BSG's Blood on the Scales
Feb. 7th, 2009 12:19 pmI've had nasty flu all week, but still gone to work, and it's rather taken all my reserves. So sorry if I've been a bit incommunicado. I got weekend and a few days off next week and shall hopefully get better.
I'll do replies to the fannish ask-anything later in the weekend.
Now, BSG.
- A reason I love BSG: Gaeta orders the deaths of two of my beloved characters, Adama and Roslin, and I still shed a tear for him. Oh, Gaeta. His scene with Baltar was the one that did it - 'I know who you are, Felix'. Good people can do terrible things, taking it one step at a time, justifying each. Do we judge people by their motivations, actions or consequences? What's the verdic for Gaeta? From me at least, there is pity involved.
- Richard Hatch is a smashing actor and his Zarek was a really interesting character I will miss. I did so not see that Quorum massacre coming. Probably I should have, give what Zarek was up to when we first met him back in season one. Ever with the violence, and meeting a violent end. There's a good tribute to the actor here on Sci-Fi.
- What the hell was up 'previously on' having clips that *wasn't* in the last episode, SciFi? That Bill and Lee hug wasn't in the aired cut, neither was the 'I'll see you soon' (awww). Extended version or some such, I am guessing, but jeez.
- People you should never fuck with I: William Adama. How Gaeta managed to keep eyecontact with Adama as much as he did, I don't know, because that was some killer glares. Adama got authority by presence in spades. EJO really does a smashing job at Adama - the good, the bad, the ugly, the human. His attempt to conceal his grief at the served lie that Tigh had been killed just made me feel for him more, and the look on his face when he hears Laura speak is just for a moment so very beautiful, and the of course retaking his ship with himself in front.
- People you should never fuck with II: Laura Roslin. She even managed to command the respect of Cylons, have Zarek look like he wanted his mummy and literally threatened to bite people. You do not fuck with Laura Roslin and the man she loves, yo. Return of badass!Laura was welcome, though I worry how much it cost her. She looked really drained at the end, but that could be the emotional toll of it all.
- Hai, lovely Bill/Laura reunion scene of reunion. That was just plain sweet, without words and still full of emotion. It's just clear how much these two love each other and it breaks my heart a little in a good way. But babes, you both look really tired. Please be taking some rest and snuggle time together.
- Oh no Anders :( Don't kill pretty Sam, I'll be sad. And it would frak even more with Kara, who is not exactly short on issues already. (As an aisde, I saw some comments about Sam's shooting from K/L shippers that made me roll my eyes heavily. It's possible to like a ship without being a totall asshat about what might be obstacles to it, FFS.)
- Tyrol is a proper hero. Literally pulling out the FTL drive till his hands bled (and it was cool to finally look at the machinery) and being a part of saving the day and I love that he avoiding being killed because he's always been a stand-up guy, pretty much. But that crack he saw cannot be good news. Galactica might be starting to crack literally too now, and given it's an old ship, that's really not so surprising.
- Not sure why exactly this episode needed Romo, but funny to see him again. He did help stall for time for Adama, and killing with a pen is pretty hardcore. (So is donning your sunglasses after.) And he even made a heroic choice to help Kara with Sam. Lots of recurring characters popping back on of late.
- SciFi, it's totally not cool to use blind-folded Adama about to get shot by firing squad in various promos when it's essential a dream sequence of Baltar's. Hmpf.
- The Fleet must be so very confused right now. And still fairly split, though with Zarek and Gaeta's dead, that's fairly that for the mutiny. But the cause of it does not go away.
- Good show, good character stuff, though I think I liked last week's a little better. But BSG is still rocking it very much in these last episode and I have no doubt more good bad as only BSG does it is ahead.
Interview with the writer of the episode up here and Bear McCreary has updated his blog about it here. Good stuff. SciFi also has a sneak peek from next week's episode up. It's Laura and Lee and something I totally saw coming and predicted.
Meanwhile, a a severe heatwave in Australia is not exactly helping fight the fires there at the moment. Oi. Stay safe and cool, Aussies. (You can always pop by here. Nice and mellow -8.)

Date: 2009-02-07 11:38 am (UTC)lol, Laura was channeling Pulp Fiction in this episode. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger, and all that, times like ten, because you have my husband and I am not happy about it at all.
This is the first ep where I've liked Romo. The pen IS mightier than the sword!
aside from the awesome A/R, my fave scene was when Bill hears Saul is dead and he's trying so desperately to keep it together so they don't see how much he actually cares. LOVE.
hope you feel better asap. *hugs*

Date: 2009-02-07 12:09 pm (UTC)What Bill and Laura will do for each other is both lovely and a little scary at times. Zarek probably thought telling Laura Bill had died would make her give up. Yeah, good thinking there. Worked out really well.
Romo can stay if he keeps those sort of things up, really. He can bring Jake.
Tigh and Adama totally is epic platonic love. And EJO totally rocked this episode with a lot of his non-dialogue moments.
Thanks, I'm stuffing myself with remedies and various icky stuff in an attempt to get better. I hate this yearly flu shit.

