This is entirely a World of Warcraft post. Flee! Flee!
When last we left off in WoW, I was primed and ready and very excited about the expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. Rather pathetically degree of excited, really. And it has lived up to it - here follows some screencaps of fun I've had playing in Northrend.

Boat to Northrend! In the background, you see a settlement in Howling Fjord, which lives up to its Nordic name with Nordic-looking architecture and lots of Nordic-inspired lore.

Howling Fjord scenery. It's actually very pretty and I like the place.

Harpoon surfing. As you do.

A very bad murloc disguise that somehow fools murlocs. I always thought they were pretty stupid, so no shocker there.

Ooops, I have helped piss off Malygos, dragon aspect and guardian of magic. Sadly, he will kidnap this lovely red dragon who just let me fly on her and then I have to kill her later because he's brainwashing her. Aww :(

Naxxramas in its new Northrend version, a level 80 raid instance. But much more about that and its bosses later.

Queen of the Dragons, the red dragon aspect and guardian of life and Earth, looking over the field of battle at the Wrathgate. After a long, long questline you get to see a cinematic of the events there. Did you think we had forgotten? Did you think we had forgiven? Brrr. You can watch the cinematic here, in fact.

After those events, you get to actually fight in the Forsaken home of Undercity alongside Jaina and the (newly returned) King of Stormwind, who are going after some rogue Forsaken that did Bad Things. It's downright awesome. The questline also affirms my suspicion Jaina got it going with Thrall. She can make portals to Ogrimmar, hello!

Hai Lich King! I've just sabotaged this troll minion of his enough that the Lich King is mad and snuffs him. Haha.

And now I've actively pissed the Lich King off, oh dear.

But I still get to play him. Heh. Actually, there's a line of quests that let you play Arthas on his path to becoming the Lich King several times as sort of 'visions of the past', and here I am doing his duel with Illidan. Illidan, who I have killed with my guild.

Continuing in my hobby of annoying the Lich King, here I'm helping Tirion Fordring (leader of the Argent Crusade and paladin of downright awesome squared) destroying something of, er, importance to the Lich King. We've actually gone incognito into a cultist hide, though Tirion's idea of disguise is rather bemusing. "Oh look, there's a totally incognito cultist with the freaking Ashbringer." Subtle, Tirion. Very subtle. Lich King shows up and then some gone-good Death Knights show up and help us escape.

In the background, the magic city of Dalaran, and the hub most players hang about in these days.

Icecrown Citadel, current hangout of the Lich King and a future raid dungeon. Not for a year at least though, I suspect. Until then (and when I can actually battle you directly) Arthas, rest assured I will continue to bug you a lot.

Crocodile riding. As you do.

This is the 5-man dungeon of Oculus, where you fight some of Malygos' dragons (he's gone a bit mental and want to restrict all magic, and the other dragons are trying to stop him) while riding dragons. I'm on top of a bronze one I wish I could keep, but alas, no such luck.

Naxxramas time! Here my guild has defeated Anub'Rehkan, a crypt lord that likees scarabs a lot.

Grand Widow Faerlina is biting the dust.

Big, big Maexxnaspider has snuffed it. Does nasty stuff with web and bondage. Probably kinky.

Patchwerk is dead. Awww :( Patchwerk is kinda legendary for his ability to hit like a train, though I can proudly attest to actually having survived a 'hateful strike' (it's a hit ability he has) from him. I look like a runed iron dwarf in this screencap, just for the fun of it.
We have killed more bosses than this, but I've forgotten to take screencaps of all. Boo me.

My character as she looked half an hour ago.
More downed bosses and adventures in Northrend will follow at a later time. Uh oh.

Date: 2008-12-10 08:17 pm (UTC)The Coldarra questline was pretty cool. Poor Keriastrazsa. And I'm looking forward to Wrath Gate.
I will never forget my first thought, though, when we entered Northrend by way of the boat from Menethil to Howling Fjord... "This is like riding the Norway ride at EPCOT." And I do admit, I thought of you and wondered what you thought of it!

