BSG's Blood on the Scales
Feb. 7th, 2009 12:19 pmI've had nasty flu all week, but still gone to work, and it's rather taken all my reserves. So sorry if I've been a bit incommunicado. I got weekend and a few days off next week and shall hopefully get better.
I'll do replies to the fannish ask-anything later in the weekend.
Now, BSG.
- A reason I love BSG: Gaeta orders the deaths of two of my beloved characters, Adama and Roslin, and I still shed a tear for him. Oh, Gaeta. His scene with Baltar was the one that did it - 'I know who you are, Felix'. Good people can do terrible things, taking it one step at a time, justifying each. Do we judge people by their motivations, actions or consequences? What's the verdic for Gaeta? From me at least, there is pity involved.
- Richard Hatch is a smashing actor and his Zarek was a really interesting character I will miss. I did so not see that Quorum massacre coming. Probably I should have, give what Zarek was up to when we first met him back in season one. Ever with the violence, and meeting a violent end. There's a good tribute to the actor here on Sci-Fi.
- What the hell was up 'previously on' having clips that *wasn't* in the last episode, SciFi? That Bill and Lee hug wasn't in the aired cut, neither was the 'I'll see you soon' (awww). Extended version or some such, I am guessing, but jeez.
- People you should never fuck with I: William Adama. How Gaeta managed to keep eyecontact with Adama as much as he did, I don't know, because that was some killer glares. Adama got authority by presence in spades. EJO really does a smashing job at Adama - the good, the bad, the ugly, the human. His attempt to conceal his grief at the served lie that Tigh had been killed just made me feel for him more, and the look on his face when he hears Laura speak is just for a moment so very beautiful, and the of course retaking his ship with himself in front.
- People you should never fuck with II: Laura Roslin. She even managed to command the respect of Cylons, have Zarek look like he wanted his mummy and literally threatened to bite people. You do not fuck with Laura Roslin and the man she loves, yo. Return of badass!Laura was welcome, though I worry how much it cost her. She looked really drained at the end, but that could be the emotional toll of it all.
- Hai, lovely Bill/Laura reunion scene of reunion. That was just plain sweet, without words and still full of emotion. It's just clear how much these two love each other and it breaks my heart a little in a good way. But babes, you both look really tired. Please be taking some rest and snuggle time together.
- Oh no Anders :( Don't kill pretty Sam, I'll be sad. And it would frak even more with Kara, who is not exactly short on issues already. (As an aisde, I saw some comments about Sam's shooting from K/L shippers that made me roll my eyes heavily. It's possible to like a ship without being a totall asshat about what might be obstacles to it, FFS.)
- Tyrol is a proper hero. Literally pulling out the FTL drive till his hands bled (and it was cool to finally look at the machinery) and being a part of saving the day and I love that he avoiding being killed because he's always been a stand-up guy, pretty much. But that crack he saw cannot be good news. Galactica might be starting to crack literally too now, and given it's an old ship, that's really not so surprising.
- Not sure why exactly this episode needed Romo, but funny to see him again. He did help stall for time for Adama, and killing with a pen is pretty hardcore. (So is donning your sunglasses after.) And he even made a heroic choice to help Kara with Sam. Lots of recurring characters popping back on of late.
- SciFi, it's totally not cool to use blind-folded Adama about to get shot by firing squad in various promos when it's essential a dream sequence of Baltar's. Hmpf.
- The Fleet must be so very confused right now. And still fairly split, though with Zarek and Gaeta's dead, that's fairly that for the mutiny. But the cause of it does not go away.
- Good show, good character stuff, though I think I liked last week's a little better. But BSG is still rocking it very much in these last episode and I have no doubt more good bad as only BSG does it is ahead.
Interview with the writer of the episode up here and Bear McCreary has updated his blog about it here. Good stuff. SciFi also has a sneak peek from next week's episode up. It's Laura and Lee and something I totally saw coming and predicted.
Meanwhile, a a severe heatwave in Australia is not exactly helping fight the fires there at the moment. Oi. Stay safe and cool, Aussies. (You can always pop by here. Nice and mellow -8.)
