LJ Stalker Finder
From Go-Quiz.com
Hah! I wonder if I'm stalking anyone?
Been a lovely weekend - bro came to visit and we watched the D-Day event in Normandie. It was strangely touching -as my brother phrased it: "There is nothing quite as moving as old men being moved." It was also quite nice to see the German leader and the French leader embrace. It's not that long ago Europe was divided and always ready for a war. And now we have peace. May it last.
Reagan died this weekend, but I felt no particulary sorrowover that. I was too young to notice him when he was president. But I feel pity for him - of all the ways to die, Altzeimer's must be one of the nastiest. I would not wish that upon anyone.
And if any of you are wondering why I haven't been online much of late - my laptop is having power issues. It's not getting enough power, so it drains the battery when it's on. Thus I can only use it for a little time until the battery is almost out, then recharge it (which takes forever). Obviously, it needs to be fixed. It also keeps me from writing as much - and the fact that it's summer and warm and alluring outside.
Speaking of writing - sometimes, I think writing OFUM was the silliest thing I ever did, for some of the e-mails I get about various thing OFU-related are just a pain in the ass. Requests, nags about some other OFU not being updated (as if that is my responsibility), questions I have already answered a gazillion times... Sometimes, I just get really fed up. (Of course, alot of the e-mail I get is also pleasant, but since waking up today I've had several dizzy spells and annoying e-mail does not help.) And to add to that, some just can't seem to spell - when requesting to do a fanfiction university to teach the art of good writing, for crying out loud. I mean, how hard is it to know the difference between you're/your, anyway?
When Norway invades the US, I'm sending American teenagers to GrammarBootCamp, that's for sure. And until they can form coherent sentences and know the many pleasures of King Kong Comma in his proper place, they can live on gammalost and flatbrød. Perhaps even lutefisk.
(Yes, I know. I'm evil and venegful. It feels oh so good.)
P.S Thanks to all those who offered to help on my previous entry. If I haven't e-mailed you, it means I shan't call on your help this time around. But thanks muchly for the offer. *bows*

Geez, your schools sound rather bad. I didn't always enjoy school here in Norway, but it did at least teach me stuff. Including two other languages apart from Norwegian. Don't they have a minimum requirement on what should be taught over there, or does it vary a great deal?

Date: 2004-06-10 11:31 am (UTC)Well, for one, I only went there until fourth grade, but also, this was a small Christian school with serious money issues (small being the fact that the entire school, from Pre-K to the end of Highschool was smaller than many Middle/High School classes). And I might be making it worse than it truly was... I didn't have the greatest experience there. Much prefer homeschooling... no teasing. *purses lips unhappily*
And we didn't start foreign languages until middleschool then, partially because of the money problems, and also partially because American schools don't teach languages like other countries do. (I like living in America, but I freely admit that our public [and some private schools] school system is sorely lacking.) As a result, I'm still only fluent in one language- that being English. And I speak a teeny bit of Spanish, German, Hebrew and Sindarin. Not enough in any of those other languages to speak more than a few basic sentences, though.
But... Mom just mentioned something about discussing whether we might host a Spanish exchange student... that'd help my spanish skills. :D

Date: 2004-06-10 08:13 pm (UTC)I must admit, I find homeschooling an odd idea. Just not done over here. Probably because in Norway both parents tend to work. But I gathered it worked for you, so... Whatever works, as long as you get an education.
I could always teach you some Norwegian ;)

Date: 2004-06-10 09:43 pm (UTC)I got teased because I was different. I'm going to sound like I'm bragging, but it's true- I was smarter than most of my classmates, and not good at sports. And a lot of the kids in my class were ADD/ADHD type kids... really hard to teach and learn around.
Homeschooling's really taking off around here... the group I'm a part of has just short of 200 families. Most of those families have the Mom (usually) home all day, but my Mom just works afternoons, Monday through Thursday, and Dad works full time. Homeschoolers are among the smartest kids in America... a lot of the winners of national Bees (math, geography, etc) have been homeschooled. I personally use Sonlight Curriculum, which is really cool, because I've got historical fiction books, instead of textbooks. >:) I think it's www.sonlight.org
And I'm always up for learning a little bit of a language... I knew a little Maltese, but I haven't talked to my friend from there for a while, so it's kind of forgotten...oops. Tajjeb, Tajjeb tant ahjar. Ok, I remembered. Sweet. :D "Good, good, so much the better," by the way. My friend typed that in the wrong IM box, and that's what got me started. :D
Ok, I'll shut up now and let you get back to... whatever you were doing...
PS- I know nothing of HTML or anything like that... how do I do urls? *looks pleadingly at anyone who'd be so kind as to help*

Norwegian pronounciation is rather hard to explain online, I'm afraid. I wouldn't even know where to begin. Perhaps it's best to start with just the written word.
Today's Norwegian phrase: Ugler i mosen - "owls in the moss", meaning something is suspecious, not right, "fishy" as it were.

Date: 2004-06-12 07:56 pm (UTC)And you'd be right. My Mom's a therapist *goes off to find a business card* What's her actual title again... There we go. Clinical Social Worker. Anyway.
She's of the same opinion as you- ADD/ADHD is slapped on kids who don't really have it. But I was serious when I said that my class had a lot of ADD/ADHD kids in it. *rolls eyes*
*groans* Norwegian pronunciation is hard to explain? Joy to the world. Jeanlily is doomed before she even begins.
I have enough problems when it *can* be explained... but nevermind that.
Ugler i mosen I can probably remember that... I've got a friend who's nickname is Ugluk... right. Pity I can't use it in real life...
