I finally figured out why the Rohan theme felt so familiar to me (they play it as you see the first grand shots of Edoras). It's using 'haringfele', the Norwegian folk music instrument. It has a distinctive sound, so I must have been picking up on that.

I've written a bit on the slash adventure, but sadly, a plotbunny bit me with the seeds of a real slash story (Legolas/Gimli, of course) and I've been scribbling some of that. Dunno if it'll go anywhere, as I'm rather fickle.

Almost Christmas! And we got snow!

Ah! I read about that in the CD booklet. Howard Shore was attempting to bring culturally relevant instruments into the music, so for the Celtic theme he brought in the Hardangerfiddla. I love the sound, too; I really want it in place of my violin, which has such a normal, mundane sound. And I want a harp, and a bodhran, and...

So many instruments, so little time.

That name looks all wrong in English. *shudders* It's a beautiful instrument, though and it's become a musical symbol of Norway - at least to our minds.

But I'm rather horrid at music - can't play any instruments and can't do scales. I envy anyone who can.

Sorry to hear it. Usually you're born with the ability to play music, or you're not. But some people get it halfway. My sister is incredibly skilled at guitar, but she can't sing a note in tune worth her life.

Brilliance comes in many forms...

Personally, I'll play any instrument I'm interested in. Music has always been a huge part of my life; hence, the reason why I listen to it almost nonstop. Still, sometimes it's nice not to have a very sensitive ear. Example: when said sister is singing at the top of her lungs, and I wish I really were deaf...

And you know, with all the snow in Canada, we have pretty big snowmen. :P

*throws a slushball* They forgot to put freaken salt on the roads and it's gonna rain tomorrow anyway...PLUS the fact I had to ride home from work in it and my supposedly first ever white christmas and birthday is now turning into a sludge fest...Am starting to realize why I hate this holiday.

*looks at her rotk tickets* and if mum doesn't come home soon...I'm going alone again. Bloody got seats right under the screen on the far side. Do I look grumpy and cynical due to being soaked through by snow and sludgewaves? Sure thing dearie.

And the whole slash thing...hun...dear me, you have caught the bug. Hehe...come, join the club of slashers...it's rather fun over here...especially since I heard Dom really is gay but is no kind of relationship with another cast member...despite what many hope. Hmm, this needs research...but my source seems sound...hmm, will check anyway.

I don't trust any of the rumour on the LotR guys. For all I know, some of them might be true, but since I cannot know (and it's not really any of my business) I'll just opt not to trust rumours.

*dodges slush ball* Tsk. No good if it ain't snow.

We've had snow in Alaska for several months. Hee. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to ski.

My mom was the one who realized that it wasn't actually a violin. Then she HAD to find out what it exactly was, and inform us in great detail. The siblings were not impressed and told her so.

And it snowed eight inches the night before last, and it's still snowing.
I have plenty of arsenal...

I was in Norway over christmas! The snow was a lovely change from "cold drizzle" England.
