the Wank That Ate Fandom and Made It To the Media, a ruling has happened in the Harry Potter Lexicon case. Anyone really shocked by what it is? Because I'm not. (And there's also the strangely parallel Torchwood wank. Huh. Must be the season.)

In a slightly WTF: Green polar bears. After swimming in algae, apparently. Urk. Say, all that algae the BSG lot eats and handles, will that have scary green effects eventually?

In a slightly '...oi': A cooking shows causes further problems for Thai PM. A lot seems to have happened in Thailand while I was distracted by holiday. Must look into.

In secret that caught my eye on [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets: Mocking Rose ends a friendship. Er. Doctor Who fandom gets really serious about the companion love and hate, doesn't it? I have friends who like her and friends who hate her and it does get rather intense at times. The companion that divides fandom into love or hate? Some characters do do that in fandoms and it's always interesting to figure out why.

In a 'say what now?': Three young women out walking in Oslo’s Furuset district Monday evening were threatened by a man waving a sword. Several questions arises here. 1) What the hell? 2) How very Viking? 3) How much alcohol had either he or they been drinking? and 4) What the hell?

Plans for today (another glorious day off): Make [livejournal.com profile] lotus79 stop reading bad Kara/Lee, ponder what next writing project should be of mine (taking suggestions and nags - not sure I'm feeling inspired at the moment), eat, play some WoW and send a blue moose to Italy. I love lazy days.

Oh, and now that I will be home a bit - Cammy_Sandy at hotmail dot com is my MSN if you ever felt like chatting-

I always somehow manage not to follow Harry Potter wank, and then I read about it afterwards and it's so epic I'm surprised I wasn't drowning in it. To the extent that I do understand this case, though -- basically "guy was trying to sell book that was 99% quotes of JKR; JKR said 'no bitch'" -- I'm left wondering why anyone thought it was so terrible of her. o_O Did the rules about plagiarism get revoked whilst I wasn't paying attention?

Re: the fandomsecret: oi. I have a really good friend who's a super-exclusive Rose/Ten shipper, and who doesn't much care for the later companions, whilst I'm more of a Martha and Donna person. And if we ever stopped talking because of that, I would go out and slap myself about the face with a very large, wet fish until I realised what an idiot I was.

Is it terrible of me that the thought of someone dashing about the street waving a sword made me giggle madly? xD

I dunno, it seemed fairly clear to me as well. I don't claim to be an expert, but I have had some interaction with 'fair use' through journalism and it's seriously not a free-for-all offer on a buffet.

I rather like Rose, Martha and Donna (but not Jack, whch makes me an oddity in fandom) and I try not to make judgements on people based on tastes varying. But I do get uncomfortable when a lot of vitrol is directed at any of the companions - goes when it's friends of mine doing it too.

Heh, no. I'd be very curious to hear why exactly the guy waved a sword around. Seriously, why a sword?!

Date: 2008-09-09 12:34 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cazrolime.livejournal.com
You don't like Jack?! Our friendship is over. :O

But yeah, I see what you mean about it being uncomfortable. In our case, we tend to talk about how awesome so-and-so is in a non-shippy way, or how cool/scary/whut episode x was... or if we're feeling really adventurous, stuff other than Dr Who. :P There's enough stuff to talk about that companion shipping doesn't have to come up, and if it does then each of us just doesn't go out of our way to say things that will annoy the other.

Because swords are governed by the Rule of Cool, clearly. There doesn't have to be a reason. :D

OHNOES :P (Seriously, I don't dislike him, he just does nothing for me. Alas.) My taste in men is... Varied.

Yeah, it's never easy hearing bad things about something you really like. Easy to get defensive and then the other gets defensive and suddenly you have wank. Blah. But yeah, a little care goes a long way then.

Haha. I shall remember that should I ever feel an urge to break one out.

It looks like you two had a really nice time!
(Thanks for the postcard, by the way. :D )

It makes you wonder "why a sword?".

A sword is... shiny?

And you're welcome :) We did indeed have a smashing time.

