Request a Christmas drabble

It's the week of giftgiving for a lot of us, so in the spirit of it: If you want, request from me a drabble-ish of 100-200 words with a character/pairing of you choosing, as well as an object you will or have used during the week.

Fandoms on offer are Doctor Who, BSG, World of Warcraft (haha) and Narnia. Others might be done on special request, but you'll have to ask first.

I'll post them during the week or closer to New Year, depending on how many I'll be doing.

Yes, I do have a bath'leth at home. I have brought it into work before to show it off. I've also threatened to bring it back in to wreak some righteous havoc on our servers. This week, I may not bother to threaten, but just do it.

Okay, revealing my own ignorance here - or gap in English vocabulary - but what the hell are those things? Take pity on a poor Norwegian and explain it in small words.

Haha! No, they're not English words, actually. They're Jewish words. A Menorah is the candleabra we use to light candles through the eight nights of Hannukah:


A dreidel is a traditional top-like toy, with a Hebrew letter on each of the four sides. Each represents a word to do with the miracle of Hannukah, and it's used to play a game.

Aaaaah. Yeah, Norway doesn't really have a lot of people considering themselves Jewish, so there's not a lot of exposure to Jewish traditions for us, you know? I do recognise the candleabra now that you showed me the image, but I didn't know that was the proper name for it. Now, do the lights represent something special, like Catholics light candles for the dead in their Churches, or is it more just tradition or...?

Ah, I suppose that makes sense. Yes, the lights represent the miracle of Hannukah, which was that a small flask of oil meant to ignite the Temple's Menorah for only one day lasted for eight days. Which is why the Menorah has eight branches (plus the tall one), and which is why we light it eight nights (one more each night).

There's more to the story than that, obviously, but that's the gist of the Menorah itself.
