PPC mess and a little bit of news
Apr. 26th, 2004 05:18 pmWhy is it whenever I take a day off, I come back online to find some major mess has occured? This time it's the PPC board. I have to say it seems to have been brewing for a while though, so I'm not exactly shocked. Bit surprised at who is involved, but then, it's not the first time I fail to notice people don't like each other. I'm not always the best at picking up vibes (which explains why I sometimes worry if some people like me or not). Perhaps I'm not always the best at sending vibes either. *shrugs* I was raised to say what I mean or shut up, and subtle-hinting-vibes is obviously not my greatest strength. *shakes head* Bah. Sometimes people just annoy me, even if I like them. I don't much like emotional blackmail or 'wah, wah, wah, pity me, you pity me NOW!' whining (I'm not talking about genuine having a rough time and wanting some support kind. We're all entitled to feel a bit down and in need of some kind words now and then and vent a little.) It makes me more angry than anything else and I'd rather not see it on the PPC board, quite frankly. Compassion and support is something I'd rather give, not be hounded for and pushed into (insincerly) giving. Then it just loses its meaning to me and becomes polite triteness.
Aaaaanyway, before I get worked up into some great rant on that, some minor news from Norway...
Powell has made a plea for Norway to stay in Iraq, but our government have confirmed they still plan to pull out our engineering troops during the summer. I'm a horrid selfish thing, but I shall be very glad when Norway is out of it. I don't want Norway involved in things like this. War makes villains of people with the best intensions in the world sometimes...
In other news here in Norway, some utter idiot dressed himself in a moomitroll costume and laid down in the middle of the road while some of his buddies filmed it. Things went as they must, and a car hit and killed him. He was 19. Apparently, he'd been inspired by MTV's 'Jackass'. Moomitroll costume, of all things... I love the adventures of the moomitroll. Now I'm going to have the image of a moomitroll-roadkill for ages. Poor family of the boy. 19 is no age to die. No age at all... It's just so stupid, you know? We have quite a lot of traffic-related deaths as it is, but this is just doubly tragic because it's just so stupid.
On a more cheerful note, in Germany, they've released a Sims-inspired little game, only you can have the little computer people have sex and be nude too. Somehow, I'm not surprised this game from Germany.
And hey, (one of) my football team(s) is leading the Norwegian football league! Only been three rounds so far, but I'll take all the good news I can get. *waves little Tromsø banner*
Lastly, I've noticed quite a few people I don't know have either friended me or commented in my LJ. I'd love it if anyone of you would introduce yourself - if you've been lurking on my friends list for a while without saying hi, why not do it now? *offers chilled wine and chocolate*

Date: 2004-04-26 10:58 am (UTC)PS I got a book out on Norway a couple of weeks ago (a friend of my mother's lives there, too) and it showed lots of pictures of these insanely comfortable-looking beds. Kind of boxy- in niches in the wall? Do you know what I mean? Do you have one? Would you recommend one?

Date: 2004-04-27 03:49 am (UTC)Well, if you talking about the beds I think you, I had one while I lived in Tromsø and as I remember it, it was very nice and comfortable and I was sad when we moved and I got a regular bed. But I was nine then, so it's been a while. My memory of it is very good though.

And I don't get the PPC trouble either. I haven't been checking in the last few days, so I'm in about the same boat you're in. Do you have any idea what's going on at the moment?

Date: 2004-04-27 03:54 am (UTC)I have some idea of what's going on, but I have a sneaky feeling there's some big, fat backstory to who got angry with who that I am not aware of. Basically, I think tensions had been building a while, some people had a bad day and voila, a small stirring of the pot is all it takes.

Truth be told I'm very much in awe of you for OFUM, and I must congratulate you on it (I'd do so in a review, but it seems like you have enough of those).
I'm also friends with Miss V, the assisstant headmistress of OFURNK (Official Fanfiction University of Rekka No Ken).