...True!
Definitely true. And... it's harder to trace should something go amiss and someone get seriously injured? (Who the goodness thinks to use a sword?)
And... In the event of an emergency... it cannot be used as a life-raft.

woooo.

That's really great to hear. It's really too bad about the fire, though. :(

Date: 2008-09-09 12:37 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cazrolime.livejournal.com
It might actually be easier to trace, as they could look at the size and shape of the wound and then go "okay, we can narrow down our suspect list to people who have access to swords".

*done hijacking conversation* *will go back to CSI-land now*

Definitely a point.
But they could say "Stab wound. Unidentified weapon. Most likely large knife."

If it weren't in the news that there was some person running around with a sword, no one would THINK "sword". But now that it's out in public and around the world and whatnot, people are going to be looking for "sword".

...Which is actually stranger than it should be.

Date: 2008-09-09 12:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cazrolime.livejournal.com
You speak the truth. So now would be the ideal time to go out using a large knife so the police assumes it's a sword? *making notes :P*

LOL at your conversation.

Absolutely it's the right time. I would say that there hasn't been a better time in recent years to use a very large knife.

Make lotus79 stop reading bad Kara/Lee

Well, you know how to do that. Write me some good Kara/Lee to read (or find me some, I'm not too fussed.)

ponder what next writing project should be of mine (taking suggestions and nags - not sure I'm feeling inspired at the moment)

Roslin/Adama with a Kara/Lee interlude for me? *bats eyelashes*

Now that's far too general and non-specific, you meanie. At least give me some starting prompt or something :P

give me one in return, if you like. Am feeling a little adventurous. ;)

okay... AU babyfic where Bill and Laura secretly had an affair 30 years ago and the baby was given up for adoption and turns out to be Kara, making her frakfest with Lee into incest.

*ducks*

No? Just kidding, I'll keep thinking...

OK, a book on sex (such as the Kama Sutra), Bill walking in on his kids doing it (crosses fingers for a bit of detail there), Laura introducing Bill to a little known room on Colonial One, someone playing a prank on someone else (and getting some sort of payback).

And just to make it five things... a heart-shaped pillow such as the one my cat loves to sleep on.

Oh, mannnn . . . I am so jealous of [livejournal.com profile] falena84. Maybe one day I can visit you. And all that green and alll that water . . . I wonder what you'd think of dry, sere, brown Southern California, with only ONE, count it, one natural lake in the region.

Date: 2008-09-09 04:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Hey, I used to live in Australia, remember? Dry, I've certainly seen plenty of. ;)

But I never really thought about how much water Norway has until people point it out - just so used to living with it I consider it normal, I guess. You forget how precious a resource water really is in a country like this.

The whole different-opinions-about-Rose-end-friendships thing is like totally WTF, but that secret was very nicely written, I thought. LOL>

I don't know if you've been catching up on your flist at all, but me and [livejournal.com profile] multicolour have made a European Politics comm was we were amazed there wasn't already one. Thought it might interest you. [livejournal.com profile] europolitics :)

(We're looking for mods too, if you're interested. I know you're busy with other comms though so no obligation. :) )

Date: 2008-09-09 05:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
I couldn't quite get past the misspelling of 'elitist' personally, but maybe that's elitist of me ;)

I've been slow to catch up as I suck, but that sounds quite interesting. What's the main purpose of the comm - political discussions in general with a European bent, or more debates about current oitical on-going in Europe as it happns or...? I'd totally be interested - my father dabbles in politics and I was a lot into it when I was young.

T&C is not that much of an obligation since I share it with two fellow mods - I'd certainly be willing to help out.

From: [identity profile] bex245.livejournal.com
LMAO. Okay, yeah, but besides that; nicely phrased. Whatever. *facepalm* :P

Both really. Discussion about politics in Europe, either one country or several, the EU, that kind of thing. Plus worldwide news looked at from a European perspective.

Okay, cool. I'll keep in mind that you're interested and I'll let you know when we think about that kind of stuff. The comm is very new and just being set up atm.

As far as "taking suggestions and nags," how about a fic with at least one scene in which Laura and Kara actually converse with each other? They're both such wonderful, strong characters that it's a shame we don't get to see them interact more on BSG. Love your writing!
