I know, I know, it's like picking a scab, but I can't help myself.
So, a petition has sprung up asking for Roman Polanski's release, where his arrest is charmingly described as "a case of morals" and they show a distrurbing lack of knowledge of what a neutral country actually is. (Tip: It's about neutrality in wars, nothing to do with crime.)
People who've signed that one includes Terry Gilliam (nooooo), Salman Rushdie, Tilda Swinton, David Lynch, Woddy Allen and Whoopi Goldberg.
Whoopi Goldberg said this: “I don’t believe it was rape-rape. He went to jail and when they let him out he was like, ‘You know what, this [judge] is going to give me a hundred years in jail. I’m not staying’.” (Source.)
... Anyone else having disturbing flashbacks to fucking Bill Napoli's definition of rape? I sure am. Rape-rape? Really, Whoopi? You really want to contribute to the sort of bullshit attitudes that lead to so few sexual assaults being reported?
I'm seriously disappointed, and I was so liking Whoopi before this for her interest and promotion of BSG, too :(
This excellent article points out what this defenders of Roman Polanski are doing so horridly wrong - losing sight of the real victim. (Warning, discusses the girl's testimony and could be triggering.)
But of course, the world is ripe with attitude like the one in this comment (from this article):
"While his behavior was technically wrong, the woman in question was not an untouched virgin, nor was she a stranger to drink and drugs."
.........
YOU WHAT. Oh yeah, that she's had sex before makes it totally okay for him to rape her. Sure, having tasted alcohol before is just begging for getting forced to do drugs in any situation. Yeah, 13 is totally being a woman and not at all a child!
Excuse me while I feel sick. But that's the ghost of Bill Napoli again, isn't it? Proper rape, rape-rape as Whoopi would have it, happens only to virgins and pure women and better involve strangers because only strangers rape. Oh yeah. The rest? That's "technically wrong", but hey, the victim have had sex before and that's makes it less of a crime, doesn't it?
NO. A rape is sex without consent and it's not less of a crime by anything the victim does or how well she knew the rapist. A rape is a rape, not a rape-rape or a Bill-Napoli-rape or degrees of how bad it is by moral judgements on the victim. And really, allowing a rapist to turn it on the victim is allowing him to do further harm onto her.
You really want to help a rapist fuck over his victim more? Really?
I've said similar things before, and I say it again: No one deserves less understanding, care and fucking respect after a rape than anyone else. If you were a virgin, if you were married, if you were single on the town, if you were young, if you were old, if you were assaulted by a stranger, if you were attacked by a guy you thought you could trust - a crime was done to you. Harm was done to you.
Now, Roman Polanski has had tragedies in his life. And you know what? I don't give a shit about all that when it comes to what he did. He raped and drugged a thirteen year old girl, a kid, and then fled rather than pursue his legal options if there really was judicial misconduct.
This case is about him and what he did. Turning him into the victim and trying to imply she is less of a victim because rape is only rape-rape when it follows some absurd standard you've set? That is foul and causing further harm to the victim. Don't do it.
Rape is rape. And it's about the rapist and what he did.
Oh, and do take in Roman Polanski's own charming words about the incident, from 1979 and quoted here: “If I had killed somebody, it wouldn’t have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But… f—ing, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to f— young girls. Juries want to f— young girls. Everyone wants to f— young girls!”
Yeah. Are you feeling the sympathy for him yet?
There are also some who are speaking up against support of Roman Polanski, and I give them props: Bill Maher, Kevin Smith and Gren Gunberg at least.
I sure hope some petition to have him face justice comes about and enough sign it to make me feel better about humanity. Because right now, I'm not feeling so great about it.