Date: 2009-02-07 02:54 pm (UTC)This retard forgot to preview. Or the tags didn't work for some reason, or something. Anyway, big spoiler = the return of a certain blonde in a goo bath, or something else? I don't want to be spoiled if it's something else, but I read a comment that didn't warn for spoilers, so...yeah. I'm trying this one more time, sorry for all the edits.
).
I have the feeling we aren't going to get much more A/R from here on out, considering we've been fairly pounded over the head with it thus far. I'm going to miss it, though, and if Adama and Roslin make it to the final episode (or even if they don't), I hope we get another nice moment between them before all this is over. Preferably at the/their end.
Tyrol...I love him again <3 :).
Yeah, the "previously on" thing kind of made me laugh. I was like "UM HAI NICE WORK SKIFFY, THIS IS ALL NEW TO US, AND DEFINITELY IS NOT PREVIOUS." Though I suppose it's probably actually the editors' faults, because they have to do two cuts of the eps and probably either retcon stuff or forget what's been in what.
ITA with "people you should never fuck with" I and II! Roslin's going all badass after the "news" of Bill's death was epic...and I loved how Bill totally TOOK BACK HIS MOTHERFRAKKIN' SHIP, even though we all probably called bullshit on his "no amnesty" line XD.
ETA: Why don't font colors work in your journal? O_o;
Things I want your opinion on: The new Six we saw was definitely NOT Natalie, imo. Different outfit, her personality was too cloying and sexually derived, and she wasn't very strong. Plus the hair was longer and curlier and more ~dreamy~. So in *my* opinion she was a new form of head!Six...but some people have been saying she's a new Six altogether. However, I think that would be a hairbrained move on the writers'/director's part, because now people will be thinking she's going to become all significant, and I don't really get that vibe from that scene. Who, or what, do you think she is?

Date: 2009-02-07 03:41 pm (UTC)Font codes might not work because this is a custom layout, I dunno?
I'd be surprised if we keep getting as much A/R stuff as these last episodes given how much there's left to resolve and some other stuff must get airtime as well. But I don't think there will be nothing between here and the finale. We'll see, though.
Yeah, total editor frak, and apparently, they've done this before for BSG. I am truly impressed.
Just because Bill didn't kill them all right away doesn't mean he will give amnesty to them either. There's a lot to sort out from this failed mutiny, that's for sure. Bill can be a bit of a softie, but we will see.
Eh well, I read the interview with the writer of the episode that I linked in the post, and he said she was a Six. So I'm going with a Six, and not a head one. We already know the Sixes can differ from each other quite a lot, so a slightly new edition Six would fit right in. There was a lot of Baltar material cut in this episode, apparently, which might have led to the confusion about it.

Date: 2009-02-07 03:48 pm (UTC)I just hope there isn't nothing, and I'll be pretty happy -- I think our shippers needs a breather from all the squeeing we've been doing lately xP.
I definitely hope we see more resolution, like with Narcho and Racetrack and Hot Dog, because I feel like with the exception of Narcho, their misdeeds haven't been dealt with at all...and they're also short a pilot or four, if Narcho's refusing to serve under someone who's a softie for Cylons.
OIC. I totally hadn't read that when I posted my comment (I had about a kajillion tabs from my flist open), but I get it now. It's almost like this new Six is really young, you know? She's coming from that religious/sexual background they all come from, but she's more deeply entrenched in it and naive about Baltar than the others are or have been.
I really hope they include a super!extended edition of this episode on the DVD, because from what Mo's interview said, it sounds like there was a lot of material cut from everything, and not just the baseship. It definitely made it slightly confusing, but this episode probably wouldn't have worked as the middle of a three-parter :P.

Date: 2009-02-07 06:29 pm (UTC)Yeah, there's been quite a lot in a very short time. But heck, EJO and MM don't need a very long scene to give us gold. Their reunion was less than a minute and I ate it all up.
I think we will see some resolution, or continuation of conflict, as it might be. There's six episodes left. I'm sure BSG can kick us more in the guts.
Yeah, that's a good way at looking at her. She was all 'I'm just trying to make you feel better' to him, which was a bit what Caprica Six did to Tigh too. Them Sixes.
Me too. In fact, I want extended versions of all these last episodes. It's the least they can do after making us wait so long.

And I agree - please let Sam live!

Date: 2009-02-07 06:33 pm (UTC)This episode seemed determined to make you cheer the awesomeness of half the people, and feel sorry - as in empathy, not the more negative kind - for the rest. It really did some interesting character things.

Date: 2009-02-09 05:54 am (UTC)Also, words cannot even begin to express how beautifully I think Mary McDonnell brought Laura Roslin to life this episode. Seriously - it's some of her best work on the show (to me) - and that's saying something, as I pretty much always think she's made of awesome.

Date: 2009-02-07 05:55 pm (UTC)In the meantime, I'll be here trying to resist the urge to run away to Australia and escape all of this cold we've been having. The fires are certainly unfortunate though and I hope they get those under control before too many more people are injured or lose their homes.
I hope you feel better soon. Take care of yourself and get plenty of rest.

Date: 2009-02-07 06:35 pm (UTC)The whole northern hemisphere seems to have been hit by cold-fronts. Europe's having brrr, Britain record snowfalls, we're slightly chilly even for us. And Australia is having problems in the opposite directions. What the hell with all this extreme weather - what happened to some nice, comfy average?
Fingers crossed.

i will really miss zarek. even if he was a rather periphery character, he had a lot of depth and was very interesting. if zarek had to go, this is probably the best way- zarek doing what he thought was best. the quorum guy who asked him to leave, was he from sagittarious? because that would make sense.
yeah, i agree that last week's was better, but they kept the good stuff coming and kept it interesting. they have now very much raised my expectations for the remaining episodes. they better deliver.
have a great weekend :o)

Date: 2009-02-07 09:14 pm (UTC)I've actually seen this increasingly often recently. Various shows (SciFi particularly) seem to like to use different cuts/takes or completely scrapped scenes in the 'previously' bit. I suppose it's one way to get around having to cut important things for time. But yeah - annoying.
I've heard that the Sam thing is so they can stop covering up the scar Trucco has from his car accident or some such.