Date: 2004-04-26 03:51 pm (UTC)The gang tossed around some ideas about keeping the fun going, though nothing was definitely decided, but a few others apparently chose to begin enforcing these "ideas" as "rules." (All shall remain nameless, as I still consider some of the parties my friends, as puzzled as I am by their behavior.) A few others protested this as premature, and the next thing I know, there was virtual foot-stamping and storming out the door and slamming it behind them of several longtime members. What the deal is, I know not. Apparently a whole bunch of boarders got out of the wrong side of bed on the same day.
I'm afraid things in the US are rather bleak. I marched in a huge women's rights rally yesterday (Sunday) and campaigned for our frontrunner candidate John Kerry. But even as favorable as things looked then, when I watch the news, te situation is grave: this country is in the throws of a massive outbreak of willful ignorance. Dubya has convinced the majority of the population that he's doing "the right thing," by getting their people killed, our people killed, and giving us the reputation of the world's big bully. All I can say to our overseas neighbors is, if you are disgusted by this country's behavior, imagine how it feels to live here and watch your own people doing it!
At the moment it's pouring down rain in the US Capital, matching the mood I'm in.
Re: Introduction?
Date: 2004-04-27 04:47 am (UTC)I saw footage from that rally - there were Norwegians particiapting as well. I cannot imagine living under a leader who thinks he's on a mission from God to do things his way (especially since I don't believe in God) - you have my deepest, deepest symapthies. It's not easy when you feel your country is going wrong (I've felt that about Norway sometimes, but luckily, my country is not big enough or powerful enough to enforce our mistakes on others) and you can do little to change it.
Here's to hoping the Shrub does not get a second term! (Although I'm not all that crazy about Kerry, but oh well.)

Date: 2004-04-26 04:48 pm (UTC)Offline I'm probably a lot more introverted and quiet (except when people talk one-on-one with me) because I hate having to fight my way into conversations or risk saying something stupid to someone I'm not very close to, but where I can write and read and have time and space to think I like to strike up conversations on random things I like when I can - which is why I was fairly quick to jump into talking about Old Norse in the English language - it makes me very happy when people respond to geeky topics like that and seem to enjoy the conversation as much as I do, as well. ^_^; I like learning things, and finding out where people come from. It's lucky for me that my mom's a rabid genealogist... though unfortunately she did find out we're related by a common ancestor on the Mayflower to two Presidents, father and son, whose last name is a synonym for "shrub." (I, however, am convinced that we were related to this Mayflower passenger and the shrubs are descended from some moldy bread he forgot to get rid of on the way to his new home that someone who *really* needed glasses mistook for his son.)
Oh, that possessed-looking kitty in my icon is Chip, who I miss very much despite his loud yowling at the top of his lungs in the hall at 4am and blaming me for bad weather that keeps him inside when he wants out. I took that pic the day I left home for Europe back in January. I love kitties and Shetland Sheepdogs who think they're kitties. ^_^
I blabber a lot when I type, too. ;P *shuts up now*

Heh, I always get excited when people genuinely show an interest in Norway - probably because it is so small and so many people out in the world have so many utterly weird ideas about what Norway is like.
*pats* There, there. I'm sure the Shrubs came from the mold on his bread in a rather freak accident involving the mold from the bread getting attached to certain parts of his body *ahem* during his husband-ly duties and you're therefore not related at all.

Hi, I'm Jeanlily. I'm a teenager, American, and a new and naive PPC Agent. I'm also slightly insane, and I burst into song at random points during the day.
As you can probably tell my my screenname, my lust object is Beregond, though I wouldn't stampede or anything (I like to think that I have slightly more control over my hormones than that), and I also like Gimli, but that didn't happen until I read OFUM. Before then, I was a Legolas and Aragorn kind of person.
I learned about OFUM, PPC and Suedom through my friend, now-PPC-partner, Agent Twain. I made the mistake of reading Suedom first, which was bad, because I didn't get it, being a complete newbie to fanfiction at the time. After I read that, I went on to PPC and OFUM (both 1 and 2), then reread Suedom, and that time it made a heck of a lot more sense. (Amazing how knowing about some things will lead you into knowledge about others, innit?)
I actually have no clue about what's going on at the PPC board, because I am a very bad little girl, and have only visited it once. *Hangs head* I spend a wee bit too much on tolkienonline.com's messageboard. (<==*coughGreatPlacecough*)
I was going to say something else, but my bloody stupid memory is, once again, playing its little tricks on me, and completely blanking.
So, if you don't mind, I'll take a little bit of that chocolate, and leave you the wine, while I go check through some of my friends' LJs.
Re: Introductions?
Date: 2004-04-28 01:55 am (UTC)OFUm made you like Gimli? Hee. I know the story has done that to others as well. It's a bit of an ideal picture of Gimli though, but I did it to counterbalance all those fics where he's written as a gitty brainless idiot. Blah.
Reading Suedom without knowing the PPC and OFUM might be a bit confusing, yeah. Metafics tend to need a knowledge of the fandom to be appreciated.
*pats* I'm sorry to hear you're a teenager, dear, but I'm sure it'll pass.:P

Date: 2004-04-30 04:02 am (UTC)Oh, I'm terribly slack at reviewing fanfic, I'm afraid. And I saw one of your fics was a Princess Bride one and I don't really read fanfic from that fandom at all. Your other one looked interesting though (Macbeath is a great play), so I might have a read if I ever get the time. I get a lot of reading requests, you see, so I have a bit of backlog to work through.