Date: 2008-12-10 08:40 pm (UTC)You'll have to do near all quests in Dragonblight zone before you get to the Wrathgate bit, but it is totally worth it, and the Undercity follow-up is awesome to play. You'll get to have 50k hitpoints and do insane damage.
Hah, yeah, they're not exactly subtle about the Nordic similarities. I knew the zone would look like that from previews, but it was still a bit weirdly bemusing to see - so very Norway and they even used music that reminded me of our traditional music. Very obvious parallels, so Blizzard must intend for it to be that visible. (After all, Northrend is north and Scandinavia is what a lot associate with north.) Plus, they stole half our legends. Once you get to the Storm Peaks zone, you'll run into a huge questline and Loken, who is just Loki on an Azerothian holiday. Freya's about too, and more Nordic-sounding names than you could shake a stick at. (All the -heim names just make me grin. Norway's full of -heim places.)
It makes Northrend feel a lot more familiar and home-ish than Outland ever did, though of course Outland was intended to be slightly 'out' as it were.

Date: 2008-12-10 09:56 pm (UTC)New scenery looks pretty.
I quite like Camillaes's new hairdo. The big black weapon is. Big. And black. Gives off the proper 'do not mess with me or else' vibes. :P

Date: 2008-12-10 10:45 pm (UTC)New hairdo actually has a braid too. And the big bad sword I got from a death knight. It'll do until I get something sharper ;)

Date: 2008-12-10 10:13 pm (UTC)Damn, the Wrathgate quest was FUN. (And Alexstrasza is pure awesome.) As was the Battle for the Undercity, although as a dedicated Hordeling, I was helping Thrall and Sylvanas (who looks damn fine these days, mrow!) kill a certain dreadlord. Also, Thrall/Jaina OTP.
Oh, Tirion. Next time you infiltrate a cult, leave the Ashbringer at home. Srsly. You've survived without it! Although it does make for better Lich King ownage...
God, I still need to get my butt in gear and so some more of the level 80 dungeons, heroic and non. I've been busy clearing out each zone of quests...

Date: 2008-12-10 10:50 pm (UTC)Total OTP, I'm with you.
I was laughing so hard as I was doing that quest. Really, Tirion is not so much about brains, but he's still awesome.
I've cleared all zones except Icecrown now, where I got some group quests to do. It is a lot of quests all together, sheesh. But epic fun along the way.

Date: 2008-12-10 10:45 pm (UTC)FOR THE HORDE!
Also, I'm just shy of dinging 51, and one of my guildies is going to help me get the Ice Barbed Spear from Alterac Valley. Yay?
no subject
Date: 2008-12-10 10:53 pm (UTC)Lol, lucky you? Get to 58 and go Outland and you'll quickly get much better anyway. The jump between gear from classic WoW and Burning Crusade was actually quite big. For that reason the first few quests in Outland can be murder on you. Wrath did much better there.
no subject
Date: 2008-12-11 03:58 am (UTC)My guildies are insisting they take me to Outland at 55, actually, so I can really get some GOOD gear for when my crew decides to haul me through Onyxia. Consider me TERRIFIED!
... Though I want to get good enough and have enough primo gear that I could solo Stratholme if I want to. Eventually.

Date: 2008-12-11 09:28 am (UTC)Nice guildies - but Onyxia is a cake-walk these days. There's even been people killing her solo. Poor Onyxia, now so not a threat at all.
And I can solo Stratholme - bit of a bitch at 70, probably easy-peasy now at 80. Just takes a little bit of care.
no subject
Date: 2008-12-11 12:32 pm (UTC)So my guildies have been telling me. One of them (the one that's been powerleveling me a bit) plans to solo her as his feral druid. Lucky punk.
And the same guildie took me through Strat when he was 77, and he still found it rough. One thing that bothers us: Why are there Eye of Naxxramas making trouble for you in Strat still when Naxx is up in Northrend now?

Date: 2008-12-10 11:57 pm (UTC)Damn you, woman, damn you. You started this in my mind, and now it's like an evil demon in my mind that just won't stop whispering.

6 Ways Wow is Worse Than Real Life (is that stuff about dancing bears true?)

Date: 2008-12-11 09:31 am (UTC)About dancing bears - yes, it does happen that if one starts, a lot of other druids follow. It's such a funny dance, see. The druid have all the best dances, really, since they got shapeshifting ones in addition to their racial one. Boo.

Date: 2008-12-12 01:26 am (UTC)...Except that "6 Ways Wow is Worse than RL" thing has me scared crapless. Maybe I won't join the SUPAHPURTY game after all D:.
